B. Job Training Activities
The writer’s purpose for doing the job training in CV Explore Solo was to
increase the writer’s knowledge about tour planner function in tourism business
industry especially in tour operator. The job training started officially from March
2nd
, 2015 to April 2nd
, 2015. The job training was extended until May 12th
, 2015 due
to the late process of making the final assignment with the writer’s job training mate.
During the job training in Customize Tour Division of Explore Solo, the writer not
only did the activities related to Tourism field but also did some activities related to
English competency such as translating the description of Explore Solo’s trip
destinations. The writer started the activities from 10.00 A.M to 05.00 P.M. The
writer’s job training hours in Explore Solo was from Monday to Friday.
On the first day of the job training, the writer got a piece of note from
Muhammad Yusuf, the writer’s job training supervisor, saying what should be done
by the writer for a month (March 2th
, 2015 - April 2th
, 2015). For the first week, the
writer should make brief descriptions of places to visit from Explore Solo packages.
In the second week, the writer should translate those brief descriptions from
Indonesian into English. The next week, the writer should determine destination for
his own final project together with his job training mate and should do location
survey to the destination for the final project. From the third week to the fifth week,
the writer along with his job training mate began to work as a team. Then in the
22
fourth week, the writer should construct the itinerary. And in the last week, the writer
should present his own final project in the form of power point and finished it up in
form of CD and book.
From the first week to the second week, the writer should understand and the
several itinerary of Explore Solo packages. The writer was given 10 destination
packages from CV Explore Solo. These destination packages are Explore Solo,
Explore Jogja, Explore Magelang, Explore Dieng, Explore Karimunjawa, Explore
Pacitan, Explore Baluran, Explore Bromo, Explore Meru Betiri and Explore Ijen.
Each destination package has a tour itinerary and those itineraries contains places to
visit. For the example destination package of Explore Baluran, it has Baluran
National Park, Bama Beach, Bekol Savanna, Manting Water Spring as places to visit.
The writer had to make brief description about Baluran, Baluran National Park,
Bama Beach, Bekol Savanna and Manting Water Spring by searching the data of
each place from internet or other sources. This activity had to be done to make the
writer as a tour planner be able to arrange itinerary that contains all important
information about the destinations.
In the third week, the writer had to translate those 10 packages from
Indonesian to English. The purpose of this activity is to allow the writer to apply the
English language skills.
In the fourth week, the writer with his teammate had to prepare and determine
the destination as an object for final project of the job training. We decided to choose
23
Kebumen City as a place for the final project. The result of field survey did not meet
the expectations such as rough access, closed places and time consuming to reach the
places. Because Kebumen did not meet the requirement, the writer with his teammate
made a new selection for destination. Kulon Progo was then chosen to be the new
option. The survey in Kulon Progo was conducted after 2-week preparation. Based
on the field survey, all of the tourism aspects on Kulon Progo were promising.
In the seventh to eighth week, the writer had to compose itinerary of Kulon
Progo. Firstly the writer should make brief description of 6 places that are included
in the itinerary of Kulon Progo. The places were Sermo Reservoir, Kalibiru, Glagah
Beach, Suroloyo Peak, Nglingo Tea Plantation and Sidoharjo Waterfall. In the ninth
week, the writer should make that description and itinerary in form of Power Point in
order to be displayed for presentation.
On May 4th
, 2015 the writer and his teammate presented the power point of
Kulon Progo final project in front of all staffs of Explore Solo. Then a week later, the
writer together with his teammate should make CDs and books containing the
material from that power point with the title: Kulon Progo: Menoreh Foothill’s
Fancy.

C. Job Training Results
During the job training in Customize Tour Division of Explore Solo, the writer
could improve his ability and knowledge of process the making of a tour itinerary
and could learn as a tour planner related to tourism industry. The writer has
successfully finished some duties, such as:
1. Making description of destinations from Explore Solo packages
The first lesson to be a good tour planner is able to understand the destinations
that are used as tour package. A good tour planner should be able to explain all
of the destinations in the tour package that has been made by the tour planner.
The aim of this activity is to give understanding and guidance to the writer
before he makes the tour itinerary.
The writer succeeded to collect the detail information about the destination of 10
Explore Solo packages. The writer got those information from the internet.
These are the list of the packages:
a. Explore Solo Package: Candi Cetho, Kebun Teh Kemuning, Candi Sukuh,
Wayang Orang Sriwedari, Pasar Antik Triwindu, Kampung Batik Laweyan,

2. Translating the description of destinations from Explore Solo packages. The
result of the activity above is then translated into English. The purpose of this
activity is to implement what the writer has gotten from the college. The
following pictures show the example of Explore Bromo Package translation
made by the writer,

30
Picture 3.7 Screenshot of Mount Bromo Description

31
Picture 3.9 Screenshot of Tanggulangin Leather Craft Center Description
There are several important things from this activity that are related to the
translation subject that the writer has gotten in campus such as the writer
always writes the words in the original language in Italic because those words
cannot be translated into English (e.g. entas-entas, tugel kuncung, barikan).
Furthermore, translating should use effective sentences and appropriate
context, for example, “Orang-orang zaman dahulu menyebutnya sebagai
Gunung Brahma, translated into “In the early time, people called it Brahma
Mountain, not “People in the past call it Mount Bromo”. The last is that the
writer should be careful in choosing tense because the text contains fact
together with history, for example, “This high waterfall called everlasting
waterfall because it never stop pouring water. Madakaripura waterfall is
believed to be the final meditation place of Patih Gajah Mada from Majapahit
Kingdom”.

3. Making itinerary of Kulon Progo
The function of an itinerary in a tour package is very important. Itinerary is a
day-by-day schedule of specific tour package/program that contains the
details of destinations, event activities, time for each activities and also other
additional information related to the tour. Itinerary makes tour program run
clearly and smoothly. The following is an example of an itinerary that was
made by the writer during the job training in Explore Solo. The writer will
explain about usability of itinerary in tour package.
Picture 3.2 Screenshot of Day 1 Itinerary from Kulon Progo Power Point
33
From the picture on the previous page, the writer wrote itinerary of Day 1
with the sequentially start from Adi Sucipto Airport, Sermo Reservoir,
Kalibiru, Glagah Beach and the last is Samigaluh. The writer explained the
arrival and departure time, the distance between places, important and unique
description about the places, attractions and activities available in each place.
From that itinerary, people could estimate, visualize and know the plot about
their tour in Kulon Progo. In creating good result of work, a company should
be innovative and creative. Tour package is very essential and important for
Explore Solo because Explore Solo is a company which runs in tourism
industry business. Explore Solo is aware to do any tour budgeting and
customize tour function to create good tour itinerary in the public especially
for its customers. The ways used by Explore Solo to create its tour itinerary
are taught to the writer during the job training. The following points show the
writer’s process of making an itinerary in CV. Explore Solo:
1. Pre-Project Survey
a. Finding Deep Information of Determined Place Through Internet and
Other Resources
After Kulon Progo had been determined as a potential destination
place, the writer then searched the important information about the
place. This step needs to be done first to get deeper information about
34
the determined place before making an itinerary. The writer searched
for notable information such as the detail location of Kulon Progo, the
width of Kulon Progo area, well-known tourism objects in Kulon
Progo, unique things about Kulon Progo and also brief history of
Kulon Progo. The following picture shows the description of Kulon
Progo that is made by the writer.
Picture 3.3 Screenshot of Kulon Progo description
After getting all of the important information about the destination
place, the writer searched the interesting and potential tourism sites
around the determined place. The writer categorized the types of
35
tourism sites in order to make the tour impressing. Then the writer
sorted the beach tourism object, nature scenery tourism object, hills
tourism object, plantation tourism object, etc. The determined tourism
site in Kulon Progo are Sermo Reservoir (water tourism object),
Kalibiru (outbond and nature scenery tourism object), Glagah Beach
(beach tourism object), Suroloyo Peak (hills and nature scenery
tourism object), Nglingo Tea Plantation (plantation tourism object),
Sidoharjo Waterfall (water tourism object). After that the writer
searched important information about determined tourism sites. After
getting information about the tourism sites, the writer put the list of
tourism sites in the right order that are suitable with the category of
tourism objects. This step can be changed depending on the field
survey.
b. Establishing starting point & finishing point place
Starting point and finishing point is a benchmark used for the crew of
Explore Solo and the customers who follow the tour to gather to begin
the tour and also to end the tour. Starting point and finishing point
should be a public place that is easy to find such as the airport, railway
station and bus terminal. Then the writer decided to choose Adi
Sucipto International Airport as the starting point and finishing point.
36
c. Determining plot for itinerary
The itinerary was made after all these steps implemented. However,
determining plots for destination must be done before doing project
survey. The function of this step is to make the design and illustration
of the itinerary before mapping. The determined route in the itinerary
should be genuinely implemented because the writer and his teammate
can ascertain the tourism object that is suitable with time,
circumstances and objectives. For example, Glagah Beach is suitable
for sunset, so that the writer and his teammate have to be at the
Glagah Beach at afternoon before sunset.
The following picture shows the plot of Kulon Progo itinerary that is
made by the writer,
37
Picture 3.4 Screenshot of plot for itinerary day 1
38
Picture 3.5 Screenshot of plot for itinerary day 2
d. Mapping
Before doing project survey, the writer set a travel route according to
the sequence of tourism object in the itinerary. Based on the data from
the
39
internet and other resources, the writer created the easiest and fastest
way from one place to other places in sequence.
The following picture shows the route for project survey. The tour
began from Adi Sucipto International airport as starting point and
finishing point that is shown by the picture below at the star symbol, 1
is Sermo Reservoir, 2 is Kalibiru, 3 is Glagah Beach, 4 is Suroloyo
Peak, 5 is Nglingo Tea Plantation and 6 is for Sidoharjo Waterfall.

2. Project Survey
After getting all the data, the writer with his teammate summarized and
filtered the information to make it as valid information as a provision
before doing project survey to Kulon Progo. Then they did project survey
in order to get direct and deeper information on the destination place and
also tourism sites. The steps were as follows:
a. Noting Important Location
The writer noted gas station, mosque, hospital, hotel/inn, restaurant,
souvenir shop, monument and also notable place along the way
through to tourism sites. This step needs to be done so that the writer
could explain where the place and how far the place is if there are any
urgent conditions or the tourists want to find something from that
public place.
b. Making Time Estimation and Distance Approximation
Time and distance are important to be planned. The writer made time
estimation based on the schedule of the itinerary. The writer ensured
that the schedule runs according to the plan then noted the time
needed from one tourism object to another places.
c. Collecting Data
The data would be more accurate when it is collected directly from a
trustworthy source. The writer collected data by asking the people
41
who live around the tourism object or the organizer of every tourism
objects. The collected data such as history of the tourism object, the
legend of that place, price of the ticket, facilitation, the inn around the
object, and the traditional food or snacks should be deeply obtained.
4. Finishing books and CDs
In making books and CDs, the writer worked the CDs, while his teammate
worked the books. The writer and his teammate were one group in making
final project. The writer learnt as a tour planner in his duty tour itinerary
maker, while his teammate learnt as a display design and content in his duty
as photo editor, book layout editor and book design editor. The writer copied
his power point file of Kulon Progo to the CD. The CD contents 48-slide

Progo. Page 2 contains brief and notable description of Kulon Progo region in

D. The Problems of Making an Itinerary Tour and Their Solution
In making an itinerary, surely, there are problems faced by the writer. The
problems that the writer faced during making an itinerary are explained below.
1. Lack of experience in finding a region with its tourism objects
On the fourth week of job training, the writer found difficulty in finding a
region or regency for final project. The expected area or region should be
43
potential place that have distinctive tourism objects. The main problem faced by
the writer’s is lack of experience in exploring tourism objects in Java Island and
its surrounding. Furthermore, the writer’s lack experience in national region
tourism field also contributes to create problem to find a region with its tourism
objects. Therefore the writer need more time to determine region and its
preparation for final project that should be finished before fourth week.
In solving the problem, the writer asked the job training supervisor. He
suggested to explore potential tourism area in southeast part of Central Java. The
writer maximized the use of internet to know more about the region in southeast
part of Central Java. Finally, the writer found Pranji Hill, Van Der Wijk Fortress,
Ayah/Logending Beach, Padegolan Rafting and Jemur Adventure Park that were
located in Kebumen Regency.
2. Difficulty in preparing and obtaining project survey
The other problem in making an itinerary for final project was preparing
and obtaining project survey. The late process of implementing final project that
took several weeks was mainly caused by this problem. There were complex
process faced by the writer in preparing project survey and also several problems
faced by the writer in obtaining project survey. The writer should conduct
project survey that is new for the writer, so that the writer finds difficulty. The
failure of project survey in Kebumen shows the difficulty in preparing and
44
obtaining project survey. Steps of pre-project survey that were not well-arranged
and lack mastership about Kebumen and its tourism objects led the failure.
As the job training supervisor suggests, the writer should practice more
the skills as tour planner to solve the problem above. The writer should more
focus on structuring and memorizing steps, maximizing the use of the
technology and also bringing out the creativity in order to solve any obstacle in
project survey.
Finally, Kulon Progo was then chosen to be final destination for job
training final project report. The writer truly did his work as a tour planner. The
writer tried to be serious and detail in every process of making an itinerary of
Kulon Progo.
45
