sea Breeze at Lacey

Lacey Township was founded in 1871. It was named for General John Lacey who began the Bamber Iron Works during that period, bringing prosperity to the area. Lacey Township’s colorful history spans back prior to the Revolutionary war, when the area was inhabited by friendly Lenape Indians, who were instrumental in helping the first settlers from England survive in their new country. The Potter Church, which still stands in Murray Grove, was built in 1760 and the first Universalist sermon in the United States was preached in 1770 by John Murray at Potter’s Meeting House which was located in Lanoka Harbor. Much of Lacey Township’s history can be viewed at the Schoolhouse Museum on Route 9, which opens during the summer.

The township is still compromised of three specific areas: Forked River, Lanoka Harbor, and Bamber; but they no longer function as separate entities. Today most residents live east of the Garden State Parkway and the western portion of the township consists of thousands of acres of Pine Barrens.

Service and civic organizations abound in this community and include three volunteer and first aid departments.

Forked River Mountain is a centerpiece of vast wilderness and stands 184 feet above sea level. Lacey Township is known for its many well-maintained parks and four large, spring fed lakes. There is also a State Marina located on Route 9.
