Past Recipients of the Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award

Every day, people of all ages benefit from the life-changing services provided by Western Carolina Community Action, a Hendersonville-based private nonprofit that, with a culture of respect, works to assist low-income and underserved individuals achieve their potential, live in dignity and have the opportunity to grow and contribute to a brighter future. To help ensure it can fulfill its mission and do good work for years to come, WCCA established the WCCA Fund, an organizational endowment at the Community Foundation. Through organizational endowment funds, nonprofits like WCCA gain a stream of charitable funding for their organizations that continues forever. Anyone can donate to any fund at the Community Foundation, including to organizational endowments. By giving to organizational endowment funds at CFHC, supporters of nonprofits help organizations’ plans for perpetuity. The work of WCCA is far-reaching, impacting the youngest and oldest members of our community. As part of its plan for the future, WCCA’s organizational endowment at the Community Foundation will help the nonprofit continue to deliver enriching services to many people in our region, from infants to elders and for generations to come.

Perry N. Rudnick had a deep love for natural places and for making a difference in the world. He cared about improving people’s lives in other ways, too, and to carry out his far-reaching charitable vision, Perry established a private foundation so that causes close to his heart could still receive contributions from him even after his death. Perry died in 2000, and four years later his private foundation became the Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation. Since becoming an endowed donor-advised fund at CFHC, the fund has given more than $3 million to organizations that support arts and culture, environmental conservation, education, health, human services, and youth. One of those gifts was a grant for $45,000 to the Flat Rock Park and Recreation Foundation to help complete the Community Room at The Park at Flat Rock. Just as The Park is benefiting people of all ages today and tomorrow, the philanthropic dreams of the late Perry Rudnick live on in perpetuity and will be carried out forever through the Community Foundation’s Rudnick Fund.

Every year, Community Foundation of Henderson County honors an outstanding local philanthropist with the Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award.

The Compassionate Force of 2015 Sauer Award Winner Ruth Birge

Remembering and Honoring a Brother’s Persevering Spirit

A Charitable Legacy Carried Out Forever Through Endowment

Named for the Sauers, the award exemplifies the generosity of a husband-and-wife team who supported many local charities during their lifetimes and then left the first $1 million unrestricted gift to the Community Foundation through their will. Through their endowment and other unrestricted gifts, the Sauers’ legacy continues to support numerous charitable causes throughout Henderson County.

2015 Sauer Award recipient Ruth Birge personifies the spirit of selfless giving and an unwavering dedication to making a difference in our community – all of which she does with boundless humor and a great love for mankind.

Since moving to Hendersonville in October 2002, Ruth has volunteered locally with more than 15 organizations. She has been and continues to be a great mentor to all and has reached out to almost every community group and business to strengthen relationships, advocate for partnerships and find ways to collaboratively address issues. Ruth exemplifies hard work, tireless determination, wisdom and integrity. With her down-to-earth nature, Ruth inspires through her actions, words, smile and often a hug, and she consistently pours out positive energy that makes us all want to be the best we can be and be forever caring and forever giving in our community.

Gregory Stephen Wright was a fan of musician Eric Clapton and especially loved his version of the song “Crossroads.” Greg personally knew a lot about facing crossroads in life. At the age of 15, he fell out of a tree and was paralyzed from the waist down. After he returned home from rehabilitation, Greg faced a crossroads and a choice of whether or not he should stay at home and let his condition rule his life. He went on to attend and then graduate from Hendersonville High School in 1979 with the help of friends who carried him and his wheelchair up and down the stairs at the school. After working in Raleigh and Irvine, Calif., Greg returned home to Hendersonville in 2010. In August 2014, Greg died at the age of 53. His brother, Jerald Wright, worked with the Community Foundation to establish the Gregory Stephen Wright The "Crossroads" Scholarship Fund to help his brother’s memory and perseverance through obstacles live on in a way that would benefit others forever.

Our time in this world does not last, but through the beauty and power of endowment, our desire to make a difference through our charitable giving can live on forever. William “Bill” Charles Hartranft cared about making sure that causes important to him would be addressed beyond his own lifetime. In April 2002, Bill worked with the Community Foundation and set up an endowed fund with the plan that, upon his death, gifts from his estate would be put into that fund to then generate contributions forever for specific charitable interests dear to him. After his death in September 2014 and through his bequest, the William C. and Jeanne M. Hartranft Fund at the Community Foundation became endowed. Bill’s awe-inspiring gift of more than $3.6 million to that fund will result in remarkable impacts for generations to come. Bill cared about animal welfare and our environment, and the Community Foundation will forever fulfill his desire that charitable gifts generated through the William C. and Jeanne M. Hartranft Fund will help those causes.
