Tennysonwasnorecluse.HeshunnedsocietyintheordinaryLondonsense,buthewelcomedkindredspiritstohisbeautifulhome,withlarge-heartedcordiality.TobeacquaintedwithFarringfordwasinitselfaliberaleducation.Farringfordwasanidealhomeforagreatpoet.Tobeginwith,itwassomewhatsecludedandremotefromtheworld'sways,especiallyintheearly'fifties,whentheIsleofWightwasmuchmoreofa_terraincognita_thantrafficnowpermits.Onehadtotraveldownsomehundredmilesfromtown,crossfromthequaintlittleNewForestportofLymingtontothestillquainterlittleold-worldYarmouth--"amediævalVenice,"thepoetcalledit--andthendrivesomemilestoFreshwater,beforeoneattainedthestately

lovelinessofFarringfordemboweredintrees.

Subjecttoslightinevitablevariations,acertainmethodandroutinegovernedthedayofTennyson.Hehaddefiniteworking-times,indoorsandout,andaccustomedhabitsoffamilylife.ThemorningbroughthimlettersfromallpartsofEngland:therewashardlyanygreatmanwhodidnotdesiretoexchangesalutationsanddiscussworld-subjectswithathinkersofarabovetherest.Thepoet,withthepropheticsoulofgenius,hadalwaysbeenwellinadvanceofhistimes.

"ForIdiptintothefuture,farashumaneyecouldsee,SawtheVisionoftheworld,andallthewonderthatwouldbe;Sawtheheavensfillwithcommerce,argosiesofmagicsails,Pilotsofthepurpletwilight,droppingdownwithcostlybales;Heardtheheavensfillwithshouting,andthererainedaghastlydewFromthenations'airynaviesgrapplinginthecentralblue;Faralongtheworld-widewhisperofthesouth-windrushingwarm,Withthestandardsofthepeoplesplungingthroughthethunderstorm;Tillthewar-drumthrobbednolonger,andthebattleflagswerefurledIntheParliamentofman,theFederationoftheworld.

ThedailypapersaresomewhatlateinreachingtheIsleofWight:butthepoetcouldfindinspirationeveninasourcesoapparentlyprosaicasa_Times_column.Henoteddownsomeofthosevaliantandsoul-stirringepisodeswhichgounrecordedsavebyapassing

paragraph:andthepoemwhich,perhaps,hasheldthepublicfancylongest,the_ChargeoftheLightBrigade_,waswrittenafewminutesafterreadingthe_Times'_descriptionofthebattlecontainingthephrase"Someonehadblundered."

"Halfaleague,halfaleague,Halfaleagueonward,AllinthevalleyofDeathRodethesixhundred.'Forward,theLightBrigade!Chargefortheguns!'hesaid:IntothevalleyofDeathRodethesixhundred.

"'Forward,theLightBrigade!'Wasthereamandismay'd?Nottho'thesoldierknewSomeonehadblunder'd:Their'snottomakereply,Their'snottoreasonwhy,Their'sbuttodoanddie:IntothevalleyofDeathRodethesixhundred.

Alittlewhileafterbreakfast,Tennysonwouldretiretohis"den"onthetopstorey,forthat"sacredhalf-hour"devotedtopoeticalcomposition,andassistedbyhisbelovedpipe,duringwhichnobodydareddisturbhim.Thisden,orstudy,formedasettingworthyofitsinmate.Everyinchofwallwascoveredwithportrait,sketches,

drawings.Almosteverydistinguishednameofthenineteenthcenturywasinsomemannerrepresentedhere:thepoetliterallyworkedsurroundedbyhisfriends.Andinthiscongenialatmospherehedevotedhimselftothatlife-longpursuitofhis,ashehasimageditinthe"Gleam,"which"flyingonward,wedtothemelody,sangthroughtheworld."

WhateverrespectivevaluesafuturegenerationmaysetuponTennyson's



work,therecanbelittledoubtthathehimselfconsideredthe_IdyllsoftheKing_,withitsinnerspiritualmeanings,ashisgreatestwork."ThereisnosinglefactorincidentintheIdylls,"hesaid,"whichcannotbeexplainedwithoutanymysteryorallegorywhatever."Hencetheirappealtotheleastmysticalreader,throughsheerbeautyoflanguageandsuperbpictorialeffect.Butatthesametimeheletitbeknownthathiswholestorywasinherentlyoneofpuresymbolism:startingfromthesuggestionthatArthurrepresentedconscience.Thisideaispredominant,withoutundueinsistenceuponit,in_Guinevere_.

_IdyllsoftheKing._

Inthecourseofthedaythepoetwoulddevoteconsiderabletimeand

energytohisfavouriteexerciseofgardenwork.Toplanttreesandshrubs,torollthelawn,todigthekitchengarden,andlovinglytotendthesimpleflowerswhichhehadset,washisconstantdelightaslongashisstrengthsufficed.Hehadapassionatelove,andanextraordinaryknowledgeofNature:herejoicedinwatchingthebirdsinhisgreatcedar,ilexandfirtrees,andhismindwasthoroughlyattunedtothesweetinfluencesofcolourandfoliage.Fewelsecouldhavewrittenthatunsurpassablelyric,_ComeintotheGarden,Maud_.

"Comeintothegarden,Maud,Fortheblackbat,night,hasflown,Comeintothegarden,Maud,Iamhereatthegatealone;

Andthewoodbinespicesarewaftedabroad,Andthemuskoftheroseisblown.Forabreezeofmorningmoves,AndtheplanetofLoveisonhigh,BeginningtofaintinthelightthatshelovesOnabedofdaffodilsky.Tofaintinthelightofthesunsheloves,Tofaintinhislight,andtodie....

ThesameloveofNaturemadehiseyealertforeveryobscurestbeauty,whenheputasidehisgardeningtoolsandstarted,aswashiswont,forastrollwithsomefriendalongthegloriouscliffsofFreshwater.Thosewerefavouredfolk,who,likeMrs.ThackerayRitchie,"walkedwithTennysonalongHighDown,treadingtheturf,listeningtohistalk,whilethegullscamesideways,flashingtheirwhitebreastsagainsttheedgeofthecliff,andthePoet'scloakflappedtimetothegustsofthewestwind."ThiscloakandthePoetwerepracticallysynonymous.Itfigures--afirsteditionofit--inalltheearlysketchesofhimbySpedding,Fitzgerald,etc.(1830-40)andtothe

last,onecanhardlyimaginehimapartfromit.

Duringthesequietrambleshewaswonttodiscusswithenthusiasmthereligiousandsocialproblemsoftheday;theyweighedheavilyuponhisthoughtfulmind.Hisphilosophywasahopefulone,rootedinChristianbelief,yetconstantlyover-shadowedbyfugitivemisgivingsandbyasenseoftheimpermanenceofhumanexistence.Andwhilevoicingthesemisgivingsinlineswhichmightgivepausetoweakerminds,heneverlosthisfirmfaithinright,induty,andinultimaterectificationofallapparentwrong.

Theafternoonwasspent,sometimesinfurthergardeningpursuits,sometimesinadrivearoundthepeacefulIslandlanesandthatch-browedvillages;frequentlytherewerevisitorstobemetat

Yarmouth,wheretheTennysons'carriagemightoftenbeseeninthequaintcobbledstreets.ThesoftandlovelycolouringoftheSolentwasonetoattractthepoet'sfancy:anditwasaftercomingfreshlyonedayintosightofthefamiliarwatersoftheestuary,andatide,"thatmovingseemstoofullforsoundorfoam,"lappingthelichenedsea-wallsofYarmouth,thathecomposed,inhiseighty-firstyear,theversesthathedevisedtobeplacedattheendofhiswholecollectedpoems:--"CrossingtheBar."Themysticsimplicityoftheselinesstrikestheverykey-noteofhischaracter.

Teawasservedinthedrawing-room,"itsorielwindowfullofgreenandgoldenlights,ofthesoundsofbirdsandofthedistantsea."Theairofextremeandunstudiedsimplicity,whichdominatedthewholeFarringfordhousehold,wasjustasnoticeablehere.Teawasahappygatheringofthefamilyandfriends,enlivenedwithtalkoncurrenttopics.TheLaureate'ssympathieswerewide-reaching,andhisconversation,forcibleandoftenracy,wascharacterisedbythestrongestcommon-sense.Heheldfirmly-definedviewsonallsocialsubjects;andhaddeclaredhimselfonthequestionof"Woman'sRights"--thencomparativelyfresh--atconsiderablelengthin_ThePrincess_.

"Thewoman'scauseisman's:theyriseorsinkTogether,dwarf'dorgod-like,bondorfree....Forwomanisnotundeveloptman,Butdiverse:couldwemakeherastheman,SweetLovewereslain:hisdearestbondisthis,Notliketolike,butlikeindifference.Yetinthelongyearslikermusttheygrow;Themanbemoreofwoman,sheofman;Hegaininsweetnessandinmoralheight,Norlosethewrestlingthewsthatthrowtheworld;

Thepoet'sidealofwomanwassetveryhigh:heheldhertobefaraboveman,morallyandspiritually:andanidealasperfectasmaywellbeconceivedwasdailybeforehiseyes,inthepersonofhisbeautifulwife,withherpureandsaintlyface:whowasyet
