The Federal Way Chorale is supported by grants from the Arts Commissions of King County and the City ofFederal Way, and Capital One with many other private and corporate donors.

The Federal Way ChoraleThe Federal Way Chorale wishes to provide an opportunity for talented vocalists in

Federal Way and surrounding communities to learn and perform exciting choral litera-ture from all ages and styles. We belong to the Chorale because we receive much joyfrom singing. We take great pride in our accomplishments, and so we always strive forexcellence. This spring will include a performance of Rutter's "Requiem." Those wish-ing to be considered for membership are encouraged to call music director Don Bar-rows at (253) 854-0868 for an audition. The next audition date is January s-.

Don Barrows, Conductor/Artistic Director

A graduate of Gonzaga University, Don received his masters degree from EasternWashington State University. During his thirty years of teaching, Don attended nu-merous workshops with conductors such as Norman Luboff, Roger Wagner, RobertShaw, John Rutter, Maurice Skones, Paul Salmonovich, and Weston Noble. Don taughtat a number of high schools throughout the State of Washington whichincluded: Colville, Foster, Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln of Tacoma, Kentridge, and Decatur.Don is presently the choirmaster at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Federal Way;a position he has held for over twenty years. In the Spring of 1993 another dream ofDon's came true with the establishment of Federal Way's own community choir, theFederal Way Chorale.

Philip Wilkinson, Accompanist

Philip Wilkinson studied piano privately for fifteen years and was active as soloist, recitalist, and accompanist. He is currently organist at Grace Lutheran Church in DesMoines. Most recently, he was heard as pianist for the acclaimed production of "ByeBye Birdie" presented by Auburn's Rainier Middle SchooL He also played violin in publicschool, later switching to viola. He is a violist with the Rainier Symphony, BellevueOpera, and Ballet Bellevue, performing in a recent holiday production of Sleeping Beauty. In his spare time he plays fiddle with several Scandinavian and Celtic groups and canbe heard on occasion at the Pike Place Market. Philip was born in Auburn, attended lo-cal schools and graduated from the University of Washington.

Notes .rom the DirectorI had a number of inquiries as to what our Christmas theme, If A Day for Dancing"

meant. Actually the theme is a spin off of the title of one of our major works on thisconcert; "A Day for Dancing" written by American contemporary composer LloydPfautsch. That explains where the theme came from, but what does" A Day for Dancing"mean and what does it have to do with Christmas? The title comes from the medievalcarol "Tomorrow Shall BeMy Dancing Day" and there has been much written, pondered, discussed about its meaning. Most scholars feel this is its meaning. The song is writtenas if the words are those of Christ speaking prior to His birth; thus "Tomorrow Shall BeMy Dancing Day!". In other areas of the complete carol, Christ talks of His "true love,"which is his church, you and me. It was a custom in medieval times for the faithful todance around the Cresche (manger scene) as they sang and thus, we have a major workof carols that were meant to be used as dances. It's the Advent season and the mangerscene is not here yet, and we won't be physically dancing. But in our minds, we aredancing, we are celebrating and in that, we invite you to celebrate and dance along withus. May Christ's peace be with us all this very holy season.

Coming Chorale EventsSpring season will be full for the Chorale. On March 2nd and 3rd we perform Joseph

Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" with the Federal Way Symphony. A most interestingchoice given the events since September 11th. The fact is, this work was selected a yearago! Even more remarkable. Because of September 11th, the Chorale thought it wouldbe fitting to use as our Spring theme" An American Celebration"; programming manyfavorite American patriotic songs, folk songs, spirituals, and hymns, celebrating whowe are and in what we believe. In memory of September 11th, we will also performJohn Rutter's very beautiful "Requiem." This concert will take place at St. Luke'sLutheran Church on May 18th and 19th. If you would like to sing in the Chorale, nowwould be a great time to join. Call Don at (253) 854-0868 or email him:[email protected] for more information. The next audition date is January 5th.
