ABSTRACT

In the spring and summer of 1 980 a survey was conducted of the primary

wood-using industries in Manitoba, including sawmills, planing mills, wood treating

plants, and pulp, paper, and fiberboard mills. Information was collected on mill

location, ownership, capacity, wood supply, current production and employment,

products, markets, marketing agents, woodlands equipment, mill facilities, and

limiting factors for operation and expansion.

INTRODUCTION

Most of the information in this directory was collected during the spring and

summer of 1980 by staff of the Northern Forest Research Centre through

interviews with personnel of Manitoba's primary wood-using industries. This survey

was followed up and information verified by telephone interviews and from records

of the Forestry Branch, Manitoba Department of Natural Resources.

In this directory, Manitoba's primary wood-using industries are grouped into

five activity categories: (1) sawmill-planing complexes, (2) independent planing

mills, (3) wood treating plants, (4) miscellaneous wood-using industries' (including

building timber, pallet , and post and pole plants), and (5) pulp, paper, and

fiberboard mills. Also provided are the names of log producers and their output

and a list of known idle (but potentially productive) sawmills in 1979-80.

Sawmill-planing complexes have been grouped by output into four classes: (1)

more than 5 MM fbm, (2) 1 MM to 4.999 MM fbm, (3) 1 00 M to- 999 M fbm, and (4)

less than 100 M fbm per year. There has been no attempt to separately describe

sawmills and planing mills that function as integrated operations ; however, planing

mills that operate independently through purchase of rough lumber or those that

resaw and plane existing rough lumber are listed in a separate category. Included

in the section on pulp and paper mills are fiberboard mills and those building

material plants whose manufacturing process is identical or bears close

resemblance to that for pulp and paper.

Information on mill location, ownership, capacity, wood supply, current

production and employment, products, markets, marketing agents, woodlands

equipment, and mill facilities is provided for each of Manitoba's primary wood

using industries. Highlights for 1979-80 include the production . of approximately

1 4 1 MM fbm of lumber and 1 1 M bone dry units (2400 lbs) of wood chips by the

M ANITOBA'S TIM BER ALLOCATION SYSTEM

The province of Manitoba has three basic methods for allocating timber to the private sector:

1 . Negotiated agreements are in force with only the very largest forest industry companies.

2. Timber sales are the principal means of allocating timber to the forest industry for periods longer than 1 year. There are three types:

a. Quotas b. Auction sales c. Special allocations

3. Timber permits are the principal means of allocating timber to relatively small operators and are in effect for 1 year only. There are four types:

a. Quotas b. Salvage c. Settler's permit d. Fuel-wood permits

Also included are those primary wood-using industries that harvest roundwood they cannot process themselves but which they subsequently sell to the domestic market or export. SELECTED CONVERSION FACTORS FOR TIM BER PRODUCTS

The conversion factors used for this directory are approximate values only and are based on certain generalizations and assumptions. The true value may vary depending on tree size (diameter and height), species, manufacturing practice, log rule, saw kerf , etc. For example, the conversion for cubic foot to board foot varies from 5.7 1 bd ft/cu ft for an 8" diameter log to 6.68 bd ft/cu ft for a 1 2" diameter log.
