Introduction to Clogs
Clogs are footwear that are made either partly or completely of wood.
They come in different varieties such as clog sandals, clog boots etc.
They have been in use for centuries, with slight variations within generations.
Types of Clogs
Wooden Upper Clogs – Made out of a hollowed lump of wood.
Half Open Clogs – Have open soles, more like sandals.
Wooden Heeled Clogs – Clogs with added wooden heels.
Types of Clogs
English Clogs: Clogs with uppers made of leather for protection from cold.
Clog Sandals: Sandals with wooden soles and synthetic straps.
Overshoes: Wooden soles worn over other shoes for protection
Clog Boots: Boots made of rubber or synthetic uppers and wooden soles.
Region-Specific Clog Variants
Spanish Albarca – Whole foot clogs with rotating front ‘feet’.
Japanese Clogs – Flat Wooden Soles with high wooden pegs attached at the bottom.
Indian Clogs – Similar to the Japanese variant. They also come in a variant with a single nook in the center for holding feet.
Origins
It is not clearly known where specifically clogs originated, but Europe is the widely believed area of inception.
An ancient version of them were used by the Romans and the Greeks.
Most traditional post-ancient clogs are believed to have originated from Sweden and Netherlands.
