Dear Owner Plumbers Choice

I will be putting this on my Facebook page.

I recently discovered my pressure temperature relief valve was faulty on my solar hot water service.

After a phone consult with my plumber I decided to source one myself. I found a mob called Plumbers Choice.

When they asked for my plumbers licence number and I said that I didn't have one, they announced that they could not provide me with the valve.

Apparently it is their strict policy only to ship to plumbers.

Now to me, this smells of saying as customers we don't trust you. They did suggest I could have my plumber purchase from them. I feel they have a real cheek suggesting I should provide them with a customer after treating me that way.

Moral of the story? Don't use this mob, Plumbers Choice, whatever you do!

I will be sure to let everyone in my network know about your (Trade Only) policy.

As you can read our Trade Only policy is not for everyone and that's the point. Our tradesmen customers appreciate what we are doing but that does mean turning some potential customers away. We clearly state our trade only policy on our website. We have clear notices on our building at all entrances, but

get the message. When a DIY customer arrives at the counter we politely refuse service and suggest they call their local plumber. It is interesting to note we had a person from the marketing department of a very large plumbing supplies test out our policy and was rather embarrassed when he was found out.

Yes, the policy does cost us some sales in the short term, but the encouragement and support we get from plumbers across the country

make.

Everywhere I look these days I am turning up to home handyman disasters waiting to happen.

It has become too easy for consumers to watch a DIY Youtube clip and then buy products and supplies over the counter and I am experiencing an alarming number of very dangerous jobs including

and gas leaks, just to name a few things. Most of these could have serious consequences for the home owner and

the time to share the two most recent doozeys I've seen!

The disturbing part is that the very elaborate system took the diverted waste water and temporarily stored it in a garbage bin sunk into the garden, but the water was not used on the garden as you might expect!!! When it was required the dirty water was pumped up to a header tank in the roof that fed a tap in the kitchen for an alternate water supply for washing up and doing the dishes!!

Needless to say, after a lecture of just how dangerous the whole system was, I removed the entire mess at his expense, pipes and all! I politely suggested the

Again, the amateur home handyman 'plumber' didn't want to fork out for a natural gas conversion kit for his BBQ (available at Bunnings). After a trip to said hardware store and some handy 'tips' from a salesperson (who explained that natural gas would need larger jets and a different regulator, etc) the man improvised a regulator out of an old Oxy acetylene regulator and then drilled out the jets in the BBQ with a drill bit. The

The customer offered to show me just how well his creation worked, claiming faster cooking and the added bonus that the regulator was adjustable depending on how many burners he had lit!! I politely declined the offer of a demo and explained that by law I could not knowingly leave the appliance in that state (it was also leaking gas). I capped

that I had done so. Surprise, surprise, the very next day, after a chat with his wife, the customer called me requesting a quote to replace the entire gas line and convert his BBQ back to bottled gas! Needless to say, that's exactly what I did.

It would be nice to think that in my lifetime something could be done to deter unlicensed people from performing their own plumbing work for everyone's sake! A TV add campaign would be a good start.
