2020 JULY A DAY FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTION It may always be said that we live in interesting times. Perhaps some times are more “interesting” than others. As a community and nation we continue to navigate the uncertain landscape of COVID-19. Civil unrest and discord dominate the headlines and a major political election is on the near horizon. Certain moments call for us, as a community of faiths, to come together to share in that practice which bonds us most closely to one another and to God. This seems such a moment. The practice is prayer. The Department of Spiritual Arts invites all residents and Artists of Arbor Acres to participate in an event we have designated “Arbor Acres Together – A Day for Prayer and Reflection.” The idea is a simple one. On July 3 rd you are encouraged, throughout the day, as you go about your tasks and activities, to reflect and to offer prayers for whatever may rest on our heart. To commemorate and support the intention of that day, the Department will offer a recorded prayer service on Channel 1390, to be shown at 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. We invite you to set aside time to view one of the services but, more importantly, to join as a community on that day in reaching up to God and thereby reaching out to our world. Every individual prayer is powerful and transformative. The joined prayers of many unite us and offer our strongest statement of solidarity. So, on July 3 rd , let us be: Arbor Acres Together!

JULY

A DAY FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTIONIt may always be said that we live in interesting times.

On July 3rd you are

encouraged, throughout the day, as you go about your tasks and activities, to reflect and to offer prayers for whatever may rest on our heart.

So, on July 3rd, let us be: Arbor Acres Together!

Welcome Newcomers!

Starting from the commercial building in our housing development called “College Village,” my wife, Charlotte, and I decided to live in Winston-Salem while I practiced office pediatrics with admitting privileges to both of the hospitals in town. After 23 years of practice and seven years of being on the full-time faculty of Wake Forest School of Medicine, we decided it was time for me to retire.Arbor Acres was just beginning to be constructed about that time, so we began to think that since we had no relatives nearby to take care of us in our later years, we should consider alternatives. As time went on, more and more of our friends entered the retirement home until it was the thing to do at our age. So, we put in our application to the management. As time passed, we heard nothing except that our friends were entering Arbor Acres every now and then, and we began to hear that we were not included because we were not Methodist. In fact, we realized our friends had joined Centenary Methodist Church from First

Presbyterian so they could be admitted to Arbor Acres. In all, 14 years went by before we got the call that ten units were being constructed at one time, and there were only six Methodist couples ready to move in, so non-Methodists were invited.John Wesley Circle was being built and we were shown two plans – A and B, with A being larger than B, and only the western side large enough to accommodate two A units. We were offered only a stackable washer & dryer, only ladder access to the attic and very little change to the basic plan. I wanted a small office, but I had to be satisfied with two bookshelves to designate a room. In spite of the small limitations that were imposed, that house served us well for 19 years and provided us with an ideal place to live until my wife died and it became the loneliest place in North Carolina.

In the February Lamplighter, we asked that you submit memory articles detailing your first impressions or experiences with Arbor Acres. In celebration of the 40th anniversary, we will be sharing these submissions with you on a monthly basis. Please enjoy–and please keep ‘em coming!

Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on TV 1390

These favorite musicians have performed many times in the past in Piner Hall and now during

COVID-19 restrictions, we are working with them to provide YouTube concerts we will show

on TV 1390.

Ethan Uslan – July 7

Ragtime pianist from Charlotte, Ethan Uslan will perform tonight and also offer a weekly

musical concert for us. Each week will feature a different show. Ethan gives his phone number

during the show so that you can call and leave a message to request a song for next week! Enjoy his show this evening and watch for his weekly

show time on the TV 1390 schedule.

Tom Fisch – July 14

Flat Rock folksinger Tom Fisch's style has been described as "..great acoustic music…a cross between Tony Rice, James Taylor and Guy

Clark.” Interspersed with stories and anecdotes, his concerts flow smoothly from a beloved

traditional song to one of Tom's fine originals to a favorite cover.

Sasha & Justin Poindexter – July 21

Arbor Acres favorites Sasha and Justin Poindexter in Our Band will present a concert for us to enjoy from their home in New York

City!

Patty Carver – July 28

Patty Carver will entertain us with her show 1954, Songs of Nostalgia from Connecticut! A gallon of gas was 22 cents, I Love Lucy was the most popular TV Show, and Eisenhower

was President. Hit songs included Secret Love, Hey There, Papa Loves Mambo, Cross Over the

Bridge and Young at Heart.

Join Patty Carver on a trip down memory lane with songs, trivia and Nostalgia from that

unforgettable year… 1954!

Clara & Mr. Tiffany Virtual Book ClubIn anticipation of the Reynolda House exhibit Tiffany’s Glass Painting with Color and Light (August 7 – November 29, 2020), we are offering a virtual book club, reading a 2011 national historical fiction bestseller, Clara & Mr. Tiffany, by Susan Vreeland. It is 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows. Behind the scenes in his studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll, head of his women’s division. Publicly unrecognized by Tiffany, Clara conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which he is long remembered.Clara struggles with her desire for artistic recognition and the challenges that she faces as a professional woman, which ultimately force her to protest against the company she has worked so hard to cultivate. She also yearns for love and companionship, and is devoted in different ways to five men, including Tiffany, who enforces a strict policy: he does not hire married women, and any who do marry while under his employ must resign immediately. This book can be purchased via Amazon (paperback $15.50, hard copy $23.88 price subject to change) and via Bookmarks ($17.00 paperback). If you need help in purchasing a copy, see Janice prior to July 6. We will host a Livestream discussion group from Piner Hall at 2:00 pm on July 30. We will have space for up to 10 people in Piner Hall. Please contact Janice if you would be interested in being in Piner Hall for the live discussion. Everyone else will tune into TV 1390. There is a copy of the book in the library available!

Back-to-School Supplies OutreachHelp us help our Artists’ children succeed this year in school! Please consider making a monetary donation towards the purchase supplies for Artist children. Due to COVID-19, we will not be accepting donations of supplies. Last year, we were able to provide 156 Artist students supplies. 100% of the supplies provided to the students were

financed by resident donations. Thank you! Due to COVID-19 this year, we will not gather to pack back to school supplies or to have a Back-to-School Bash with the students and Artists. Wellness Arts will pack and distribute the supplies to Artists for their children. We look forward to a time when we can once again interact with the students and their parents!Place your monetary donation in the red box at the bulletin board near the Book Nook. Make checks payable to Arbor Acres—memo Back-to-School supplies– by July 13 to allow time to order, receive and pack them before school starts.
