OPERATIONS UPDATE

Hello friends of Saint Luke’s Place, welcome to Fall! I have always seen Fall as a time of new beginnings. For me it is more like the start of the New Year than January 1st is. New beginnings are exciting and often bring new opportunities with them.

We have an opportunity on our horizon, as we begin recruiting for new members of Family Council. All Long-Term Care Homes have a Family Council.

What is a Family Council? Family Council is an organized, self-led, self-determining, democratic group composed of family and friends of the residents of a Long-Term Care Home. The main purposes of a Family Council are to improve the quality of life of Long-Term Care residents and to give families and friends a forum for sharing their experiences, learning and exchanging information.

A Family Council works with residents’ family members or friends and the Long-Term Care Home to identify and resolve issues that affect residents’ quality of life, plan activities for residents, families and staff, and support each other. Most Family Councils work with a Family Council Staff Assistant. Our staff assistant is Nicole Bassarab. She is our amazing social worker and volunteer coordinator.

While each Family Council is unique, Family Councils in general focus on improving the quality of life and assuring quality of care for all residents and supporting each other.

If you would be interested in being a part of our Family Council, please contact Nicole at 519-658-5183 x 264. We meet every other month, so the commitment isn`t too daunting, while at the same time providing you with a meaningful way to give back.

Until next time, Staci.

NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY Marlena Books publishes books by a group of authors from Waterloo Region who write age-appropriate adaptive books for people with dementia so that they can still enjoy reading. On September 6th the owner of Marlena Books, Rachel Thompson, will be accompanied by some of the authors who will take part in a book reading in the Auditorium from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. This will be of interest to Long Term Care residents, family members and volunteers. On the same day, the readings will be followed up with a workshop from 5:00pm to 6:00pm on learning the benefits for seniors and how to use the books that Marlena Books produces. Samples will be available for view.

MEET A BOARD MEMBER: STEVE PARKER

More recently, in 2016, he purchased the Lounsbury Funeral Home in Cambridge (Hespeler) and continues to own and operate both funeral homes serving the residents of Cambridge in their time of need. Driven by his compassionate need to serve others and his commitment to the community, Steve is honoured to serve on the Saint Luke’s Place Board of Directors. Steve found a home on the Board of Directors at Saint Luke’s Place and has served as chair of the finance committee and later serving a 2 year term as president of the Board. He is committed to the residents of Saint Luke’s Place in helping to ensure that it truly becomes their home rather than just a place to live.

SEPTEMBER

September, month of moodiness and change, When our bright nourisher the sun, halfway Between the earth’s most near, most distant range, Draws early veils of darkness over day. September! I can see myself in you As in a mirror. In late-life I pause To take a backward look, a forward view, And bow regretfully to Nature’s laws.

Sheila White

Steve Parker joined the Board of Directors at Saint Luke’s Place in 2006. Steve has been a resident of Cambridge for almost 40 years. A licensed Ontario funeral director, Steve worked in the Cambridge area as a director before joining the staff at Corbett Funeral Home shortly after it opened in 1987. After 18 years of service to that company he purchased the funeral home in 2006, becoming the owner and managing director.

It’s been another wonderful summer and I’m so encouraged to see the impact our volunteers are having around Saint Luke’s Place. I want to take this opportunity to thank, in particular, our volunteers who have kept our gardens looking lovely and our coffee shop running smoothly over the summer months. It is such a pleasure to walk out around the grounds with residents and enjoy the beauty of so many different plants and flowers. For the residents in Long Term Care who aren’t always able to get out on their own as they once did, the flowers have played a special part in bringing happiness to their day. Thank you to all our gardening volunteers for the hours of planting, watering, weeding, and trimming that you have done to keep Saint Luke’s looking at its best. I want to thank the Auxiliary and all the coffee shop volunteers as well for keeping the coffee flowing and the store buzzing this summer. I know with vacation schedules to juggle and people coming and going, having the store open fully on volunteer service is not an easy task. Your dedication is amazing! The coffee is great too!
