We hear a lot about the bad charities that spend too much on overhead and too little on

actually helping people. But the reality is, for every bad charity, there are hundreds that are run by “really unpretentious, dedicated people” who want to help others and make a difference.

In this guide, you can learn about dozens of charities that are led by dedicated people and doing important work, all of which have met the federal charity drive’s 10 accountability standards, such as an annual audit.

For 30 years, Charitable Choices has given all types of charities – small and large, local and national – a chance to tell donors why they deserve their support.

You’ve probably never heard about many of these charities. They are often small, so they can’t reach as many people as larger charities. But their work is still critical, meeting needs others aren’t meeting, trying new approaches that others haven’t tried, helping change attitudes and policies that others couldn’t change.

On our new website (see page 11), you can learn much more about what these and many other CFC charities actually do with your donations. Each

charity answers seven questions about its work, such as: What specifically do you do? How is your work different from other charities? What have you accomplished? How can I be sure you will use my money wisely?

You’ll also find in-depth information about each charity –when it began, how much it spends on overhead, its budget size, its primary strategies. You’ll also find links to more information about each charity.

You can also learn… How to check out any charity in the country. How to decide which charities to support. How to respond to disasters or crises. And whether you should give through the federal charity drive.

If you can give through the Combined Federal Campaign, we urge you to do so. No other employees can choose to support at work such a broad range of charities. You can support charities that are doing all kinds of good work in all kinds of places – helping those down the street or those on the other side of the world.

Working with local partners in some of the world’s poorest countries, we provide tangible aid – food, medicines and medical support – to individual children plagued by cancer and other debilitating

American Kidney FundA World Without Kidney Disease

The American Kidney Fund helps one of every five dialysis patients in the U.S. – a total of 84,000 people. Many kidney patients find they can’t work full-time due to frequent dialysis treatments. At the same time they face the cost of health insurance, prescription medications and other expenses. With your help, last year we provided direct financial assistance to 84,000 people living with kidney failure. We also conduct screenings and outreach to prevent kidney disease.
