Kids Against Hunger Kick off

Kids Against Hunger is people helping people. Teams of people donate their time, energy and finances to help measure and bag this life-saving food. Volunteers work by helping fill bags with our specially formulated rice-soy casserole proven to meet all nutritional requirements of severely malnourished persons for physical growth and mental development.

This is a food package that has been developed by food scientists at Cargill, Pillsbury, Quaker Oats, General Mills and ADM. This one package provides six nutritionally-complete servings to feed starving children around the world as well as the hungry here in the U.S.A., for the low cost of 25 cents per serving. We will learn about KAH in our classrooms. Watch for flyers sent home to further inform families on several Thursdays

and in classroom newsletters and blogs. All Jackson Elementary classes will be volunteers for Kids Against Hunger on May 27th. We need to raise 6000 dollars –that amount ensures each student will get about 20 minutes of packing time when the stations arrive at Jackson.

Please help us reach our goal by supporting the K A H Hope for the Hungry events (weekly incentives), donating 15 dollars or more through checks made out to Kids Against Hunger, and by saving lots of quarters and sending them into school starting April 11 ( Each nutritional package contains six portions at only 25 cents per serving which is why we collect quarters). We are excited to be a part of a world-wide effort to significantly reduce the number of starving people. Together we can be Kids Against Hunger! Note: You are encouraged to donate at least 50 cents a week starting next week or more if your family is able to do so. Checks make it easy to keep track of your donations. Many companies will match your donation, as well. The Iowa organization runs at 100% donated to the meal program. Kids Against Hunger is a 501(c)(3) organization and is approved by the IRS for tax deductible donations.  www.kidsagainsthungeria.com for more information.

Jackson Walking School BusWOW - Walk on Wednesdays

Jackson is continuing the Walking School Bus program on Wednesday mornings this Spring. We currently are running route 1 only, as we are still in need of two adult volunteers to run route 2. If you are interested in helping with route 2, or starting another route, contact the coordinator listed at bottom of this sheet.

A walking school bus is a designated group of children, walking to school on a specific route, under the supervision of at least two adults. The adults may be parents, teachers, or community volunteers. There is no cost to participate in this program. On Wednesdays, your child may join the walking school bus, to school, at one of the designated bus stops and will arrive at school about 8:45 AM.

If you registered your child(ren) last fall, they do not need to register again for this year. This program requires a parent’s permission for their child to participate, by completing this registration form. Please review the list of program polices with your child, which include behavioral expectations. In addition, it will be the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child arrives at their Stop on time. You will receive an email confirmation verifying their registration and reminder emails prior to the walks. Why walk? WOW, lots of benefits:

Children are more alert during the school day.Engage in physical activity, resulting in better physical health.Develop a sense of neighborhood and community.Build stronger social skills.Reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality around Jackson.

Don’t live near a route? Drive your child to a stop and and meet the bus for the rest of the way to school. Have questions or want to volunteer with this program? Contact the coordinator:

Julie McMahan 319-654-0532 [email protected]
