WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Twitter is one of the few social media platforms that hasn’t undergone any drastic facelifts in recent years – unlike Facebook’s ever changing layouts – but this has led to some recent criticism.

Some analysts and investors have claimed Twitter is not doing enough to improve the product it is delivering and to encourage user growth.

In response to this, the Twitter team promised to launch new messaging, video creation and many other new services.

TIMELINE HIGHLIGHTS

Do you ever miss out on a tweet on your timeline that is really important to you because you’ve not opened your Twitter app in a few hours?

Twitter is aware of this and is introducing a feature called Timeline Highlights. It will use algorithms to select relevant tweets, based on your previous tweet history, which may have been posted while you were away from the social network.

INSTANT TIMELINE

Instant Timeline is intended to deliver a timeline of tweets to new users. This will prevent new users having empty timelines when they sign up and removes the tension of quickly finding people to follow in order to find out how to use Twitter.

BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

Having already experimented with news notifications in the past, Twitter is planning to increase its effort with fuller breaking news and alerts.

The platform may start alerting users to trending topics on a global scale as well.

REAL-TIME VIDEO EDITING

While Vine has already been integrated into the platform, Twitter’s team announced it is working on a tool that will let users edit and share video in real-time from within the Compose Tweet function.

This would enable people to live broadcast events from around the world in a multitude of mediums, but it could also help Twitter push further into video content, as video ads could start appearing.

IMPROVED DMS

The biggest change will be the added ability to share tweets in Direct Messages, making it easier for users to go back and forth between private and public conversations.

This will be introduced as early as this week.
