History of Operation Christmas Child The mission of Operation Christmas Child is “to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.” http://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/frequently-asked-questions/ “The concept of Operation Christmas Child began on 10 October 1990, when Dave and Jill Cooke of Wrexham, Wales were watching a broadcast on Romanian orphanages. They asked the question: How can we help the real victims, the children, who live in these situations day after day? They knew they could not stop the wars, but they could offer something – the gift of love. Together, they filled a convoy of nine trucks with medical supplies, food, clothing and Christmas gifts for children, and headed into Romania, which had recently been devastated by war. Dave Cooke spoke with Franklin Graham in the summer telling him of what he had done and asking for filled shoeboxes to take with him on an upcoming trip to Bosnia. Days before Thanksgiving, Franklin received a phone call from Dave asking if the boxes were ready. Oh no. Franklin had forgotten about his promise, but it wasn’t too late. He told Dave that he was working on it and immediately called Ross Rhoads, senior pastor of Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. As always, Ross was glad to help and said, “Tell me what to do.” Franklin told him to get a shoebox and fill it full of toys, a toothbrush, a hairbrush, socks, etc. and tell his church about it. Franklin also asked Sean Campbell, the Samaritan Purse executive director in Canada to see what kind of response you can get from a church up there.”
History of Operation Christmas Child cont… During the first OCC collection, 28,000 boxes were collecting in just two weeks! Those boxes were collected in the United States and Canada.
