Alittlewhileafterbreakfast,Tennysonwouldretiretohis"den"onthetopstorey,forthat"sacredhalf-hour"devotedtopoeticalcomposition,andassistedbyhisbelovedpipe,duringwhichnobodydareddisturbhim.Thisden,orstudy,formedasettingworthyofitsinmate.Everyinchofwallwascoveredwithportrait,sketches,

drawings.Almosteverydistinguishednameofthenineteenthcenturywasinsomemannerrepresentedhere:thepoetliterallyworkedsurroundedbyhisfriends.Andinthiscongenialatmospherehedevotedhimselftothatlife-longpursuitofhis,ashehasimageditinthe"Gleam,"which"flyingonward,wedtothemelody,sangthroughtheworld."

energytohisfavouriteexerciseofgardenwork.Toplanttreesandshrubs,torollthelawn,todigthekitchengarden,andlovinglytotendthesimpleflowerswhichhehadset,washisconstantdelightaslongashisstrengthsufficed.Hehadapassionatelove,andanextraordinaryknowledgeofNature:herejoicedinwatchingthebirdsinhisgreatcedar,ilexandfirtrees,andhismindwasthoroughlyattunedtothesweetinfluencesofcolourandfoliage.Fewelsecouldhavewrittenthatunsurpassablelyric,_ComeintotheGarden,Maud_.

ThesameloveofNaturemadehiseyealertforeveryobscurestbeauty,whenheputasidehisgardeningtoolsandstarted,aswashiswont,forastrollwithsomefriendalongthegloriouscliffsofFreshwater.Thosewerefavouredfolk,who,likeMrs.ThackerayRitchie,"walkedwithTennysonalongHighDown,treadingtheturf,listeningtohistalk,whilethegullscamesideways,flashingtheirwhitebreastsagainsttheedgeofthecliff,andthePoet'scloakflappedtimetothegustsofthewestwind."ThiscloakandthePoetwerepracticallysynonymous.Itfigures--afirsteditionofit--inalltheearlysketchesofhimbySpedding,Fitzgerald,etc.(1830-40)andtothe

last,onecanhardlyimaginehimapartfromit.

Duringthesequietrambleshewaswonttodiscusswithenthusiasmthereligiousandsocialproblemsoftheday;theyweighedheavilyuponhisthoughtfulmind.Hisphilosophywasahopefulone,rootedinChristianbelief,yetconstantlyover-shadowedbyfugitivemisgivingsandbyasenseoftheimpermanenceofhumanexistence.Andwhilevoicingthesemisgivingsinlineswhichmightgivepausetoweakerminds,heneverlosthisfirmfaithinright,induty,andinultimaterectificationofallapparentwrong.
