DEVILS LAKE BULL SESSION
Beginning in April of 1990 anall Navy reunion took place inDevils Lake, North Dakota, a threeday affair hosted by CarlBloomquist. They arrived fromNorth and South Dakota,Minnesota, and Canada. This car-ried on for twenty years, andVeterans from all branches of theArmed Forces were soon includedin that annual get together, first atThe VFW and Elks Club down-town, and when the attendees num-bered up in the hundreds, to the newElks Club east of town. As timewent on and numbers dwindled, theKC facilities were utilized, plus theCity Hall auditorium.
The 1993 picture seen hereshows attendees from the Velvaarea who enjoyed the three-dayevent that year. They are, from left,Clifford and Leola Hystad, Ernestand Helga Haga, Don and UrsulaWunderlich, Hilton and CarolineSollid, and Walter and MarlysGjellstad . Charles and DorisChristie also attended for severalyears.
Labeled a “Bull Session” fromthe beginning, that is exactly what itwas, for the most part. A Saturdaynight banquet always featured akeynote speaker, with formerGovernor Bill Guy as the first one.A publication labeled simply “TheLog” described events of the previ-ous year, and a lot of “sea stories”submitted by those who attended.Carl Bloomquist remained thechairman of the group, and BobLindblom of Butte became the offi-
cial poet Laureate, coming up withmany good and unusual narrationseach year. Ursula Wunderlichserved as Chaplain for most of thetwenty years of the session, presid-ing at the Sunday morning memori-al Services. Carl, Alta, Dale, andBetty Bloomquist, DarleneZimmerman, Duane Carter, andmany more volunteers from theDevils Lake area spent countlesshours getting each annual event inplace, which took a lot of effortyear around. Sadly, Chairman Carlpassed away more than a year ago.Going to the Session was the high-light of the year for many of theattendees that arrived from far andwide, thanks to Carl.
The group lives on, as the boardof directors has met several times ayear since the last annual three-dayevent took place. Over the years alarge Maritime museum was creat-ed and is still in place at the CivicAuditorium. Beginning in the com-ing summer, many of those artifactswill be on loan to the Devils LakeHistorical Society, to be viewed inthe old downtown Post Officemuseum on a rotating basis. Withlots of room at that location, and anelevator in the offing, those itemswill be more easily accessed. It isworth a trip over to that Lakesidedestination, with lunch at the OldMain Street Café as an added incen-tive.
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Ernie Kouba whopassed away in Minot.
I’ve been going and doing diamond art at Lillian Domres’ MidwestPrinting. It’s fun and time consuming, and the pictures are very n ice whenfinished.
Lillian Domres was in Minot this weekend for Dru Domres’ 4th birth-day. Dru is Lillian’s great granddaughter.
