Pastor's CornerDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I know you don’t need a reminder that Christmas Vigil is only two days away. I look forward to seeing you at one of the Christmas Masses. The construction crew tried very hard to finish our church before Christmas. However, it just didn’t happen. Keep praying for the construction crew. They are working diligently toward the completion of our church renovation.

We will have Mass in the hall as well as Duffy Center at 4:00 p.m. on Christmas Vigil, December 24. I know many families like coming on Christmas Vigil at 4:00 p.m. Both of these Masses tend to be overflowing. As an alternative, consider coming to Mass at 6:00 p.m.

Let us reflect on the Holy Scripture Readings on this Fourth Sunday of Advent. In the First Reading the Prophet Isaiah told King Ahaz to, “Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky!” Ahaz refused to ask. He said, “I will not ask, I will not tempt the Lord!” What a strange answer. He answers this way because he had made an alliance with the Assyrians and believed they would protect him; so he didn’t need to call on the help of the Lord. How wrong he was. The Assyrians decimated Syria and Israel. (Isaiah 7:10-14)

In the Gospel according to Matthew, Joseph is confronted with a dilemma. His betrothed wife, Mary, was with child and he wasn’t the father. The Law of Moses required him to have his wife stoned to death. He decided to divorce her quietly. However, an angel of the Lord spoke to him in a dream, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She is to bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. … When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” (Matthew 1:18-24)

Unlike Ahaz, Joseph did what the messenger of God told him to do.

Dear, Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary, help us to always do the will of God, your Father, even when it is difficult. Help us to remember that you are Emmanuel, God is with us. You have told us, “Do not be afraid, I will always be with you.” (See Matthew 1:23 and Matthew 28:20)

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village, where he worked in

a carpentry shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher.

He never had a family or owned a home. He never set foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place he was born. He never wrote a book, or held an office. He did none of these things that usually accompany greatness.

While he was still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends deserted him. He was turned over to his enemies, and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for the only piece of property he had—his coat. When he was dead, he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave.

Twenty centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure for the human race. All the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that ever sailed, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as this one solitary life. —Dr. James Allan Francis

Baptism MinistryAids parents and godparents in the preparation for baptism of their children ages newborn through six years. Parents requesting baptism at St. Bonaventure should be registered parishioners or residents of Huntington Beach living within the parish boundaries. Info: Kim Beam at [email protected].

A few days ago, about a dozen priests in our area came to our parish for a meeting and toured the church. Father Joe led the tour and answered several questions. Many of these priests had served at St. Bonaventure at one time or another. One of them, Fr. Mike Heher from Saint Anne’s Church, offered what I considered a great compliment. He said, “If you were new to St. Bonaventure, you would never know that the church had been [turned around].” This was a compliment to all the parishioners, staff and clergy who have been involved with this project for so many years, including our architect.

I write this update after spending the last five hours in the church working with the lighting designer. Our interior lighting is going to be very nice. (My home lighting now seems so inadequate.) Hopefully you have recently been at the parish after dark and have enjoyed the new plaza area lighting at the entrance to the church. The City has determined that we have to replace some of our concrete walkways on the north side of the church. You might see this work already underway.

On the inside of the church, again as of this writing, I expect the carpeting work has been completed, as has the installation of the remaining cabinets. Most of the art glass work has also been completed. Importantly, our altar and ambo have been placed in the sanctuary. They were recently refinished to repair some damage. They needed to be in the sanctuary to support the lighting work mentioned above. The tapestry is scheduled to be installed just before Christmas.

Although the construction fencing has been removed, there is still work to be performed inside and outside the church. While you’ll no longer need to peek through the fencing, please resist the devilish temptation to cross the barricades and caution tape. This is for your safety and the safety of the workers.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, a new sign is being installed at the corner of Springdale and Heil. The new “monument sign”—donated by an anonymous parishioner—should be installed just before or after Christmas Day. Also, between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day we expect to trim several trees on our property and remove some trees—especially trees that are growing directly below electrical power poles or trees that are causing collateral damage.
