This guide provides a quick glimpse of the many ways in which UWF faculty provide research expertise of importance to our region. Whether it’s conducting archeological or environmental assessments, helping entrepreneurs develop businesses plans and find capital, analyzing the economic impact of regional development, researching better ways to help children learn or designing cultural and language training for the military, UWF’s faculty know how to develop solutions to problems. Our Office of Research and Sponsored Programs finds funding, administers grants and commercializes technology. UWF is home to the Florida SBDC Network, which links federal, state and local government resources with higher education and the private sector to assist Florida’s small business community. Professional staff and certified business analysts working from the 34 offices strategically located statewide assist in all areas of management—from start up and planning to finance and taxes.
Haas Center for Business Research » haas.uwf.edu
The Haas Center specializes in data analysis for the purposes of economic forecasting, marketing research, business expansion, tourism and real estate development as well as industry and academic studies. The Haas Center collects, analyzes and distributes data for a large and diverse group of clients throughout Florida and has a satellite office at the UWF Emerald Coast Campus.

The UWF SBDC helps prospective and existing small business owners form, grow and sustain successful businesses. The center is an outreach function of UWF’s College of Business and maintains full service offices in Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. Consulting services and training are also provided at several locations throughout our region.

School of Allied Health and Life Sciences (SAHLS) » uwf.edu/sahls
The primary mission of the SAHLS is to develop and offer formal educational programs in the life and health sciences to current and future students and to be a vital source of well-trained and highly skilled graduates to the local, regional and national health care and life sciences community. SAHLS faculty and staff are actively engaged in the community. Ongoing professional medical education is just one of the areas SAHLS helps to meet the needs of our local economy.

The new four-story School of Science and Engineering Building (below) is home to the Computer Science, Math, Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. Features include a prototype robot fabrication and testing lab and a “holodeck” classroom with a 3-D virtual reality simulation. At the Research and Engineering Educational Facility (REEF) in Shalimar engineering students assist with research projects supporting the Air Force.
BEST House » uwf.edu/besthouse
The BEST House (Build, Educate, Sustain, Technology) is a project of the Building Construction Program in the Department of Engineering and Computer Technology. A collaborative effort involving building partners and business contributors who are committed to “green” construction, it will showcase innovative, green building techniques. The BEST House will be available to construction professionals and students as a demonstration of the latest windstorm mitigation strategies as well as sustainable living and building practices.

HLES is home to programs in Athletic Training; Community Health Education; Exercise Science; Hospitality, Recreation, and Resort Management (HRRM); Physical Education Teacher Education; and Sports Management. Faculty in the department are ready to help organizations maximize their economic impact through contracted research, outreach and student placement opportunities.

The Archaeology Institute investigates and helps preserve the prehistoric and historic archaeological resources—both terrestrial and underwater—of the Northwest Florida region. Experts within the institute are available to assist both businesses and governments examine suspected historic sites. A large exhibit hall open to the public is located in the Margaret Jane Smith Archaeology Institute Building.

UWF is home to the FPAN network, which is dedicated to stemming the rapid deterioration of the state’s buried and submerged past and to expanding public interest in archaeology. Across the state, regional centers help develop heritage tourism attractions and work with local governments to protect and promote cultural resources.

Consisting of 24 UWF operated historic properties, the John P. Daniels Studies District located in the heart of Historic Pensacola Village serves as the cornerstone of the UWF downtown campus and bridges public history training with the needs of the Gulf Coast community in historic preservation, institutional policy, oral history and museum studies. History faculty assist local school districts and local agencies with cultural tourism.

Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation » uwf.edu/cedb
CEDB has highly trained personnel in analytical chemistry, molecular biology, data management and analysis and environmental monitoring. The center operates water quality and molecular biology laboratories for basic and applied research needs of UWF students and faculty, local, state and federal agencies, and local business and industry. CEDB faculty provide outreach to K-12 education and serve the region and nation on a variety of advisory boards.

The Department of Environmental Studies offers education in environmental geosciences and research supporting the environmen-tally sustainable development of Northwest Florida and advances basic scientific knowledge in environmental aspects of geography, geology and hydrology. The department is a member of the Florida Hurricane Alliance, and conducts research on direct and indirect hurricane impacts.
GeoData Center » uwf.edu/gis
The GeoData Center provides GIS and mapping services to the regional community. Services include GIS design and project management, GIS training, Web-based interactive mapping, applied GIS research and a full cartographic production facility that can design and print large format maps and posters. A unique feature is LiDAR analysis and mapping including coastal impacts of storm events. Services provided by the center are well utilized by both business and government clients.

The School of Education consists of faculty dedicated to the prepara-tion and professional development of teachers at all levels and subject areas. The faculty can provide expertise in the areas of professional development and school improvement research, which can be tailored to meet the needs of individual schools or entire school districts.
Academic Technology Center (ATC) » uwf.edu/atc
ATC serves as a catalyst for the development and application of emerging technologies to facilitate effective teaching and learning in distance and mobile education environments. ATC provides leadership in the design, development and implementation of online learning and is an internationally recognized leader in a model for course and faculty development called Studio eTM. ATC also is a leader in developing and offering mobile learning courses to deployed military service members and has been recognized nationally as a military friendly institution for its innovative work. ATC is available to assist clients in promoting academic innovation.

The center serves the specific research and evaluation needs of community-based organizations in the Emerald Coast region. The CORAL Center assists faculty and student researchers in designing/conducting applied research studies, performing statistical analyses and preparing program evaluation/grant proposals.

The Institute for Community Learning (ICL) leads teachers to become the best that they can be in their classrooms every day. ICL works with teachers all over the world by offering online training, solutions and tools that help teachers improve their performance so that students maximize their learning potential. TeacherReady, the center’s premier virtual program, delivers preparation for second career teachers and provides a one-stop learning place for “soon-to-be” and new teachers through its portal —teacherready.net.

A consulting group affiliated with the UWF Department of Psychol-ogy, the center conducts interdisciplinary theory- and problem-based research aimed at improving human performance and the quality of life. It also provides consultation and technical assistance to institutions seeking guidance related to applied psychology topics including educa-tional, health and organizational issues. The center is also a provider of continuing education to psychologists and other relevant professionals in the Northwest Florida area.

UWF Statistical Consulting Services is a research and service facility providing statistical support to students, faculty and staff and the community. On-campus researchers benefit from consultations with statisticians in the critical stage of their experiments and throughout the duration of their investigations. This expertise is also available to off-campus clients who may utilize the Center’s services for a variety of business and public sector applications.

UWF Continuing Education provides opportunities to expand knowledge and skills through credit and non-credit courses, workshops, seminars and certificates as well as event planning. Continuing Education serves students from 30 states and 20 countries as well as conducting contract training with several companies and agencies in the region. Continuing Education can customize programs and courses to meet organizational and workforce needs.

UWF Pensacola » uwf.eduConsisting of a 1,600-acre main campus 10 miles north of downtown and a downtown campus that includes 24 historic buildings, UWF is deeply committed to the growth and economic success of the Pensa-cola region. UWF has three colleges—Arts and Sciences, Profes-sional Studies, and Business—offering 49 baccalaureate degrees, 25 master’s degrees, two specialist degrees and a doctorate in education. In addition, students can choose from among more than 200 fully online courses or 17 fully online degree or certificate programs. For the military and businesses with personnel on the move, a UWF online degree provides an opportunity to complete an accredited degree program without the burden of attending place-bound classes.

Science and Engineering research activity benefitting the region’s strong military connection is housed at the Research and Engineering Educational Facility (REEF) in Shalimar. Argonaut Athletics » GoArgos.comUWF, a member of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, competes in 13 intercollegiate sports. Argonaut teams have captured 50 conference championships and 10 conference all-sports trophies since 1994.
