In a large saucepan, combine the heavy cream and sugar. Place on the stove over medium heat. Place the yolks and Grand Marnier in a bowl and whisk together. Once the cream is lightly boiling, pour into the yolks, whisking the entire time so the eggs do not curdle. Strain the custard into a bowl and chill to bake at a later time, or divide into individual ramekins and bake at 325˚F in a water bath for about 30 minutes, or until jiggly like jello. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the water bath. Chill before using. Once chilled, sprinkle sugar on the surface and caramelize with a torch. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

With its many challenges and obstacles 2020 is coming to an end very quickly. I was reminded a few weeks ago about how time seems to speed by the older I get. I can remember growing up spending summers swimming and playing in the Tchefuncte river near Covington. Back then it seemed like summer and Christmas took forever to get here – well not anymore, time seems to slip away these days.

Thinking of time - I’m very grateful for the time we all have to make a difference at Smitty’s Supply. What does making a difference look like at Smitty’s? Here’s a view from my perspective:

• Keeping each other safe – reporting safety concerns • Doing the right thing all the time – no shortcuts • Serving the needs of our Customers – producing

product• Safeguarding the environment – keep the plant clean• Producing a quality product – follow our processes• Adding value - giving maximum effort while at work

As we head into 2021 we are poised to have a great new year! We have invested several million dollars in new equipment throughout the plant in 2020. We’ll see a new grease line installed in the grease plant by January 6th. We’ll have the new plastics FKI blow molding machine arrive by mid-January (coming from S. Korea). Before the end of December, you’ll see Quaker State product being produced off of line 19 in filling. These investments are not only an investment in equipment or “Smitty’s”, they are an investment in you and our community. Where else in Tangipahoa parish or Southeast La for that matter has more been invested in a single plant??

We have lots to be proud of at Smitty’s! The leadership team and I are proud of you, our Associates. Thank you for all you do to make Smitty’s great!

Merry Christmas and Happy 2021! Bryan

THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUCKING DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. This holiday season is off to a record-breaking start; from Black Friday, to Cyber Monday and beyond, sales have skyrocketed in store and online. In fact, a record-breaking $6.22 billion was reported from online sales alone this Black Friday, which is a 24 percent increase from last year. These increased sales mean big things for the U.S. economy and businesses everywhere. They also force consumers to reflect on how important truck drivers and the freight industry are during the holiday season.

1. Communities Rely on the Trucking Industry - Studies show that 80 percent of communities across the U.S. receive all of their goods by truck. Without truck drivers, packages would not arrive at people’s homes in time for Christmas or other days of celebration, office shelves and storage closets would remain empty year-round, and retail establishments would have no products to sell. 2. Truckers Help Keep Holiday Roads Safe - As more and more people start traveling for the holidays, the risk of accidents also increases. However, each year, truckers are doing their part to keep the roads as safe as possible through extensive training, innovative technology and safety communication campaigns. 3. Rise of Online Shopping and the Freight Industry - For the businesses that wish to stay afloat, fast shipping is a must. This has inspired solo truckers to pair up, so they can alternate shifts and keep the truck moving all day and night. One trucker will sleep while the other drives, usually switching every 10 hours. Fast shipping is especially important during the holidays because the percentage of online shoppers increases dramatically during this time. 4. The Demand for Truckers is Increasing - According to the American Trucking Association’s “U.S. Freight Forecast to 2024,” there will need to be a 20 percent increase in freight volumes of all kinds to keep up with demand by 2024.

Considerations for Small Gatherings of Family & Friends During the Holidays.

DEC. BIRTHDAYS and One To Grow On!

When planning how to celebrate the holidays, consider that celebrating virtually or with members of your own household who are consistently following safety measures poses the lowest risk. If you are organizing or considering attending a holiday gathering, it’s important to consider the unique risks posed by each in-person event. To determine the level of risk involved, ask these questions:

What are the current levels of COVID-19? Check the number and rate of COVID-19 cases in your community, in the community where the event is being held and in the community where guests are coming from. The greater the numbers and rates, the greater the risk of infection and spread among guests.Where is the event being held? Outdoor gatherings are safest. If weather permits, celebrate in your backyard or in a park. For indoor gatherings, opening windows and doors can ensure proper ventilation and help lower the risk. Indoor gatherings with poor ventilation pose the greatest risk. How long is the event? Longer gatherings pose a greater risk than shorter gatherings. Keep your event short. How many people will attend? The greater the number of guests, the greater the risk. Keep the guest list small and make sure there is enough room to enable guests from different households to stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) apart. It’s safest to only gather with people who live in your household. Are the guests traveling? Spending time in airports, train stations, bus stations, rest stops and gas stations can expose guests to the virus that causes COVID-19.What are the current levels of COVID-19? Gatherings with guests who don’t follow safety measures before or during the event pose a greater risk. Safety measures include avoiding close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) with others, wearing masks and washing hands. Use of alcohol can affect judgment and make it difficult to follow safety measures.

If you aren’t comfortable with the level of risk involved, consider canceling, postponing or not attending the event. If you do plan to host or attend an event, have a conversation ahead of time with those involved to set expectations for how you’ll celebrate together.

Smitty’s Supply remembers the life of Executive Board Member, Charles ‘Chuck” Brister of Amite who passed away recently. For years, Chuck ran a manufacturing business of Go Karts, known as Brister’s Thunder Karts, bringing it to national recognition where he developed Utility Vehicles known as the Chuck Wagon. Chuck has been a board member of First Guaranty Bank and Smitty’s Supply. He

also served with great honor as the 2008 Oyster King. The real fun of his life was spending time with his wife of 51 years Mary Ellen Brister, children and grandchildren and watching all of their activities. He loved boating, flying, car shows, traveling, and going out with his many friends. Smitty’s Supply will never forget the many years we’ve spent with Chuck and the memories we’ve made. He was dear to our hearts and will truly be missed. We love you Chuck!
