Editorial

Dear readers,

“Children should be given two things from their parents: roots and wings.” These words, which are attributed to Goethe, not only hold true for the challenging task of raising children but also for educating them at school and, in this sense, raising them into mature young adults that enter the world with a wide horizon and an open mind-set, but also with their feet on solid ground. This ground is what we are aiming for, providing all our students at SIS with a foundation of knowledge, skills and thinking but also of social competence, respect and tolerance.

With the constant growth of the SIS cosmos across the limit of continents, roots that not only ground ourselves but also connect us are fundamental. Our educational concept as the core of this cosmos is what allows us to grow organically in the fast-changing and dynamic world we encounter today. And growth does not only mean that year by year more students are studying at SIS, but also to encounter new spaces. This could be in the form of a new school building at SIS Friedrichshafen, an entire new school in Pfäffikon-Schwyz or in the form of theatre as a space for students to discover new parts in their personality (SIS Rio de Janeiro), as reported on by these three schools in this issue. Growth also starts in the little steps involved in learning to read, as SIS Ingolstadt will show in their article about literacy, or in telling a story on which SIS Zürich-Wollishofen will elaborate with the publication of their book “A Salad of Stories”. It is also the everyday little steps through which a second language is approached and made part of one’s own way of thinking that forms the basis for reaching further and connecting the dots.

At SIS, we are living not only a language but also a cultural variety that makes our schools platforms for encounters between cultures and traditions, as well as local and global minds. This variety also allows our students to grow wings strong enough to take them – fearlessly but vigilantly – wherever they aim. SIS Basel will talk about this in their account of a student’s exchange months in Brazil. At our schools we strive to seize the individual potential of every one of our students and support this through communal learning into an autonomous and broad future. And as learning is not limited to a number of school years, but is a life-long process, it gains strength from an open-minded attitude and a tolerant way of communicating and approaching others in our daily lives.

At SIS, we want to show our students how – with wings and roots – to be passionate about what they are doing and learning. And with this sixth issue we would like to give you an insight into the passion with which we are living at our schools.

Two Months in Rio de JaneiroKatrina Sturmhoefel, Student Grade 11

In 2013 I thought about participating in an exchange program. I knew that there is a SIS Swiss International School in Brazil, so I asked my parents if I could go there for a couple of months. My mom talked to our principal, Mr Wulfers, and with his help she reached out to Andrea Furgler, the principal of the Escola Suíço-Brasileira Rio de Janeiro by SIS Swiss International School (ESB). I got in touch with Natasha Goebbels-Raymundo, who had actually been an exchange student from Rio at SIS Basel.

After months of organising, Portuguese lessons, and a lot of excitement, I was put on a plane to Rio de Janeiro in early June. I was going to stay with Natasha and her family.

At school I joined grade 11. I was surprised how different yet familiar the ESB in Rio was. The main difference was that they have two buildings, one for kindergarten to grade 3 and one for grades 4 to 12. Most classes were taught in Portuguese, some in English. I first had trouble understanding my classmates. But with some private lessons and the help of my teachers and classmates I could understand most conversations in the end.

I was introduced to a typical Brazilian tradition, the Festa Junina or the Festa de Sâo Joâo, which dates back to the Portuguese colonization and celebrates the start of the harvest. Men dress up as farmers with straw hats while women wear skirts and pigtails and draw freckles on their cheeks. The graduating class of the year also performs a quadrilha, a mock wedding in the form of a dance.

Outside of school I could experience different aspects of Brazil. I had the opportunity to fly over Rio in a helicopter. It was an amazing experience, as Rio is a wonderful place. Seeing the unique scenery from above was incredible. I also visited the Christ the Redeemer statue, after hiking up Corcovado with my classmates.

Another highlight was a visit to the Maracanã stadium, where we watched a game between two rival teams from Rio and São Paulo. Of course we also went to the Sugarloaf Mountain, one of the best-known landmarks of Rio de Janeiro with fantastic views.

I would like to thank Mr Furgler, Mr Wulfers, everyone at ESB, the Goebbels-Raymundo family, and my parents for making this dream come true. I will never forget my time in Rio de Janeiro!

Sharing Our Gifts with Others:

The Language of VirtuesKathryn Götz, Primary Teacher

At SIS Swiss International School we believe that it is important to be explicit in the feedback we give to students. Our aim is to help our students think critically about how their words and actions can be used to affect positive feelings and changes in others. So far, we have focused specifically on two virtues: respectfulness and responsibility. We have also begun to implement a language of virtues into our assemblies, our classrooms and in the schoolyard, in order to acknowledge the many gifts of character in our school community.

Often it’s the simple acts that mean the most to our students and in which they feel the most pride. At a recent virtues assembly, each class compiled an impressive list of all the ways they show responsibility, including taking care of pets, catching the train on time and being honest. Similarly, when students handed out medals for qualities they admire in their classmates, it quickly became clear which virtues they most cherish:

“I give her a medal because she never loses faith in people.”

“I like the way he has good ideas and is good at writing long stories.”

“She does partner work well.”

“He is fair and takes care that no one feels alone.”

It was rewarding to see so many examples of loyalty, friendliness, creativity, and trustworthiness being recognized using the language of virtues.

We would like our students to regard virtues as inherent gifts and valuable lessons that can be shared and learned from others. Students at SIS Männedorf-Zürich are beginning to assume responsibility for their actions and respect themselves and others, not because we tell them to, but because they see value in it.

Our recent work with virtues is just the beginning of a long conversation that we hope the children will primarily lead in the coming years. Through this process, our students will take pride in their strengths and become accustomed to vocalizing their recognition and appreciation of the virtues that others in their school community have to share.

SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz

Seit einigen Jahren schon trug sich die Unternehmensleitung der SIS Swiss International School mit dem Gedanken, ihr Netzwerk bilingualer Schulen in den Bezirk Höfe am oberen Zürichsee auszudehnen, wo zahlreiche weltweit tätige Unternehmen beherbergt sind. Im Herbst 2014 kam der Stein dann ins Rollen. Der Unternehmensleitung wurde ein Projekt für einen Campus an der Eichenstrasse in Pfäffikon-Schwyz vorgestellt, der die Bedürfnisse der SIS in idealer Weise erfüllt. Das Grundstück ist grosszügig bemessen und bietet neben dem Schulhaus reichlich Platz für Aussenanlagen und Freiflächen. Im Oktober 2015 wur-den die Baubewilligungen für beide Gebäude erreicht, und am 3. Dezember 2015 erteilte der Erziehungsrat des Kantons Schwyz der SIS Pfäffikon die Privatschulbewilligung.

Während des Schuljahres 2016/17 findet der Unterricht zunächst in einem bestens ausge-statteten Modulbau an der Eichenstrasse 15 statt. Unmittelbar daneben befindet sich ein Spiel- und Pausenplatz, auf dem sich die Kinder frei bewegen können.

Auf dem benachbarten Gelände wird in dieser Zeit der Campus Eichenstrasse 5 errich-tet, der ab August 2017 eine hervorragende Lernumgebung für Kindergarten, Primar- und Sekundarstufe bieten wird. Neben 18 Klassenzimmern wird die Anlage eine Mediothek, Fachräume für Musik, bildnerisches und technisches Gestalten, ein Labor, eine Mensa, eine Turnhalle und Aussenplätze umfassen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Um-weltfreundlichkeit des Campus. Die im Minergiestandard errichtete Schulanlage wird dank Erdsonden und Photovoltaik CO2-neutral betrieben werden können. Zudem ist der Cam-pus perfekt an den öffentlichen und privaten Verkehr angebunden.

Die Leitung der SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz hat auf Anfang 2016 Michael Peter übernommen. Er hat in den vergangenen fünf Jahren die SIS Zürich-Wollishofen auf bemerkenswert hohem Niveau geleitet und wird die gewonnene Erfahrung und sein Fachwissen in den erfolgrei-chen Aufbau der SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz investieren. Mit viel Elan wird Michael Peter dafür sorgen, dass die Infrastruktur und die Unterrichtsqualität an der SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz vom ersten Tag an professionellen Standards genügen werden.

Summary

After a little more than a year of planning, SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz has been authorised by the Canton of Schwyz. The new school will open its doors on 16 August 2016. During the 2016/17 academic year, classes will be held in a modular building on Eichenstrasse 15. From August 2017, the new, modern campus on Eichenstrasse 5 will provide an ideal learning environment for preschool, primary and secondary school students. Michael Peter, former principal of SIS Zürich-Wollishofen, will head the school.

How Parents Help Build Our School Character

The character and culture of a school is something you feel when you walk into a school house. It resonates in the beliefs and relationships that influence the school atmosphere. Students, parents, teachers, administrators and support staff all directly influence the character and culture of our school, each in a special way.

At SIS Rotkreuz-Zug we have a very active and supportive Parents/Eltern Association (PEA). Each grade level has a parent representative. As a group they meet regularly with our principal, acting as a supportive and proactive voice for the wider school community.

The PEA starts off the year with a warmly received welcome brunch. This is a wonderful barbecue event where arts, crafts and games are set out for students to enjoy. Furthermore, it affords new and old families an opportunity to get together in a fun and relaxed environment.

School events would not be as successful as they are without help from the wider community. Each year the school hosts a very popular Halloween disco where the children get to dress up and enjoy a spooky time together. The PEA rustles up volunteers to help set up and run the disco, selects an up to date DJ and leads an exceptionally scary Trunk or Treat.

In November we hold our reading challenge where the PEA adds interest by organising parents and relatives to read their favourite stories to the different classes. The children love having their parents and grandparents in the school sharing their favourite books.

Recently, the PEA organised a charity drive and collected items such as clothes, bags and toys for refugees to help them enjoy the holiday season in a little more comfort and warmth. The school community was extremely generous and cars were soon filled with boxes of donations.

During the year the PEA organises bake sales for local charities, ski days and coffee mornings to build the relationships between families. They also act as class contacts for the classroom teachers.

The PEA of SIS Rotkreuz-Zug represents a special characteristic of our school. It helps build and strengthen our school culture in a positive, educational and fun way.

Methodentraining in der 3. Klasse

Um unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler zu selbstständiger Arbeit anzuleiten, beginnen wir in der Primarschule, elementare Lern- und Arbeitstechniken einzuführen und damit grund-legende kommunikative und kooperative Fähigkeiten zu trainieren. Inhaltliches und me-thodisches Lernen gehen dabei Hand in Hand. Das Methodenlernen ist die Grundlage für nachhaltiges inhaltliches Lernen und Einprägen. Methodenkenntnisse sollen daher re-gelmässig angewandt werden, damit «alltagstaugliche Routinen» (H. Klippert, F. Müller) entstehen. Sind die Methoden den Kindern geläufig, bearbeiten sie Aufgaben planvoller, konstruktiver und regelgebundener und die Lerneffizienz wird nachhaltig gesteigert. Mit den erworbenen Kompetenzen können sie individuelle Lernwege finden und Lernprozesse erfolgreich gestalten.

Das Methodentraining in der 3. Klasse erfolgte über Methodentage, bei denen das Metho-denlernen selbst Lerngegenstand war.

Im Trainingsfeld «Texte markieren» begannen die Kinder mit dem Markieren von W-Fragen, die dann mit einem Partner besprochen und in Vierergruppen auf Schlüsselwörter über-prüft wurden.

Die Erschliessung der wichtigsten Inhalte erfolgte durch die Textmarkierung im Plenum. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler entdeckten, dass sie viele gemeinsame Wörter fanden. An dieser Stelle wurde auch der Begriff des Schlüsselworts eingeführt. Im nächsten Trai-ningsfeld mussten die Kinder Schlüsselwörter direkt markieren.

Beim erneuten Lesen sollten die W-Fragen nur noch gedanklich erwogen und wichtige Wörter erst in Absprache mit dem Partner markiert werden. In Gruppen wurden dann die entsprechenden Markierungsstrategien besprochen und die wichtigsten Begriffe notiert. Nach der gemeinsamen Präsentation der Ergebnisse erklärten die Kinder im Feedback-gespräch, dass ihnen der ständige Austausch untereinander viel Sicherheit gegeben hat.

Das nachhaltige Beherrschen von Methoden kann nur durch die regelmässige Pflege der Methoden erreicht werden. Dies gelingt am besten durch ein bewusstes und gezieltes Üben der eingeführten Arbeitsmethoden im laufenden Unterricht.

Summary

Method training is a form of learning that deals with practising basic working techniques as well as the promotion of communication and team development. In order to promote independent learning, we introduce this program at the primary school level. These skills help our students to find individual learning tracks and create durable and successful learning processes. A sustainable command of method learning can only be attained through regular practice.

Werkstattunterricht

Um neuen Schwung in den Tagesablauf zu bringen, haben wir im Kindergarten den Werk-stattunterricht eingeführt.

Etwas zögerlich und doch sehr neugierig liessen sich unsere Kinder auf die neue Unter-richtsart ein. Wie soll denn das jetzt gehen? Nicht alle machen dasselbe zur gleichen Zeit – und wählen darf man auch noch! Und wozu gibt es nochmal diese Stempel? Diese kleinen Zweifel und Unsicherheiten waren allerdings nach einer Woche bereits verflogen, und es kam Routine und Freude auf.

Fleissig wurde gemalt, gezählt, verglichen, Reihen gelegt, gebastelt und gespielt. Manch-mal alleine und bei einigen Aufgaben auch zu zweit, oft ganz selbstständig und ab und zu auch mit ein wenig Hilfe.

Nach kurzer Zeit lief alles schon fast schulbuchmässig ab: Die Kinder wählten ihre Arbeit nach Lust und Laune selbstständig aus. Danach suchten sie sich jeweils einen geeigneten Platz und machten sich an die Arbeit – und dies stets wie kleine, fleissige Bienen.

Das selbstständige Erledigen von Arbeiten ist für die Kinder ein besonderer Reiz. Mit viel Spass und grossem Stolz führen sie bei den Aufgaben Selbstkontrollen durch. «Alles rich-tig! Ich hab’s geschafft!», kommt dann freudig über ihre Lippen. Danach räumen sie alles im Handumdrehen weg und markieren mit den Stempeln auf dem Werkstattpass die er-ledigte Arbeit. Diese Art der Selbstbelohnung gibt den Kindern ein gutes Gefühl, und sie können auf dem Werkstattpass ihren eigenen Fortschritt mitverfolgen.

All diese kleinen Veränderungen haben viele positive Seiten in unseren Alltag gebracht. Ich bin begeistert, mit wie viel Freunde und strahlenden Gesichtern die Kinder den Werkstatt-unterricht erledigen.

Summary

Our learning centre model has brought new energy into the daily routine of our Kindergarten. The children quickly found enormous pleasure in taking responsibility for completing tasks from different workstations on their own or in small groups. They are rewarded with stamps on completion of each activity. Independent learning, self-responsibility, an awareness of their own needs and of course, the joy and pleasure the children express, are some of the most striking effects of this teaching model.

Trendsportarten im Sportunterricht Joelle Beck und Karin Serban, Primarlehrerinnen

Dank der zentralen Lage unserer SIS Winterthur können wir von vielen verschiedenen Trendsport-Aktivitäten und Anlagen in der Umgebung profitieren. Durch diese unter-schiedlichen Angebote werden unsere Sportlektionen nicht nur abwechslungsreicher, sondern bieten auch die Möglichkeit einer gezielteren Förderung der Fähigkeiten unserer Schülerinnen und Schüler. Viele Angebote decken sich mit ihren Hobbies und ihrer Le-benswelt, während andere ihr Interesse wecken, Neues auszuprobieren.

Nebst unserer eigenen neuen Sportanlage lieben die Schülerinnen und Schüler den Skills­park, der gleich gegenüber der SIS Winterthur liegt und aus einem grossen Trampolin-Areal besteht. Die Kinder finden es grossartig, dort Sachen ausprobieren zu können, die man sonst «nirgends machen kann». Der Skillspark bietet zudem eine sichere Umgebung, in denen die Kinder ihre Körperwahrnehmung und Ausdauer verbessern können. Mit auf-bauenden Unterrichtseinheiten werden Spiele erlernt aber auch individuelle Kunststücke erarbeitet und vorgezeigt.

Auch die Kletterhalle ist bei den Kindern sehr beliebt, da viele in ihrer Freizeit gerne klet-tern. Diese können ihren Mitschülern ihr Wissen beibringen und ihnen helfen, was die Kommunikation, den Teamgeist und nicht zuletzt die Koordination fördert.

Auch unser Pausenplatz wird gerne und rege genutzt. Diverse Klettergerüste, ein Ping-Pong-Tisch, ein Fussballfeld, ein Sandkasten und ein weiterer freier Platz zum Spielen laden zum Entdecken ein. Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler toben sich da gerne aus. Für sie ist der Pausenplatz «wie ein wilder Dschungel, aber zum Glück nicht gleich gefährlich».

Dieses grosse und vielseitige Sportangebot an der SIS Winterthur und in unserer nahen Umgebung binden wir so nutzbringend wie möglich in unsere Lektionen ein. In solch pro-fessionell eingerichteten Anlagen arbeiten zu können, macht den Unterricht spannend und authentisch. Er bleibt dadurch kreativ und abwechslungsreich.

Summary

Through various surrounding sporting facilities, we can offer our students diverse sport lessons to support their personal interests and encourage them to try out new sports. This allows the students to explore new talents, broaden their knowledge and find new hobbies. Trend sports like climbing, playing in a big football area, and coordinating their own bodies on huge trampolines, are a fun way through which we support the children in their learning.

My CAS Project in the Woods Robin Peter, Student Bilingual College Grade 4

The International Baccalaureate (IB) requires participation in the so-called CAS program. CAS is an acronym, standing for Creativity, Activity and Service. Each student must execute one project in every area lasting about fifty hours – spending at least 150 hours on all three projects. Quite frankly, I had no trouble at all finding my Activity project – seek and hide Geocaches – or my Service project – work as a counselor in a church camp for children. But the Creative project had me in despair, and I almost quit the IB program.

All my previous Creativity project suggestions had been rejected for several (understandable) reasons. One night I was feeling particularly disappointed after another rejection, when my dad entered my room and reminded me of the so-called Klangpfad, the Path of Sounds, in the local forest. This path in the woods provides instruments made of scrap metal. I remember loving that path when I was a kid; unfortunately it had become very rusty and inaccessible over time. My dad suggested that I ask the artist, Jakob Alt, who originally built the path, to renovate and rebuild it with me. I was incredibly delighted when the artist agreed to support me and to act as my project’s supervisor.

Foremost, the idea was to make the path accessible again, which proved to be an awful load of exhausting work. We achieved it by installing metal stairs and freeing the path from tree trunks and plants. To be more creative in the project I designed and built my own instruments and guided the path with self-written poems. When I asked the artist how to compose the poems, he simply answered: “Just let your mind flow and the poems will come by themselves.” Despite my original doubts about that statement, I was astonished when that was exactly how I wrote them. It was enchanting to hear favourable remarks from later visitors to the path. Even the local newspaper picked it up.

In retrospect, the comments and praise the path received felt extremely fulfilling and proved to me that all the hard work had been worth my while.

Buchvernissage – Bühne frei für die JungautorenEdith Truninger, Kursleiterin Kreatives Schreiben

Das Sofa ist mit einem roten Samtstoff überzogen und auf ein kleines Podest gestellt, das Mikrofon funktioniert, der Spot der Leselampe ist gerichtet: Alles ist bereit für die Lesung, an der die sieben Teilnehmer des letztjährigen Schreibclubs das neu erschienene Buch «Geschichtensalat» der Öffentlichkeit präsentieren. Auch die ehemaligen Sechstklässler sind eigens für die Lesung nochmals ins alte Schulhaus zurückgekehrt. In einem würdigen Rahmen lesen die jungen Autoren ihre Geschichten vor. Musikalische Intermezzos und ein schmackhafter Apéro zum Schluss runden diesen unvergesslichen Abend ab.

Ein Jahr lang haben die eifrigen Poeten Ideen entwickelt, Figuren und Plots erfunden, an Formulierungen gefeilt und Synonyme gesucht. Und nicht nur das: Auch die Umschlag-gestaltung und die Titelfindung war ganz Sache der Autoren selbst gewesen. Auf das Produkt sind sie zu Recht stolz: Ein «richtiges» Buch mit 18 lesenswerten Geschichten ist entstanden, mit einem festen Einband in ein frisches Grün gepackt.

Ideen zu haben und sie weiterzuentwickeln ist eines der schönsten Dinge der Welt, aber man muss immer wieder auch Hürden überwinden und Durststrecken überstehen. Fiktion ist immer ein Wagnis und mit dem vorliegenden dritten SIS-Band «Geschichtensalat» ha-ben die vier Mädchen und drei Jungen bewiesen, dass sie den Mut aufbringen, sich von ihrer Fantasie davontragen zu lassen, aber auch die nötige Ausdauer haben, durchzuhal-ten. Und ganz zwanglos bauten sie dabei ihren Wortschatz aus und steigerten spielerisch ihre Schreibkompetenz.

Summary

The students of the SIS Writing Club have published their book Geschichtensalat, roughly translated as “A Salad of Stories”. The students spent the school year fine-tuning their writing techniques with their instructor, Edith Truninger. After compiling their polished stories into a single book, it was published and made available for purchase online. To celebrate the debut of Geschichtensalat, the students of the Writing Club invited friends and family to a special evening at the school.

The Importance of Room and SpaceStefanie Hausmann, Principal

Moving into a new school building is exciting. Tripling in size, increasing the room numbers by almost 50 % and having the privilege of a school gym is simply astounding.

Edutopia, an educational magazine, states that “From the front door and school grounds to the classroom, the aesthetics of learning spaces impact brain function and influence how students feel when they’re in school – as well as how they feel about their school.” We consider ourselves very lucky to have found such a wonderful building located in an area surrounded by educational facilities and a lot of nature. The building conveys a charm and brightness that makes teaching and learning a unique experience.

Rooms for Literacy and Maths in PreschoolIn our preschool we were able to allocate two rooms to the literacy and mathematical education of our youngest. Entering the literacy room, children as well as teachers can dive into the world of reading and writing with immediate effect. Books, numerous writing activities and alphabet games are on display and comfortable reading corners leave no doubt for this room’s purpose.

Primary School: One Language – One RoomIn primary school we were finally able to have separate rooms for English and German lessons. Displays and teaching materials in the target language help our students to better embrace the language. Students also understand that upon entering this particular room, they are expected to speak the respective language, providing for a quicker learning effect.

Subject Rooms in Secondary School In secondary school, we changed from the classroom setting to individual subject rooms. In addition, we are now the proud owners of a brand new high-tech laboratory, an art room, a music room and a gym. Having subject rooms allows teachers to set up the rooms according to the needs of each subject. The room becomes a second teacher and aids student memory by the use of relevant displays as well as subject literature and activities.

The additional space in our new school house creates a positive and stimulating atmosphere for our students and teachers. This, in turn, encourages learning. We are thrilled to be here and can’t wait for spring to come when we can use our beautiful yard and the surroundings for our hands-on lessons!

Lese- und Schreibkompetenzen im KindergartenMarie Ott, Stufenleitung Kindergarten

Zweimal pro Woche besuchen unsere Vorschulkinder die schuleigene Bibliothek im ersten Stock unseres Schulhauses. Neben dem richtigen Umgang mit Büchern lernen die Kin-der dort auch weitere Lese- und Schreibkompetenzen – natürlich stets in Englisch und in Deutsch.

Im Kindergarten liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Schulung von Gehör und Aussprache und weniger auf dem Erlernen der Schriftsprache. So vermitteln wir unseren Kindergarten-kindern spielerisch die Laute der einzelnen Buchstaben nach dem Jolly Phonics-Prinzip. Ebenso wird den Kindern die Verbindung zwischen Lauten und Buchstaben vermittelt. So suchen wir beispielsweise gemeinsam Worte, die mit bestimmten Lauten anfangen (E wie in Elefant, eckig oder Essen) und versuchen herauszuhören, welche Laute in der Mitte von Wörtern und welche am Ende zu finden sind.

Und Action!Das Jolly Phonics-Konzept vermittelt Laute in einer bestimmten Reihenfolge und gibt zu jedem Laut eine bestimmte Bewegung (Action) vor. Mit Liedern, Geschichten und Übungs-blättern kann das Konzept in der 1. Klasse zum Lesen- und Schreibenlernen weitergeführt werden. Im Kindergarten nutzen wir vor allem die Bewegungen und Lieder. Schon unsere jüngsten Kinder kennen die Bewegungen zu den jeweiligen Lauten. Diese werden dann im letzten Jahr vor der Schule vertieft geübt. Am Ende des Schuljahres beherrschen unsere Vorschulkinder sämtliche Bewegungen zu den Lauten und können die Bewegungen dem richtigen Buchstabensymbol zuordnen.

Besonders beliebt ist ein Zuordnungsspiel, bei dem verschiedene Gegenstände dem rich-tigen Anfangslaut zugeordnet werden sollen. Oft entstehen hier sehr interessante Gesprä-che und Diskussionen, in welcher Sprache die Dinge denn nun zugeordnet werden sollen. Große Freude kommt auf, wenn ein Gegenstand in Deutsch und Englisch dem gleichen Laut zugeordnet werden kann, wie beispielsweise Brot und Bread für B.

Für den Erwerb der Schriftsprache ist es besonders wichtig, dass Kinder die Buchstaben zunächst als Laute kennen. Dadurch sind sie in der Lage, einfache Worte lautmalerisch zu lesen und auch zu schreiben. Als Beispiel kann hier das Wort MAMA genommen werden. »M« als Laut ausgesprochen klingt anders als der Name des Buchstabens. Kennt ein Kind nur den Namen des Buchstabens, würde es unter Umständen »EM-A-EM-A« sagen, an-statt »M-A-M-A«.

Students in preschool have regular sessions in the school’s main library listening to stories, learning how to take care of books and acquiring literacy. Using the Jolly Phonics approach, children are taught how letters sound, how the letters blend together to form words and how words can be broken down into segments. At the early stages of literacy it is important that children first learn the letter sounds and not the letter names.

Daily 5:

A Fun Way of Learning How to Read and WriteSebastian Koch, Principal

The Daily 5 is a framework for organising literacy time in order to help students learn to work independently, and develop lifelong habits of reading and writing.

Students choose from five reading and writing tasks to work on independently while the teacher works one-on-one or with small groups. Our grade 3/4 teacher, Pamela Fowler, introduced this teaching method at the beginning of the school year and has been very impressed with the students’ learning results so far. Not only have the students improved their literacy skills, but also their independent learning was enhanced.

The choices students have include “read to self”, “work on writing”, “read to someone”, “listen to reading” and “word work”. At the beginning of an English lesson, the students choose what they would like to work on (one of the five mentioned above), and use a self check system in order for them to see what they have completed and what tasks they still need to work on. For example, students can be seen reading to each other, listening to reading by a fellow student, with a computer or an MP3 player, or independently working on writing.

Time to Practise Each SkillAs preparation for the Daily 5, each task has been modelled and students were given ample time to practise so they know what is expected of them. “It is really important to take the time to model and practise each of the skills in order to have the Daily 5 program run smoothly,” confirms Pamela Fowler. Throughout the classroom, Daily 5 posters can be found outlining what is expected of the students during each task and, if necessary, the teacher will go back and re-introduce one of the five choices again.

Develop Independent Working SkillsThe Daily 5 teaching method is beneficial for both students and teachers because it allows students to develop independent working skills as well as accountability, and less time is consumed by classroom management. It also allows time (during one-on-one work) to differentiate and make sure every student or ability level in a classroom is supported in the best way possible.

SIS Regensburg

Here at the SIS Regensburg, the school community is often engaged in a variety of projects; projects that help those in need, that encourage reflection and empathy, and that bring the school community even closer.

Students at the SIS Regensburg come from an array of countries and bring with them a colourful blend of traditions, lifestyles and habits. It allows us to learn about different faiths and beliefs, as well as values and tastes. Some of us are vegetarian and some are not. Some of us like soccer and some like basketball.

Projects on International MindednessAs enriching as our constellation can be, this also puts a lot of pressure on students to be more and more open minded every day. How do we deal with a person who does not like basketball, who does not care for cherries, or does not go to a synagogue, like you or me? In order to help students deal with these and many other conflicts, we choose to participate in projects such as “School without Racism – School with Courage” or “Together”. These projects remind us that we can be different and still equal at the same time. They teach us values such as respect, courage, reflection and international mindedness. Projects such as “Kids Help Kids”, where students prepare gift packages for less fortunate children, and charity runs to raise funds, engage our students in making a difference, in caring and facing reality from a different point of view.

Charity RunThe most powerful messages are transmitted and learned when students take ownership of the projects. Students organized our two extremely successful charity runs, with little support from teachers or the parent council. The money collected was donated to the city of Regensburg in an official ceremony, aimed at helping refugees. It sparked a closer relationship to the mayor and taught us about the needs of the refugees. It widened our horizons and opened our eyes and our minds.

That is why participating in such enterprises is almost a tradition in Regensburg, whether it be projects about deep-rooted societal problems, or smaller classroom projects that encourage reading. They are cross-levelled, multi-subjected and more than anything, they make us better citizens.

SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach

How do you define an international school? SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach is not only represented by an international student body but it also provides an international curriculum and a learning environment with local as well as international staff members. Language is an important part of international mindedness; thus we take every opportunity to highlight the importance of mother tongue instruction of our students.

Student Projects and Teacher WorkshopIn line with our recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) status and our school mission statement, SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach started several projects in harmony with our main motto “think global and act local”. The first project was a cooperative activity with our neighbouring school, the Kolping Academy. The grade 11 students from both schools organised an intercultural event where a group of refugees were invited for a social get-together at SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach, enjoying musical performances and local food. Not only did this event strengthen ties between SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach and the neighbouring Kolping Academy, but it also gave our grade 11 IB students an opportunity to reflect on their CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) projects as they eagerly embarked on their IB Diploma Programme.

This event was aptly followed by our in-house professional development day with “International Mindedness – Global Learning” as the main theme for the secondary school section. Mr Schwarzmeier and his colleague from the organization EPIZ (Entwicklungs­pädagogisches Informationszentrum) shared their expertise and conducted an all-day workshop. Many internationally minded ideas were born on that day and some of them have already been launched. A good example is the project “My World”, where every week a country is highlighted with country-specific items on display. Furthermore, the SIS parent council has agreed to a mini-hosting programme, where a student gets to spend a weekend with a family from a different culture. We now also organise coffee mornings run by the parent council as an opportunity for new parents to mingle and get to know each other.

Gardens are as distinctive and original as the children that create them. Therefore, we have developed a gardening project at SIS Brasília that has become an integral part of our weekly teaching and learning programme at all primary and kindergarten levels. Children are encouraged to delve into the wonders of the gardening world by “muddying” their hands, feet and occasionally uniforms through digging, watering, planning and planting.

Gardening has become one of the children’s favourite activities during the week, as the children love outdoor activities with the chance to escape the heat and play with some mud and water!

Teachers have found the activity provides opportunities for hands-on learning, inquiry, observation and experimentation. This project ties in perfectly with a number of our units of inquiry and has resulted in a school excursion to a gardening centre, so that children could observe stingless native Brazilian honeybees and interact with some of the other native flora and fauna of the Federal District.

The parents have also given a lot of positive feedback after seeing the children’s presentations about the growing process from seed to plant and the water cycle. Food grown in the SIS garden is given to our kitchen where the chef has greatly appreciated some extra greens to add to the menu, and children are much more enthusiastic about eating healthy food that they themselves have grown.

Overall, the SIS Brasília Gardening Project has been a very positive learning experience for all concerned. In the words of the famous British garden designer and artist, Gertrude Jekyll, “A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.”

Na Escola Suíço-Brasileira Rio de Janeiro by SIS Swiss International School (ESB), o teatro faz parte do currículo escolar obrigatório do ensino fundamental I, cujo o principal objetivo é o de colaborar para que a criança tenha a oportunidade de atuar, efetivamente, no mundo opinando, criticando e sugerindo. O teatro, também, ajuda o aluno a desenvolver alguns aspectos como a criatividade, a coordenação, a memorização e o vocabulário.

Ao inserir o teatro em suas atividades curriculares, a ESB faz com que o aluno construa um crescimento cultural que vai além da sala de aula, através do discurso espontâneo da linguagem teatral, o que o motiva e o desperta para uma aprendizagem prazerosa, além de construir o desejo de se aprender.

O teatro, também, ajuda o professor a perceber os traços da personalidade do aluno, do seu comportamento individual e em grupo e do seu desenvolvimento.

É importante utilizar o teatro como um recurso pedagógico e quando direcionado às crianças deve estar relacionado com diversas áreas: como a psicologia e a música, e não somente à disciplina de artes, pois isso colabora para que as crianças possam: se relacionar melhor com os colegas e no meio em que vivem; construir o seu conhecimento de maneira lúdica e, através da brincadeira, descobrir os seus espaços; se tornarem mais participativas e responsáveis nas atividades em sala, nos projetos e nas dinâmicas, além de formar indivíduos críticos e atuantes de sua própria realidade e cidadãos que valorizem as experiências e que saibam lidar com as diferenças.

O teatro tem um papel fundamental no currículo escolar. As turmas do 1º ao 5º ano têm como disciplina obrigatória, a Arte Dramática, ministrada nas línguas alemã, francesa e inglesa. Além disso, nas Atividades Extracurriculares, oferecemos aulas específicas de teatro nas três línguas adicionais da Escola.

Ao longo do ano letivo, as turmas curriculares do 2º ao 5º ano apresentam as peças ensaiadas na própria escola, já as turmas do 1º ano e das atividades extracurriculares fazem uma apresentação especial, ao final de cada ano letivo, em um teatro profissional.

Summary

Theatre is a very important learning tool that teaches children many different skills and communication techniques. Therefore, at ESB Rio de Janeiro, theatre plays a key role in the school curriculum. The curriculum from grade 1 to grade 5 has theatre as a compulsory subject in German, English and French. Extra-curricular activities also offer specific classes of theatre in three additional languages.
