Details / type of arrangements made.
The Union Territory, Chandigarh has a limited area under
agriculture. The agricultural land being gradually acquired for the
expansion of Chandigarh City and the cultivated area shrunk from
5441 hectares in 1966 to 800 hectares (approx.). The main sources of
irrigation are deep-bore tube-wells installed by the Chandigarh
Administration and shallow tube-wells installed by the individual
farmers.
Due to change of occupation by farmers from farming to the
dairying because of fast acquisition of agricultural land, the area /
land holdings with the farmers have decreased. The major
occupation of farmers has taken a shift to dairying because there is a
good market for milk in Chandigarh City. Accordingly, the fodder has
become the main crop to cater to the needs of milch cattle. Due to
the diversification of occupation from growing food grain to fodder,
the production of food grains and others is hardly sufficient for the
domestic needs of rural people.
In view of above, the agricultural activities in the rural area
have been minimized. However, the seeds of fodder / wheat are being
distributed to the farmers after procurement from the National Seed
Corporation, Chandigarh, well before start of season.
