Cover Artist: Kathy SummerKathy Summer is a Florida resident who recently retired as an Information System Analyst from the Illinois Department of Transportation. She is thrilled to be able to pursue her life long interest in art, creating works in pastel, acrylic and watercol-or. Kathy loves living in “Paradise,” painting, dancing, playing pickleball and volunteering at her church and other non-prof-its. She is a member of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association.

“Awesome Sauce” is the musical duo of Kat Gracie and John Kiesling. “We perform some of everything,” said Kat, “as I am a little bit country and Johnny is a little bit rock & roll, and on the beach you have to be ready to play to the crowd. Favorite audience requests tend to be for The Eagles, Beatles and Janis Joplin, and we sneak in Dave Matthews, as Johnny is his #1 fan, but really it is whatever gets people going, because we love what we do, and our office is the beach, so we are living the life!” Kat began singing “as soon as I could talk, and was quickly eating, sleeping and drinking it, growing up in Detroit. When in high school, I had a teacher tell me it was time to de-cide what I wanted to do in life, and when I said singing, he replied I would never make it as I was horrible! I am the type that if you say that to me, I bend over backwards to prove you wrong. Six-teen college scholarships later, I think I won!” John is from Pennsylvania, “but has been here since 1996,” Kat explained, “liv-ing for years on Fort Myers Beach, but is now in Cape Coral with his wife and two children. He is a drummer and guitarist who has played with everybody and is one of the nicest guys ever, a great family man, and amazing person. I moved down with my husband four years ago, looked for a band, and joined a group with whom Johnny drummed, but about a year later, that fell apart. Johnny is also a terrific guitarist and suggested we form a duo and ‘Awesome Sauce’ began three years ago. The best part is we do

not have to drag a bunch of equipment around – I joke you only get paid to set up, as that is such a pain, while we entertain for free, as that is such joy.” “Awesome Sauce” plays for the past three years each Saturday at The Salty Crab from 1 to 5 p.m., the Fish House the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m., and at Del Tura off US41 in North Fort Myers the second Friday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. To book “Awesome Sauce,” visit their website AwesomeSauceBand.com or see them on Facebook at JohnnyKa-tAwesomeSauce. As for how they came up with their name, “That is kind-of funny,” laughed Kat! “When my husband and I were getting married, we learned we could choose our last name, so we thought, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Awesome Sauce,” but our families vetoed that! When Johnny and I formed the duo, I suggested it because he is such an Awesome musician and I am so goofy, everyone thinks I am on the Sauce, even though neither of us drink! Everybody loves and remem-bers it, so it works out better than good.”

Of Trolleys & TramsNew Options to Counter Beach Traffic & Parking

Anyone who has ever visited Fort Myers Beach in-season knows that the search for a parking space can put a dent in your trip to Paradise, and if you locate one, you’ll pay dearly for the privilege! Lee Tran, however, offers two options to help transport you conveniently and inexpensively around the island. LeeTran opened the Beach Park & Ride in mid-December 2017 in South Fort Myers at 11101 Summerlin Square Drive, near Summerlin and Pine Ridge Roads. Beach trolleys from there to the beach oper-ate daily with the exception of major holidays

from roughly 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and in season until 10 p.m. The station is at a prime location, where seasonal traffic to Fort Myers Beach often backs up, enabling it to entice visitors to take the trolley as a legitimate option. It serves three primary routes: 1.) Trolleys #490 to Fort Myers Beach, connect-ing to #410 down to Lovers Key, 2.) #130 to the Edison Mall, and 3.) #50, to Southwest Florida International Airport. Kiosks let you know the estimated time of arrival for each, electronically as well as verbally in English and Spanish. The station has three areas to shel-ter patrons from the sun and rain, with water fountains, soft drink machine, restrooms, four outdoor workstations, 16 charging units for cells and tablets, 12 electric outlets, a 125-car free parking lot and security cameras, with everything ADA-accessible including the trol-leys, all for a 75-cent fare! ($2/all day) Exact change needed. Trolleys can transport bicy-cles on their front racks. High-profile stops include Bowditch Point Park, Lynn Hall Park, Times Square, Beach Library, Santini Marina Plaza and Lov-ers Key State Park. The trolley is clean, and its big, wide windows offer a panoramic view, especially when facing the beach and Gulf. The on-board monitor constantly updates the

time as well as the next stop, intersection and upcoming landmarks. The RIDE LEETRAN app lets us-ers find the nearest stop and track buses. Available for iPhones and Android phones. Sometime in February, LeeTran plans to initiate two free step-on Trams to service the prime visitor section of Fort My-ers Beach. Trams will begin at Bowditch Point Park at the northern tip of Fort Myers Beach, pass Lynn Hall Park and Times Square and head south down Estero, before turning around near Matanzas Pass Preserve and the Beach Library. Trams will connect with the Beach Park & Ride Trolleys at Times Square and Lovers Key trolley service at Matanzas Pass Preserve, with 22 beach access stops on their routes. The open-air trams will be free to ride, rather than the 75-cent trolley charge. The two trams will replace two existing trol-leys, while offering triple the seating due to their open nature over the enclosed trolleys, with two employees on each tram to ensure passenger safety. For more information, schedules, or to purchase trolley multiple day passes, call 533-8726 (LEE-TRAN) or see www.rideleetran.com.

Fort Myers Beach is world-renowned for its pris-tine white sand beaches and breath-taking sunsets, but our barrier island is also a magnificent natural treasure in its own right, and home to five different weekly or monthly free nature walks! One of these is “Life in The Mangroves” at Matan-zas Pass Preserve every Thursday through spring from 9:30 to 11 a.m. This inspirational walk through one of Flor-ida’s original preserves examines the diverse plant and animal communities in this maritime oak hammock, transi-tional wetland and mangrove forest ecosystem at 199 Bay Road, with limited free parking, just down the road from the Fort Myers Beach Public Library. Recently we viewed White Indigo plants; Cabbage and Sabal Palms; red, white and black mangroves, several species of air plants, and a vast variety of flora & fauna on our one-mile entertaining and educational adventure through this gorgeous 60-acre natural preserve with a four-mile boardwalk trail. Jim Rod-well, a Florida master naturalist and long-time Fort Myers Beach nature expert, is the endlessly-fascinating guide, combining his incredible knowledge and droll sense-of-hu-mor that makes the 90-minute program fly by! The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve also host the free monthly “By The Light of The Moon” Full Moon Walks. This experiential hands-on program offers a unique opportunity for participants to awaken and sharpen their senses of smell, touch, hearing and night vision. Fort Myers Beach is well into the time of year when the island’s winter snowbirds have settled in for some well-de-served warm weather. Not to be confused with our human snowbirds, I mean one of the island’s wintering songbird resi-dents! The Nonbreeding Yellow Palm Warbler has paler yellow undertails and a dull brown crown, the plumage visible while warblers stay in Florida. Another way to identify the palm war-bler is its near-constant tail-wagging. Yellow palm warbler tails are constantly in motion up-down-up-down as they hop from place to place. They mainly forage on open ground or in low vege-tation, rather than in the forest canopy as do many other war-bler species. Good job being different, you silly warbler! Yellow palm warblers still sing from high perches in trees and shrubs, like other warblers. The palm warbler’s diet is mostly insects, including ants, grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, aphids, flies, bees and spiders. They eat most insects off the ground

or on low shrubs, but can pull off some nice acrobatic moves to eat bugs in midair. Palm warblers will consume seeds and berries when available. Although the Palm Warbler’s name brings images of it constantly living in the tropics, they actually have the second most northern breeding grounds of all warblers, in Canada’s boreal forests, often called “North America’s bird nursery.” These expansive forests are the summer getaway to billions of migratory birds and approximately 98% of all palm warblers. The name Palm Warbler comes from J. P. Gmelin, after the specimen collected from the Caribbean Island Hispaniola that is well known for its palm trees. The Yellow Palm Warbler is the eastern subspecies of palm warbler, as there are two subspe-cies that migrate along different routes. The Yellow Palm Warbler begins its journey earli-er and travels east of the Appalachian Mountains, while the Western Palm Warbler migrates through the Mississippi Valley. The final destination of these birds is Florida and the Caribbe-an Islands. Yellow Palm Warblers start moving north in early April, and Western Palm Warblers go north shortly thereafter. During migration and winter, palm warblers use regions that have large grassy areas with scattered trees and shrubs to find shelter and food; for example forest edges and fence rows. During their migrations, palm warblers are one of the most frequently killed species at lighted towers across the United States. A TV tower in Florida caused more than 1,800 palm warbler deaths during a 25-year period. If you live outside of Florida and are curious about how to create livable habitat for these songbirds so they will make a pit stop at your house to refuel during their great migra-tion, or to create a winter vacation home for these feathered friends here, visit the National Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife™ website. They have many helpful tips to make your yard a great place for birds!

Nettie Price, the Fort Myers Beach Public Library’s February Artist of the Month, is not only an artist innovator, but also a business visionary! “I have been painting since I was a baby, attaining a fine arts degree, but also a bio-science degree and Masters in Education, so I was a science teacher

for seven years. One day, we had a horrible snowstorm and only one student made it to class, so I painted him as a cute little animal with funny glasses in a tiny four-by-four-inch painting I sold on EBay and my website, and that was my break to do artwork fulltime in 2012. God gives you the talent; it’s up to us to best

use it.” Nettie describes her style as “whimsical, vibrant, and fun. People say my artwork is perfect for children or kid’s rooms, but my pieces are ideal for any part of the home or office or anywhere you need a smile on your face!” A primary focus is animals, particularly dogs. “I painted animals my whole life, and am so proud the Humane Society licensed my image of ‘3 Dog Love’ to raise funds, having it on 500,000 tote bags, bringing in so far over a half-million dollars.” Another important component is nature, particularly the beach. “I love the beach and everything about it. Even though I live in Reading, Pennsylvania, my heart resides in Florida, so I have the Sparkling Art Mobile to travel around the state for my shows.” The Sparkling Art Mobile is a 25-foot van Nettie “bought from my local bread company and repainted into a movable art gallery. I call it ‘SAM’ for short, using its initials, and park it at my appearances for people to tour.” Another innovation are Sparkling Art Machines. “I reuse old cigarette vending machines I turn into pieces of art to sell my merchandise, and would love to see them catch on all over the country.” In addition to Nettie’s 35-piece Library show, you can experience her art at two other venues. “I host a series of painting parties at the Salty Dog Gallery & Gifts at 1901 Estero Boulevard, #103, from Friday, February 9, to Sunday, February 11. The next weekend, I am at Bailey’s Store on Sanibel from Friday the 16th through Sunday the 18th.” “Sparkling” is closely associated with Nettie “because I put sparkles on everything I paint! My slogan is ‘Sparkling art for the young-at-heart!’”

See Nettie’s display at the Fort Myers Beach Public Library’s 3rd Floor Exhibit Area throughout February, including the “Meet the Artist” reception on Tuesday, February 6, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Library is at 2755 Estero Boulevard; with hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Sundays and holidays, including Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 19. For information, see www.fmb.lib.fl.us or call 239-765-8162. To contact Nettie, view her webpage at www.nettieprice.com or email at [email protected].

GENERAL COMMENTS:Okay, now that the new car smell of the new year has worn off we can get down to some serious predicting. By now your resolutions have gone with the holiday leftovers. We’re digging into the new year, so here goes: You know how in all my disclaimers I tell you how I’m not an astrologer, and that I just make this all up just to amuse you? I say it all the time. And it’s the truth! But. There’s that word ’amuse’ that slips in there, like salt and pepper on the dining room table you hardly notice it’s there. Back in the 15th century ‘amuse’ meant “to divert the attention, beguile, delude.” So then, a muse is someone who serves as an inspiration to others. So saying, here - let me amuse you.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)We have become digital social butterflies. Nothing wrong with that. Ev-eryone loves butterflies, being social, and we’ve all got hookups to the internet. Look at your FB page. Who knew you had so many friends? You see the actual number of friends you have, plus you can go look at their pictures any time you want! Back in the day of 3-dimensional friends you had to go to their house and have dinner in order to see the same pictures. This doesn’t sound too bad, so you’ll go retro and get out more often.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) This is a good month for you to stare off into space and try to de-termine how far away things are. This is especially good to do while you’re driving, but this is more along the lines of looking at stars and planets. If you use your star map app at the same time as you look into space anyone watching you will be intrigued. Who is this mysterious person studying the stars? This can work to your advantage big time. Use it sparingly.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)Electronic impulses will be hitting you on occasion - probably flying in from the left at around 9 o’clock. But who cares, right? Maybe you’ll go, “What the?” Or maybe you’ll just barely notice it. It has about that much effect on you. So, why do I bring this up? Glad you asked. I had to spice up your horoscope this month because it’s February, and noth-ing much happens in February. They barely had enough days to make it a month. Anyway, have a nice month. That’s it. Right? Kinda boring.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)As the Bull you know that you’re really the one in charge of Valentine’s Day. Yeah, others try to do their thing but you’re the Bull. You’ll do it right! Of course that let’s me off the hook (not being a Taurus) and let’s the rest of us do our fumbling best. But, no! It’s you Taurus who will pave the way to love and valentines! … Was that too much? It was, was’t it? Well, you’re the romantic, so be romantic! What can I say? It’s in the stars!

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21)Infatuation is a strange word to come up in your horoscope this month. My inner muse (who sometimes looks like a sexy bunny rabbit) brought it up, but out of context. Before I could find clarity she was lost in a maze of words and I was left on my own. Such is the life of a solitary pseudo-astronomer. Anyway, to me this means that this month you shouldn’t become infatuated with anything, especially the word infatuate. You’re more curious than infatuated.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)You’ll want to play cards this month. Because cards generate hands, and hands have fingers - 8, if you don’t count thumbs. But thumbs make us homo sapiens, and homo sapiens know what to do with fin-gers - you use them to pour whiskey, of course. See where I’m going with this? Predictions are totally malleable. You can take them any-where you want. All it takes is a deck of cards. You have a deck of cards, don’t you?

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG. 22) Anytime the subject of fruit can be introduced into the conversation this month is going to result in hilarious outcomes. It doesn’t have to be be any particular fruit at all, but it might be best if you keep to local fruits so you don’t confuse the un-enlightened. It’s a known psychological fact that you can gain insight into the mind of the individual by his use of fruit in everyday conversation. But not everyone can do it, so don’t worry if you can’t. Just use vegetables instead.

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEPT 22)You know what? I’m a Virgo too, so I’m gonna buck up and give it to you straight. No tip-toe-ing around. Here it is, straight out of the muse’s mind to my digital mouth. This month you’ll take a step to the left and end up in another multiverse. This one will be populated by little blue unicorns with pinkish horns. No wait. That’s the little guy in Happy! What a funny tv show. I fell asleep watching it, and now I can’t get that crazy character out of my head. Never mind. False alarm. I’ll get back to you next month.

LIBRA (SEPT 23 - OCT 23)A great month to wander around aimlessly, no particular destination in mind, just looking for outcomes and adventures … Yeah, that doesn’t sounds like a Libra, does it? I didn’t think so either. And therein lies your real horoscope: Just because someone says it’s your horoscope doesn’t mean it really is, right? Best to compare it to other horoscopes out there and see what floats to the top. Yeah, that sounds more like you! So, this is just a part of your horoscope. You’ll take care of the rest.

SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 21)How many of you Scorpios have ever actually touched a scorpion? Yikes! Not exactly a comforting thought. I mean, how do you touch a scorpion? Well, for one, carefully. Kind of like how you like to be ap-proached, right? Carefully. So, maybe there is a reason for you to be born under this sign, because of your similarities with a scorpion. By raise of hands, how many of you Scorpios have a tattoo of a scorpion on your body? See what I’m saying?

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)Throw open the doors and windows! Let the sun shine in, and those delightful breezes ruffle the curtains. Listen to the many calls of the native birds singing their sweet songs. Hey, anyone notice there’s no insects around? This is your internal universe this month. What is com-monly referred to by some as delusion is to you a possible reality, at least in increments. Like, it’s sunny out. Or, nice bird sounds. Like, right now. You’ve got a month to piece it together - go for it!

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)Sun rise. Sun set. Moon rise. Moon set. By now most of us know that these astral bodies have their own orbits, and we’re just spin-ning through the galaxy at an ungodly speed. Much like some drivers I know driving around here. Not to get sidetracked, but what about this thing called gravity? I mean, it’s great if we’re just spinning around the sun, but then what about the pull of the moon. Or the centrifugal force the galaxy asserts against our trip around the galaxy? I mean, who thinks about these things?

DISCLAIMER: Blah-blah-blah. Blah-blah-blah. Nobody reads the disclaimer. You can say anything you want in a disclaimer. It’s your Get Out of Jail Free pass. I’m not an astrologer. Just a guy with a vivid imagination. Take a look at Cancer’s writeup. That’s me - a deck of cards. The rest is up to your imagination. That’s the beauty of it! You control your own destiny. And, thank you, if in your imagination you think I have a clue. That’s what I imagine too. Aren’t imaginations great?
