I also use a variety of small stiff white bristle scruffy brushesand old worn flat shaders for stippling backgrounds and bushes.Among these brushes, I frequently use Loew-Cornell NaturalHair Bristle Brushes and Series 5254 Flat Chinese Bristle No. 4and14. You may also use these scruffy brushes “in a pinch” fordry brushing if you do not have access to crescent brushes.

BasecoatApply basecoats using several thin layers of paint until surfaceis opaque. Be sure to allow adequate drying time betweencoats.

UndercoatOn occasion I will use an undercoat below my actually basecoatwhen working on darker backgrounds or when using a fairlytranslucent colour. This simply cuts down on the number ofcoats required to basecoat an area to make it opaque.I have found this simple little step to save both time and paint!

FloatingFloating is used for shading and highlighting using a flat shaderor wash brush. Always use the largest brush possible whenfloating an area. Dip a flat brush in water and blot lightly onpaper towel to take the shine off your brush. Dip the corner ofyour brush in paint and lightly work the colour through yourbrush by stroking back and forth in a small line on your palette.Colour should graduate from dark to clear in your brush.Several light floats are better than one harsh one. Tap theedges of your floats if necessary with a mop brush to avoidharsh lines. I now also add Delta Ceramcoat Color Float WaterConditioner to my water which makes floating so much fasterand easier.

Dry brushingDry brushing is used in two different manners for the projectsin this book. The first way is to add a chalky subtle highlight toan area. I recently discovered Loew-Cornell’s new crescentbrushes and they do a wonderful job when it comes to drybrushing areas. For this technique, dip a completely dry wornscruffy brush into paint and wipe on paper towel until barelyany paint remains. Scrub the background or area to behighlighted lightly. (In a pinch, you may also use a stiff whitebristle or an old flat shader to dry brush.)

The second dry brush method I use gives a wood grainedappearance and is referred to as a heavy dry brush. This isusually applied over a darker basecoat. Dip a white stiff bristlescruffy brush into paint and pounce lightly on palette to workpaint into brush. Use relaxed sweeping strokes, varying theamount of pressure and paint in your brush, blending strokes asyou paint.

SplatteringLoew-Cornell makes a handy tool call a Speckling Brush whichI used for this book. Simply dip the brush into slightly thinnedpaint, holding the brush at least 12 inches above your projectand a turn the little metal pin. This flicks the bristles for youand keeps your fingers free of paint and also gives you a littlemore control than flicking an old toothbrush with your thumb.

WashOn your palette, thin paint with water to an inky consistency.Evenly wash over an area being sure to keep washes light andtransparent. (You can always repeat a wash to darken an area, but you can’t lighten one if your wash is too heavy) Whenrepeating a second wash, always ensure the first is completelydry.

Line workThe majority of line work in this book is painted with fine linerbrushes. To achieve a smoother line it is helpful if you slightlythin paint first. I have also used a fine permanent marking pento add details such as lines and dashes to some projects as well.If you have difficulty outlining details with a liner, you may insome cases, outline with a permanent pen and achieve the sameresults. I highly recommend testing any permanent pen on ascrap surface first before varnishing to ensure it is colour-fast.

Double loadingDip each side of your brush into two different colors. Strokebrush back and forth on your palette to blend the two colors atthe center of your brush.

Stippling or PouncingDip a dry small scruffy brush into paint and dab a few times onyour palette to remove excess paint. Pounce in an up and downmotion over the area you want to stipple.

GlazingThe glazing techniques used for the projects in this book arevery simple. Paint is mixed with Delta Ceramcoat Clear FauxFinish Glaze Base at a specific ratio and is either dabbed onwith crinkled plastic wrap or brushed over a basecoat colour.Glazing medium extends dry time and allows you to adjust thetranslucency of a colour by adding more or less glaze.

General Terms and Preparation Instructions

DotsFor perfect dots on snowflakes and berries, use the end of yourstylus. Dip into paint after each dot if you want them all thesame size. Clean your stylus often on paper towel as you paint.

Preparing Raw WoodIn most cases, I prefer to work on raw unsealed wood for rusticprojects and when using the chipped paint technique. I also donot over sand these projects before painting as imperfectionsand the natural wood grain add to the overall aged effect in thebackground. If you wish to paint these designs on smoothsurfaces it is still very easy to achieve an aged look. Simplyapply your basecoats thicker than you normally would and donot sand between coats. This may be the one and only timeyou have heard a “thick basecoat and a few brush lines in abasecoat” is a good thing! You may prefer, to fill holes withwood filler. If so, allow to dry and sand lightly. Be sure toremove any dust with a tack cloth. I also frequently use a softdamp cloth to remove dust from any projects with a darkerbasecoat before I paint the design.

Sealing Wood (Optional)For projects which require a smoother painting surface, Iprefer to seal wood first before base coating. Fill any holes ordents with wood filler. Allow to dry and sand until smooth.Remove dust and seal with one coat of Delta Ceramcoat All-Purpose Sealer following manufacture’s instructions. Onceagain, sand until smooth and remove dust. As I final step, I rubthe surface with a piece of brown bag paper to achieve a nicesmooth surface for base coating.

Preparing MetalEnsure surface is clean and rust free. Apply one coat of DeltaCeramcoat Metal Primer to surface following manufacture’sinstructions. Allow to dry and cure completely before basecoating.

Transferring PatternTrace the pattern onto tracing paper and center on yoursurface. Transfer all main pattern lines using the appropriatecolour transfer paper and a fine point stylus. (Use whitetransfer paper for dark surfaces and dark transfer paper forlighter ones.) Ensure you press lightly when transferring toavoid indentations and dark lines. Details from pattern may betransferred as needed after basecoat and/or shading andhighlighting is complete.

I do also have a little tip to share about “cheating” when itcomes to transferring details. Frequently I will trace a tinysection (for example the face on a moon or windows and doorson a saltbox house.) onto a clear acetate sheet using apermanent marking pen and then transfer from that ratherthan trying to line up an entire pattern. (Inexpensive reportcovers work wonderfully!) Be sure to use a kneaded eraser toremove any transfer lines before varnishing.

Chipped Paint TechniqueWell this certainly is not a new technique that I use in thisbook to age painted surfaces. In fact, the technique I use wasone I came across quite by accident after searching high andlow for clear shoe polish to do another project. I didn’t haveany shoe polish in the house at the moment, but I did have alip chap stick handy and was thrilled with the results andcontrol it gave me. For this technique the surface is base coatedand lip chap is applied to act as a resist to keep a second topcoat of paint from sticking. Once dry, the surface is sanded andareas of the first basecoat are exposed giving you a chippedpaint appearance. A palm sander is helpful, not necessary toachieve this effect. As an added note, be aware lip chap doesquickly “clog up” sandpaper. This is why I tend to sand verylightly using scraps of medium grit sandpaper first on lip chapareas. I then continue to sand the entire area with fine gritsandpaper until bits of the first basecoat begin to peek through.

FinishingI usually finish all of my projects with Delta Ceramcoat MatteExterior/Interior Varnish because I like its dull matte finish onmy projects. You may spray varnish or use a satin finish if youprefer a slightly brighter look to your piece. I also keep aseparate large flat brush just specifically for varnishing to avoidgetting dry paint flecks in my finish. Just be sure to allow yourproject to dry completely between coats.
