Hiroko Mizuki*, Junya Matsumoto**, Satoko Mitani***, Keijiro Yamada**** Recently, the utilization of public spaces such as riverfront spaces, road spaces, and parks has been popular. In this study, we aim to clarify the relationship between the qualitative evaluation of public spaces and personality using the Big Five personality measurement. The result shows that the subject group that was high in ‘extraversion’ and ‘conscientiousness’ highly evaluates the openness of public spaces from the viewpoint of their qualitative aspects as well as their physical features. We call this personality as “coexisting self-direction”. Consequently we point out the importance of developing and improving public spaces in urban planning so as to cultivate this personality.
