Final exam, if any – public discussion of Training Report or Dissertation before a competent jury.

Final and continuous assessment regulations – Training will be monitored by a supervisor who will be part of the report jury. Competences demonstrated during training and respective report or dissertation will be evaluated by the whole jury and awarded a grade within a 0-20 scale. Minimum passing grade is 10 (ten).

Physical Framing: artwork is created to be exhibited/used in a pre-established manner by its creator – the creator may know in advance where a particular artwork is to be placed and how it’s going to be used. These realities shape the creation of an artwork.

Recognise the different artistic manifestations and their interrelationships with the buildings’ history. Recognise situations involving inappropriate heritage interventions. Be able to identify and act in on-site preservation interventions particularly in what concerns the implementation of environmental control methodologies. Produce reports on the different integrated artistic manifestations including materials, execution techniques, state of conservation and remedial solutions. �

Course contents The different art manifestations: engraved artworks integrated in architectural elements; painting and sculpture integrated in architectural elements; tiling; wall painting; decorative architectural elements (ceramic and metallic). Integrated heritage and its interrelationship with its own architectural space. History and artistic evolution. Production processes and techniques. Deterioration and alteration of materials, diagnosis, exam and record. Combination with other mobile cultural assets. Climate control of architectural spaces.

Understand the mechanism underlying alteration and alterability: factors and conditions in customary cultural heritage materials. The students are trained in the use of relevant molecular biology techniques for the identification of alteration of biological agents.

Prerequisites Basic knowledge of microbiology and chemistry

Course contents Alteration and Alterability; Influent mechanisms and weathering promoters; Biodeterioration; DNA structure and replication. Microbiologic analysis. Laboratory sessions where students practise with molecular biology techniques.

The course will enable students to acquire theoretical and practical skills concerning the management of collections in museums or in an ecclesiastic context.

Students will also be able to design and execute projects involving investigation, preservation and promotion of these collections.

Preparing conservators for the labour market is the main goal of this subject, since they can play an important role in Museums, Art Galleries, Pastoral Councils, City Halls and other institutions engaged in the preservation of cultural heritage.
