This year, we turn five – in a way, the first major landmark in a festival’s life. When we founded Indian Summer Festival in 2011, we wanted it to be a place that would allow us to question and understand the world we live in, and imagine how it could be if we shaped it together.

We feel a measure of pride that over the past four years the festival is where Vancouverites have journeyed together through incredibly diverse opinions, perspectives and artistic creations. From Booker Prize-winning novelists to DJs, from classical musicians to political commentators, Indian Summer Festival has become the place where worlds meet.

Our fifth edition is our most omnivorous yet. This year we present a Nobel Prize-winning scientist in collaboration with a jazz quintet, bridging the worlds of art and science. Then one of India’s most brilliant journalists collaborates with a DJ to take us back to the heady world of Bombay’s jazz age. We see the beauty of legacies when one of India’s most venerated maestros, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, takes to the stage with his sons, seventh-generation musicians Amaan and Ayaan. A slew of eclectic, world-altering writers and social entrepreneurs open our minds to issues as diverse as national traumas, social taboos, ISIS and the art of taxi driving. A series of free public art projects provoke both smiles and conversation around issues of migration.

In other words, Indian Summer is a festival as diverse as our audience. As we celebrate our fifth, our thanks go out to you, for we have made this together. We look forward to the many more years of creation ahead.

Welcome from the Artistic DirectorSirish Rao

Simon Fraser University is delighted to be partnering once again with the Indian Summer Arts Society to present the fifth annual Indian Summer Festival. This collaborative initiative featuring international, national and local organizations and talent is a wonderful fit with SFU’s strengths in arts, culture and ideas, and reflects our commitment to be Canada’s most community-engaged research university.

SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts will be the cultural hub for this week’s exciting events featuring music, dance, literature, visual arts, cuisine, and above all, conversation. We are honoured to be celebrating the rich cultural heritage shared by South Asia and Canada by hosting some of the finest talent from around the world.

We are especially thrilled to be the festival’s Premier Partner during the lead-up to SFU’s 50th Anniversary on September 9th. This is the first of several 50th Anniversary events and initiatives to be held throughout the year ahead to mark this milestone, and we look forward to connecting with friends old and new during the festival and in the months to come.

Congratulations to the production team who has worked so hard to organize and deliver this year’s festival. Thanks also to the sponsors, funders, patrons and partners whose support has made the festival possible.

And a warm SFU welcome to everyone who attends!

“It is indeed a great blessing to share screen space with a veteran like Anupam, and I am just blown away by his attitude and down to earth nature. You can’t get over his charm.” – M I A G E O R G E ( A C T R E S S ) , T I M E S O F I N D I A

From the lovable, comic father in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge; to the ruthless villain and cold businessman in Karma and Rang De Basanti; to the stern father grappling with generational and cultural challenges in Bend It Like Beckham, legendary actor Anupam Kher has played more roles than almost any other actor. It is this malleability that allows Kher to be equally at home working with Yash Chopra and Karan Johar, as he is with Ang Lee and Woody Allen.

Kher is often the one asking the questions on stage. His hit talk show Kuchh Bhi Ho Sakta Hai (Anything Can Happen) has seen him interview a range of stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Om Puri and Vidya Balan. At this special Indian Summer Festival curtain raiser event, Kher sits in the interviewee’s chair and chats candidly about life in Bollywood and his forays into international cinema with curator and former entertainment TV host, Naveen Girn. Kher offers thoughts about celebrity, the masks that actors wear, and the clash of generations and cultures within that most intimate of units, the family.

How do you go on when tragedy strikes? How do you heal wounds the size of a nation? Canadian authors Padma Viswanathan and Jaspreet Singh explore memory, collective silences and personal trauma in this special event co-presented with the Banff Centre. Padma Viswanathan’s Giller Prize-nominated novel The Ever After of Ashwin Rao is set among the families who lost loved ones in the 1985 Air India bombing. In Helium, Jaspreet Singh explores how one man confronts the guilt and responsibility for the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, one of modern India’s most shocking moments.

Listen to these two gifted writers in conversation with Devyani Saltzman, Director of Literary Arts at the Banff Centre.

“A taxi is a chamber for intimacies, lies, tensions.” – R A W I H A G E

Taxi drivers don’t decide who steps into their cars. In a working day, they see a larger cross section of humanity than most – drunk teenagers, twitchy businessmen and fighting couples. Some cab drivers see enough colourful characters over the course of their working lives that their conversations offer enough material to fill a book. And in some cases, they write those books.

With In the Driver’s Seat, Indian Summer Festival invites you to meet a group of artists who are linked by the fact that they once drove or still drive taxis. Whereas the interaction between driver and passenger usually happens through a reflection in a sliver of glass, this is a chance to get to know the lives and work of a group of keenly observant and gifted storytellers.

“Imagine a violin virtuoso like Itzhak Perlman also being a direct descendant of Stradivarius, and you can come close to the stature of Indian sarod master Amjad Ali Khan.” – T H E I N Q U I R E R

One of India’s greatest living musicians, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is the unrivaled master of the sarod, a lute-like instrument with nineteen fretless strings. In Khan’s hands, the sarod produces a rich palette of overtones mimicking the expressive range of the human voice, from slow, delicate meditations to furious improvisations. When accompanied by his two sons, Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, together they create a 57-string three-man symphony orchestra. This rare Vancouver performance sees Khan and his two sons in a special collaboration with local musicians for an unforgettable night.

The majority of men turn squeamish at the mention of a woman’s period. And then there’s Arunachalam Muruganantham, who made it his business. In an effort to help his wife, he developed a set of machines capable of producing sterile sanitary pads at a tenth of the cost of what was previously available. Instead of selling his idea to a company, he supplies his low-cost machines to rural communities in India. Named on Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people list, Muruganantham will speak about the opportunity he saw, the barricades he removed, and the guts it required to make the change he did.

“Jessica Jackley didn’t wait for permission to change the world – she just did it. It turns out that you can too.” —S E T H G O D I N

What business lessons can be learned from goat herders, farmers, and fisherfolk? Jessica Jackley, co-founder of the revolutionary micro-lending site Kiva, believes that many of the most inspiring entrepreneurs in the world are not focused on high-tech ventures or making a lot of money; instead, they wake up every day and build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Jackley presents powerful new business lessons, reframing best practices in atypical, thought-provoking ways. She points to how creative entrepreneurs change the world through emerging technologies.

This talk will be the Vancouver launch of Jackley’s new book, Clay Water Brick. Book signing to follow. *Double Bill with Menstrual Man.

“Reza Aslan versus your average cable news host is a mismatch. Don’t go there, producers...” – E R I K W E M P L E , W A S H I N G T O N P O S T

Apart from being an intelligent writer, religious scholar Reza Aslan is quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the most patient men on television. More than once, he has painstakingly explained to TV hosts that their less-than-sophisticated stands on Islam may be founded on flimsy and dangerous assumptions. After a sold out event at last year’s festival, Aslan returns to Vancouver to unpack arguments around religion and violence, touching on a range of topics from identity to ISIS.

Genes & JazzDr. Harold Varmus & the Jacob Varmus Quintet

“This rare disciplinary cross-pollination performance art pairs a Nobel laureate’s considerable medical expertise with his son’s original jazz pieces.” – P B S

Genes & Jazz is what happens when you cross a Nobel Prize-winning geneticist with one of New York’s most sought after jazz quintets. Part jazz concert, part illustrated talk by one of the world’s finest scientific minds, Genes & Jazz is where the seemingly dichotomous worlds of science and the arts meet. Dr. Harold Varmus won the Nobel Prize in 1989 for his work on the proto-oncogene, which enhanced our understanding of cancer. His son, jazz trumpeter Jacob, is the leader of the Jacob Varmus Quintet. Together they explore the ways that genes and notes affect complex organisms and compelling music.

5x15 is a speakers series that originated in London (now also in Milan and New York), with five stellar speakers speaking for fifteen minutes each on any topic they are passionate about. The only rules: the talks should be unscripted and fifteen minutes long.

ISF2015 hosts a special Vancouver edition, with speakers such as award-winning Indian journalist Naresh Fernandes on the global media landscape in Things They Aren’t a-Changin’. Restaurateur Meeru Dhalwala (co-owner of Vij’s) outlines the sustainable, health-friendly protein of the future in The Edible Insect, and architect Patrick Stewart of the Nisga’a First Nation speaks about aboriginal culture, colonialism and his punctuation-free 52,000 word PhD thesis in Grammatical Resistance.

Taj Mahal Foxtrot: Bombay’s Jazz Age & ISF2015 Closing PartyNaresh Fernandes & DJ Anjali

“Taj Mahal Foxtrot...moves with the rhythm of its subject, pushing boundaries, making breathless associations and swinging like the hottest band in town.” – D A V E S T E L F O X I N T H E N A T I O N A L

In 1935, musician Leon Abbey brought the first Black jazz band to Bombay, leaving a legacy that would last three decades. Swing would find its way to the streets of India as it influenced Hindi film music – the very soundtrack of Indian life. Naresh Fernandes unearths this story through the lives of a menagerie of geniuses and eccentrics, both Indian and American, who helped jazz find a home in the subcontinent. Fernandes gives an illustrated talk, with archival photographs and strains of jazz, transporting us to swing time in Bombay.

Book signing to follow. *Double Bill with 5x15.

The Merchant of ImagesAradhana Seth

“I ask myself often, is home a person, place or thing? I think it’s both person and place. The

“actual” thing – not so much. But the memory, the longing, the loss, is more than the object itself.” – A R A D H A N A S E T H

Award-winning art director and production designer Aradhana Seth brings a curious travelling public art project to Vancouver this July. Pushing a mobile photo booth, much like those used by Indian street vendors, Aradhana Seth will travel through Vancouver as a wandering merchant of images, offering a seat at her photo booth to everyone who wishes to be photographed against her stunning backdrop. The Merchant of Images is inspired by her work as art director for Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited.

In this outdoor installation, Mumbai-based artist Reena Saini Kallat recreates migration routes across the world through a symbolic web of human and cultural movement and exchange. The expansion of urban spaces all around the world has led to mass migration and new social conflicts within the global social structure, provoking issues related to identity, survival and spiritual needs. As a city characterized by diversity, Vancouver’s urban and cultural landscapes are also in a state of constant transformation.

Originally conceived and exhibited as part of the Göteborg International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Offsite: Woven Chronicle is presented by Vancouver Art Gallery in association with Indian Summer Festival, and curated by Diana Freundl, Assistant Curator.

“Reena Saini Kallat is an artist wholly absorbed by the never-ending cycle of nature, and the fragility of the human condition in its hands.” – S A F F R O N A R T

Laughing Yoga is a unique, energizing and entertaining yoga practice for everyone. In this session, Nish Thaver will combine laughter exercises with yoga breathing. The buses and trucks of South Asia are moving art galleries, a kaleidoscope of patterns, motifs, and beautifully lettered couplets and sayings. No two vehicles look alike, and the decorations are a testimony to the aesthetic richness of the subcontinent, and the self-expression of each vehicle’s driver.

Renowned graphic artist Orijit Sen designs a special public art project, transforming a Vancouver city bus into an Indian one for a month. Sen combines the energy and vibrancy of truck art with his own graphic novelist’s whimsical style to create a bus like Vancouver has never seen before.

from Punjab, with LoveOrijit Sen

First presented at Indian Summer Festival 2014 and now on at the Surrey Art Gallery, Orijit Sen’s mural is stunning in scope and staggering in detail, rendered in a hybrid form that melds the Mughal miniature style of painting with Sen’s own graphic novelist’s eye. It was born out of a larger project that was closely associated with the Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum, a multi-media museum and cultural centre in the holy city of Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, India.

The mural depicts and celebrates the daily life, history, myths and festivities of Punjab. It is a tribute, a reflection and an affirmation of the irrepressible, indomitable Punjabi spirit – spirit that has a home here in BC, while remaining linked to the ‘land of five rivers’ several oceans away.

“The parallel realities of the past and the present seem to bring to their [Punjabis’] everyday existence a special something: a sense of life that is lived in the here and now, of joys and sorrows that are experienced and expressed without reservation; something that remains open-hearted and generous, and laughs in the face of troubles.” – O R I J I T S E N

Goonj! Being Brown in ChinatownJagdeep Raina, Yule Ken Lum & Nisha Sembi

Goonj! Being Brown in Chinatown brings together young artists who are engaged with the processes of historic remembering and re-imagining. They centre South Asian history in the space of an early, emerging Chinatown and interact with the revolutionary echoes of past and future struggles. Emerging artist Jagdeep Raina uses charcoal and paint to refashion archival photos of South Asians as palimpsests of history and memory. Yule Ken Lum stitches together old blue jeans to reconstruct a blue chromotype photograph taken in the aftermath of the Chinatown Race Riot of 1907. Bay Area-based graffiti artist Nisha Sembi reconnects the histories of the Pacific Coast Ghadar movements through pop art and graffiti.

Surrounded by archival images of the Sikh community, the voices of immigrants in song, and old issues of freedom newspapers, Goonj creates the evidence of our past by seeing old forms in new ways.

Curated by Naveen Girn of Digital Handloom.

Sad that ISF2015 is over? The fun continues at this special performance by local band Unison on the SFU Celebration Stage at Surrey Fusion Festival.

Unison’s message is unity through music, with diverse musicians coming together as one united force. Drawing on classical and folk traditions from China, India, Pakistan and Zimbabwe, Unison demonstrates how musical styles from seemingly disparate reaches of the planet can make beautiful harmony. The group includes seasoned world music artists who have shared their music around the world: Curtis Andrews (mridangam, mbira), Mohamed Assani (sitar) and Nicole Li (erhu, qin).
