How Do You Choose a Textbook?Wherever you teach, choosing the best textbook for your class means considering two things: your students’ purpose for studying English, and your preferred method for teaching language.

PURPOSE Why are your students studying English?

• Some students’ goals center on Academic English. They want to learn how to read and write academic texts and how to understand what they hear in the classroom and participate themselves.

• Other students want more General English. They need to read, write, listen, and speak in a wide variety of contexts – everything from work to daily life.

METHOD How do you prefer to teach language?

• Many teachers use a Skills-Based approach. They start with a set of skills that students need to acquire and then build lessons around these skills.

• Just as many teachers prefer Content-Based Instruction. They choose relevant and engaging topics and then teach the language through this context.

PURPOSE

METHOD

“ Reading Power really matches my teaching style and course outcome goals. Tests designed for use with the book assure my assessment of students is valid and reliable.”Sharon HennessyESOL Teacher Portland Community College Portland, OR

“ Its always a challenge finding authentic listening materials to use in my class-room. What I love about Consider the Issues is how it improves my students’ listening comprehension and discussion through quality, authentic listening selections. It’s amazing to be able to expose them to content from National Public Radio® and still provide the support they need in learning English.”Maria FernandezAdjunct Professor Hillsborough County, FL

“ Grammar for Writing is the closest thing to a Gen 1.5 grammar text we have ever seen. This text skillfully points out and explains the grammar and writing issues that plague our community college ESL students. Hurray!”Jean CarrollESL/Linguistics Department Fresno City College Fresno, CA

“ Focus on Writing is the best writing series I have seen in all my years of teaching. It offers the perfect amount of guidance to assist students to become independent writers and thinkers. Not only our instructors but also our students love Focus on Writing.”Paul KernGreen River Community College Auburn, WA
