Texas Animal Facts • Nicknamed the living fossil, the opossum dates back to the days of the dinosaur.

• The opossum is the only living marsupial (mammal with a pouch) in North America today.

• The fox squirrel is a large tree dwelling squirrel with reddish underpants and rust or brown colored underparts. Its tail, a mixture of cinnamon and black hairs, is generally about half the length of its body.

• The fox squirrel sweats through its paws. During hot weather, it will actually leave damp tracks on a dry surface.

• An armadillo always bears an identical set of quadruplets, conceived from a single fertilized egg.

• The armadillo is the only animal, aside from humans, known to carry leprosy.

Leaders of Texas 

• There have been 47 governors in the state of Texas.

• James Pinckney Henderson was the first governor of the state of Texas. His term started on February 19, 1846. He was the first Democrat governor.

• Sam Houston became the fifth governor on December 12, 1859. Houston was a key figure in the history of Texas including a term as President of the Republic of Texas and as a senator for Texas after it joined the United States. He is listed as an Independent.

• Elisha Marshall Pease became the thirteenth governor that served two terms. During the American Civil War, Pease sided with the Union. After the war, he became a leader in the state Republican Party, and was appointed as the civilian governor of Texas in 1867.

• Miriam Amanda Wallace "Ma" Ferguson became the first female governor of Texas in 1925. She was born in Texas. Her husband, James Edward Ferguson was governor from 1915 to 1917. He was impeached, convicted, and removed from office during his second term. After her husband's impeachment and conviction, she ran as a Democrat for the office herself.

• Dorothy Ann Willis Richards was an American politician and teacher from Texas. She first came to national attention as the Texas state treasurer. Richards served as the 45 th Governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995 and was defeated for re-election in 1994. Born during the start of the Depression in rural Texas, she died in Austin from esophageal cancer at the age of 73.

• George Walker Bush is the forty-third and current President of the United States of America . He previously served as the forty-sixth Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000 and is the eldest son of former United States President George Herbert Walker Bush.

• James Richard "Rick" Perry is a Republican politician and the current Governor of Texas. He assumed office in December 2000 when George W. Bush resigned to prepare for his inauguration as President of the United States.
