15 th July 2016 Dear Parents Staff News This morning in assembly, we said goodbye to Miss Sian Davies and Mrs M Davis. Miss Davies has been teaching Nursery since September and she has been a great asset to our team. Miss Davies is leaving us to teach in another school, good luck Miss Davies! Mrs M Davis has been with us since May this year, providing cover throughout the Junior School. We are most grateful to her and wish her all the very best in her new role within the Griffin School Trust. Flute Choirs Perform in Assembly On Monday morning, both of our Junior School Flute Choirs performed at the close of the Stepping Stones Award Ceremony. This is the first time that we have had 11 flautists in the Junior School and it was a pleasure to hear them play. The beginners’ group played a beautiful rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the more experienced group (including one of our Year 1 teachers, Mrs Lloyd-Jones) played a lively arrangement of Mango Walk. Our flute tutor, Ms Jane Groves has been working with both groups during the year and is delighted with the sounds they are making. Well done and keep playing girls! Mr Beckett

Sports Day It was another very busy and very exciting Sports Day for

the Junior School. Once again, the morning was filled with fun inter-house activities for all girls, with various netball, football, tennis, running, jumping and throwing events taking place on the field. Year 5 and 6 worked together to score as many points as possible, with Dewi picking up the most points! Year 3 and 4 then followed, performing very well in all activities with Hywel scoring more points than any other house. Hywel were equally impressive for the Infant teams, racking up the most points from Reception to Year 2. Going in to the afternoon, the scores were very close and everything was certainly still to play/run for! It was Dewi and Glyndwr who excelled on the Infant track, with Dewi earning just two more points than their blue rivals to finish on top. The overall outcome of Sports Day was arguably dictated by the outstanding performance by Hywel on the Junior track. The yellow’s racked up an impressive 117 points, 28 more than their nearest competitors to rightfully lift the trophy at the end of the day! Congratulations Hywel!! A huge thank you to all children, staff and parents for their involvement on Sports Day! Due to the overwhelming enthusiasm and demand from the mums and dads, 5 adult races was certainly a first for Howell’s Junior School!

Year 2 It was a first for Howell’s Junior School last week when a team of 12 girls from Year 2 took part in a multi-event sports competition at Western Leisure Centre in Fairwater. Here, the team of girls took part in a number of football, netball, tennis and athletics activities with plenty of enthusiasm. Despite going up against the boys, the girls finished as the #1 team in Cardiff which was a huge achievement at their very first competitive event! Well done Celeste, Lara, Alice, Katherine, Olivia, Tatjana, Francesca, Darcie, Ffion, Eloise, Chloe and Amayah! A special well done to Celeste, who picked up an individual bronze medal for her impressive keep-up skills in the tennis activity! Rounders Year 3 and 4 had their final rounders matches of the year last week as they took on Rougemont School from Newport. Two teams from each age group took part, with Year 4 winning both of their matches thanks to some fantastic batting! Year 3 followed suit, showing some great batting skills whilst winning both of their matches! It was a great end to the season for Year 3 and 4, who won all of their matches this year and have improved considerably throughout the term! Rolls Royce Some girls in year 5 and 6 were very lucky to have a visit from Rolls Royce on Wednesday. Past pupil, Hannah, gave them an outline of her exciting role as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry. They investigated a modern jet engine and learned about the 'suck-squeeze-bang-blow theory'. The girls even put together the parts of a mini model jet engine without instructions!!!! The girls loved the afternoon and certainly were given a wonderful taster to engineering as a career.

Fabulous Finish – Year 2 Last Friday, Year 2 enjoyed a truly 'fabulous finish' to their topic "Summer at the Seaside". The girls have been finding out about traditional seaside food and treats and as part of their Design Technology work, have researched Knickerbocker Glories. They have thought about different ingredients and then designed their own spectacular ice cream dessert. Last week the girls visited Café Castan in Llandaff to make their own

Page 5: A GDST School | Howells Cardiff - 15th July 2016...Year 2 It was a first for Howell’s Junior School last week when a team of 12 girls from Year 2 took part in a multi-event sports

Knickerbocker Glories, trying hard to keep to their specific design. It was a real treat having an ice cream van to ourselves and everyone certainly enjoyed building the different layers of the ice cream! Every girl loved the taste of their bespoke desserts and there were positive evaluations all round. A wonderful way to conclude

this term’s topic!

A message for all JCC members! On the Junior School page of Firefly there is a new section called Junior Music. In there, the girls will find recordings of all the vocal parts for I Bought Me a Cat and We Are the Young. It would be fantastic if you could listen and sing along during the summer! The girls have been given their own copes of I Bought Me a Cat today and there is a PowerPoint of the lyrics for We Are the Young. The sound files may take a little while to open, so be patient! We are looking forward to seeing you at the first rehearsal on September 14th. Happy singing choir! Mrs Phillips and Mr Beckett Leavers’ Assembly This morning we were traditionally entertained by Year 6 who shared their memories of the Junior School before their move in to Year 7. They entertained us with songs from their recent show ‘We Will Rock You’ which they sang beautifully. I have a special birthday during the summer holidays and, as a surprise, the girls had created a video of birthday messages. I was really touched and couldn’t believe how they had managed to record so much footage in and around the school without me noticing! Quinn Cup This year the Quinn Cup was awarded to Susanna Fraser. Congratulations Susanna! Earrings Please note earrings are not allowed to be worn at school.

Clubs At the end of the year, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the club providers who lead our extra curricular clubs in the Junior School, both the staff who work in the school and our external club providers. Together, the girls have the opportunity to develop so many wonderful skills and talents in language, music, sport, cookery and many other general life skills which we know they will have the opportunity to build upon in the future. The list for the clubs being run in the Autumn term will be emailed to parents at the start of the new term, so please do look out for it and continue to support the range of activities available.

‘Meet the Teacher’ Evening There will be a ‘Meet the Teacher’ meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 7th September (the first day of term) in your daughter’s classroom. This will give you an opportunity to find out more about what your daughter will experience in the year ahead.

Mornings In the mornings we shall continue to sign girls in as we have done during the past two weeks. Uniform In September, girls have the choice to return in summer or winter uniform depending on the weather.

It’s time to give your recorder a holiday bath! We are sending the girls’ recorders home over the holidays and are politely requesting that they be given a clean out! The simplest way is to take the instrument apart and let it soak in a bowl of warm soapy water for an hour or so. Then rinse the parts through and have a look inside - there should not be anything visible! Finally, reassemble the instrument. Many thanks for doing this. The girls will now start the new school year with a clean instrument which might also produce a better sound! Mr Beckett
