A farmer buys a horse for $60. He sells it to his neighbor for $70. Then he discovers he could have made a better deal. He borrows $10 from his wife, and buys the horse back for $80. He then sells it to another neighbor for $90. How much money did he make?

What are Like Terms?
Like Terms are expressions that have the same variable part with the same exponent.
When combining like terms, we only add the coefficients.
Examples: 3x + 4x =
x2 + 3x2 =
7b 9b =

Lesson Title Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Subject Mathematics Grade 7/8 Strand Algebra
Objective The objective of this lesson is to simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.
Page 1 Title page.
Page 2 An algebraic expression is made up of algebraic terms. An algebraic term can contain variables, coefficients and constants. Like terms are terms which contain the same variables raised to the same power. Click for a hint to reveal the variables. “What do we mean by simplifying expressions?” (Writing the expression in its most compact form.) This usually involves combining like terms. Ask a student volunteer to simplify the expression and write the answer in the box. Scroll down the screen shade to reveal the answer.
Page 3 Identify the like terms by dragging the jigsaw pieces together. Remind students that ‘like terms’ means the variable has to be raised to the same power. x and x2 are not like terms.
Page 4 Solution to previous page.
Page 5 Practice simplifying algebraic expressions. Use the Pen Tool to fill in the blanks. The first problem has been partially completed. Drag answers from the side of the screen.
Page 6 Further practice.
Page 7 Simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms. In these examples the algebraic expressions contain more than one variable. Use the commutative property to group the like terms together and then simplify. The terms can be dragged to illustrate this.
Page 8 Practice simplifying algebraic expressions. The terms can be dragged to group the like terms together.
Page 9 First use the distributive property to remove the parentheses. Then simplify as before. Click on the number buttons on the side of the page to reveal the steps.
Page 10 Simplify the algebraic expressions using the distributive and commutative properties. In the last example remind students that when there is a minus before the parentheses, when the parentheses are removed the sign inside the parentheses changes to the opposite sign.
