A Farewell to ArmsWWI Group

The title of this book has everything to do with the story. Ernest Hemingway called it “A Farewell To Arms” because Henry, the main character, does not support the war one bit.

After a while, he leaves the army and all of the fighting, because he was giving “a farewell to arms”, meaning he was leaving the war for good.

What A “Farewell to Arms” Means

What I thought about the blog was that it would have been cool if all of my group members stuck to the reading at the same paste that I was so I can express my thoughts on the blog without ruining the rest of the book for them.

But then again I gain some insight from what they posted and reminded me of what happened earlier in the book. Also I learned a few new things from reading the blog

My job as word watcher was to find what words were used more often and find words that I or my group members may not know and I have defined a couple

Cholera:  An acute, infectious disease, endemic in India and China and occasionally epidemic elsewhere, characterized by profuse diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, etc.

Bawdy:  indecent; lewd; obscene: another of his bawdy stories.

My job as “Word Watcher”

When I first started to read the book I did not really make sense of what was going on until Mr. Henry had to go to the hospital.

My experience of reading was very boring and I did not have much curiosity towards the next part in the book until the end

The ending could have played out a lot better and the book did not really lead to some amazing or heroic thing like I thought the book was going to.

Reading the Book

I thought the book was very boring and reason being is because not enough war action and a little too much of romance and just not enough emotion on what the characters felt and thought that the characters had to say things twice every time they spoke and really the idea of this book was very uninteresting.

Opinion of the Book

My Thoughts on the Book In my honest opinion, I thought the book was kind of boring. It sort of dragged on and it was not that interesting to me at all.

It seemed like a cheesy love story to me and I just didn’t buy any of it at all. I did not like how the book ended as well, it made me reading the whole book pointless in my opinion.

I wish the book could have ended in a much better way than how it originally did, so I would have enjoyed how the main character, Henry, turned out in the end, instead of the way it

did.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 10, because of the ending and how long it seemed to drag.

My Opinion on the BlogAt first, I did not like the thought of having a blog

that we would have to check daily, and honestly, I didn’t check it daily. But in the end, It wasn’t all that bad to me. It sort of helped with our group keeping tabs with each other and discussing on what part of the book we were on. We could also put our input on different sections of the book and how we felt about it, which helped somewhat.

I did not mind the blog and it helped in a way, but overall I did not like it that much.

JESSICA'S OPINION OF THE BOOK When reading “A farewell to Arms” I thought

it was a very interesting book. It got boring at times but how Ernest Hemingway talked it made you feel like you were there. I loved the whole point of the book on how he is in the war and how he gets rough situations and different roads that he had to take. I would recommend this book. If you love exciting books that keeps you on your toes with romantic sides when you read it you would love this book. There’s not many war books that I read and liked. When having Ernest talk-about the front made it even better.

JESSICA’S OPINION ON THE BLOG When reading “A Farewell to Arms” we had

to blog and keep track of what was going on. I personally like it. The only reason I would read was to blog three times a week. It was very easy. I really liked it in the end. We could talk to each other and understand where everyone was. To blog you had to read it is the only way you could blog. It helped me understand the book in a better way. We used the blog that was meant for school and that was the best part. When I had nothing to do in 4th or 6th period I would blog and I really like the blogging site!

WHAT ONE QUESTION WOULD YOU ASK THE WRITER IF YOU GOT THE CHANCE? WHY? If I had to ask one question to Ernest

Hemmingway I would ask, Why did he create this book? I think this book is a semi auto-biography but what is the truth and what is a lie? There are certain parts in the book that you can tell was real and you can tell that it happened because there not in quotes. So in the end what is real and what isn’t real in his book.

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANCE IN THIS SECTION? HOW AND WHY DID IT HAPPEN? When looking at “A Farewell to Arms” the most

important part in Book one is when Mr. Henry gets blown up at the front and he explains how his friend dies right next to him. That’s an important factor in the book for a war story. Most important part in book 2w was when he needed surgery and he didn’t wait he took the immediate surgery. In Book 3 the most important part was when Henry got transferred to the front but soon left and traveled and soon experienced another man dying. In book 4 the most important part was when Henry escaped the bad people who was going to kill him; be soon went to see his true love.

MARLENE’S OPINION OF THE BOOK I thought the book was good. I liked

it but I probably would not read it again because in the beginning it takes a while for it to become interesting.

MARLENE’S THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BLOG

I thought the blog was good. It was helpful because in the blog there were some small summaries that helped us in our reading to under stand the book better. Also a short description about the characters in the book.

CONNECTOR- WHAT OTHER PLACES OR PEOPLE COULD YOU COMPARE THIS STORY TO? You can compare this story to soldiers at

war.  Also to teenagers that fall in love and run away together, since Catherine and Henry fell in love and ran away together so that they could live their lives safely and peacefully.

4TH SLIDE- CONNECTOR- WHAT OTHER BOOK OR STORIES MIGHT YOU COMPARE TO THIS ONE? Another book that is similar to this one would

be another book by Hemingway that also takes place during WW1 called The Sun Also Rises. The two main characters, Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley, also meet during WW1 and fall in love but in the end don't end up together.

What side is Mr. Henry telling his story on in the war?

When Mr. Henry was sick with jaundice why did Miss. Vancamper send him back to the front?

What is Rihaldi to Mr. Henry? Why does the nurse Ms. Ferguson hate Mr.

Henry?

Answers Mr. Henry was telling on the Irish side of

the war. Ms. Vancamper sent him back to the

front because he was drinking too much and see saw that so sent him right back to the front.

Rihaldi was Mr. Henry’s roommate and a friend to him

Ms. Ferguson hated Mr. Henry because she thought he was a bad man because he was an American fighting for the Italian side.
