February 2010

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS GIVING!

We are ever grateful to all who have contributed to the ministries and mission of our church in what was a challenging financial year for many of us. In response to last year’s steep drop in investment income and a shortfall in pledge income, many of you responded by making a 53rd week or 13th month contribution. Our Senior Pastor volunteered to take a month of unpaid leave last August. Our committees and staff have worked diligently to stay within a dramatically reduced budget established last March. It is with deepest appreciation that we thank everyone who is committed to the ongoing work of The Congregational Church of Brookfield.

Even though we’re in a new calendar year, we are still moving toward the end of our church’s fiscal year. March 28th is the last Sunday that the offering – and pledged contributions – will count toward this fiscal year. The end of March each year is when we assess where we are and determine how we move into the next fiscal year. For wherever we end one year – surplus, deficit or flat – is where we start the next. Any balance of income carries forward and affects – either positively or negatively – the new budget we must establish for 2010-11.

Through your generous financial support, we provide worship services, weekly Sunday school classes, music programs, youth group programs, mission trips, adult study classes, Stephen Ministry, Serendippers and much more that affects – and even changes – lives. Thanks to your faithful giving and ongoing commitment to our church, we are able to not only do ministry right here in Brookfield but reach out beyond our walls to touch many others.

If you have not yet completed your pledged donation, please remember March 28th is the last Sunday to contribute to this year’s budget.

THANK YOU, Audrey Himebaugh, Moderator

MEETING OF CHURCH COUNCIL – January 12, 2010 In an effort to keep the congregation better informed as to actions taken or being considered by the

Church Council, we will be including a summary of significant actions in the monthly CrossWays.

Treasurer’s Report: We are still running about $17,000 behind on pledge income, but our expenses continue to run under budget. Our overall income is down about $3,000 because of our investment income distribution. Currently our income over expenses is about $4,000. Fair Funds are ready to be disbursed: $4,358.51 to Christian Growth and Enrichment, $4,358.50 to CCB projects. Committees are encouraged to submit requests for the projects portion. The other half of the Fair Funds ($8,717.02) will be disbursed to the beneficiaries of our outreach choices. Also discussed was the insurance payment that had been made after the fire in the cottage. We have $8,991.19 left over after repairs were made (savings due to donated materials and labor). After discussion, Council approved moving one half of the money to Buildings and Grounds Fund, the other half to Our Church’s Wider Mission. Other updates: the Book of Remembrance had $12,304.29 as of 12/31/09, of which $4,500 has since been withdrawn for the purchase of the AED and the 5-year plan.

Investment Treasurer: reported that CCB should be receiving about $29,000 from interest on our investments. At this point it looks like the General Endowment is up $131,000, and the total endowment funds are up $154,000.

Online Giving Update: Audrey is working with Vanco on getting the system online for us. Look for updates in regard to online giving this calendar year.

Committee Communications:

Worship: Discussion within Worship committee and Council on Christmas Eve services: There were suggestions about shortening the hymns, tracking the 8 pm worship attendance, working to give different services different personalities but not changing the basic makeup of the services. After much discussion it was decided that we would keep the service times as is (5, 8, 11 pm) for this coming Christmas Eve and look at the service to tighten/shorten things where possible.

Deacons: At the December Deacons Meeting a few membership changes were voted on: 3 members requested to move from Active to Associate; 5 were removed per their request; 7 were removed because they moved and left no forwarding address.

Church in Society: will be holding a food drive beginning January 24th and wrap up on Valentine’s Day. The food pantry is running low in town. Some specific items requested are: toilet paper, canned chili, stew, spam, canned fruits, juices and cleaning supplies.

Church House: The water heater in Fellowship Hall is in the process of being replaced. It is under warranty, so there should only be a small labor fee. The AED is in place in the hall outside the main office. A draft of the emergency response plan has been created, and Dave Goral will be calling a meeting of the Safety Task Force. You are always welcome to attend and observe the Council meetings. To be added to the agenda of the

monthly meeting, please contact Audrey Himebaugh or Les Slater.

Stewardship Campaign 2010

Myth Busters- Super Steward to the Rescue!

Kick off Sunday – January 31st

From cradle to grave, our lives are really about receiving and giving – receiving the many blessings of our lives and deciding how to give back to our church, community, and world.

Join us during worship to see how our “Super Steward” will bust some myths about giving, help us understand our feelings about stewardship, and encourage us to grow a little toward being our own super steward.

Our church council has done its best to hold down expenses and maximize our stewardship dollars with our proposed budget. Our total proposed operating budget is $423,130, with a needed pledge income of $331,010.

Please, this year, consider making a “leap of faith” and increase your pledge giving for 2010/11. Even a very small increase in your weekly giving could make a HUGE difference in our ability to reach people through our ministries.

Together, we can meet the challenges of our time— Reach our goals faster than a speeding bullet,

Have faith more powerful than a locomotive, Be able to leap tall buildings of doubt in a single bound!

Great Scott, it’s Super Steward - in all of us!

Are you interested in learning more about, or joining our church?

UCC Reaches Out to Haiti with Emergency Aid after Earthquake

Thank you for your continued giving to our national denomination’s Haiti Earthquake Relief fund Did you know that dollars that you put in the plate right here in Brookfield last spring, in our annual One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering, were on their way to Haiti (through electronic fund transfer) almost before the shaking stopped on Tuesday, January 12?

Immediately after the disastrous 7.0 earthquake hit, Global Ministries staff from our national United Church of Christ offices in Cleveland – who work in full-time outreach ministry funded by our giving to Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM) – were immediately checking on our mission partners. Since then, your generosity has made it possible for the Congregational Church of Brookfield to contribute more than $900 so far.

Leaders from our CT Conference in Hartford have written to thank us and to answer some “frequently asked questions”:

First, 100% of any gifts noted for “Haiti” are sent directly to aid people in need. Office over-head has already been covered by your generous gifts to OCWM. Earthquake Relief funds are already at work in basic humanitarian relief: temporary shelter, food, and health assistance. The next days will see attention to water and sanitation issues. Much of this work is done through Church World Service, our partner in disaster response and international development. As of January 25, the UCC had received $500,000, with new gifts received daily. The UCC Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund does qualify for corporate matching gift programs. The UCC’s tax ID number is 34-1927041.

Congregations wanting to collect relief supplies should assemble and forward Church World Service Baby and Hygiene Kits, as these can be transported to the affected area, where clothing and food cannot. Volunteer opportunities immediately after a large-scale disaster of this kind are rare, even for medical personnel. Disaster Response personnel have begun initial conversations with partners in Haiti about possibilities for the future; as that information becomes available, it will be online at http://www.ucc.org/disaster/

Thank you for your compassion and support. Here’s how you can continue to help: 1. Pray for the people of Haiti, their leaders, and the emergency and humanitarian aid

workers.

2. Write a check, payable to CCB and marked “Haitian Relief" on the memo line. We will send checks each week from our church to the Missionary Society of CT office in Hartford, and it will be immediately sent through our national UCC offices to

those who need it in Haiti.

Breaking News from our Mission Partners in Haiti: You are invited to hear our National Staff

OCWM representative, Susan Sanders, give us the very latest updates about UCC relief efforts

in Haiti. She will speak at the First Congregational Church of Darien: Saturday, Feb. 6th,

1:00-3:00pm, sharing news from UCC mission partners on the ground in Haiti.

Yankee Fair and Barn Sale treasurers report final net proceeds from our 2009 fair of $17,434.03 !!

Congratulations and thank-you to all who contributed to making the day a wonderful

celebration of fellowship and fun.

Proceeds from each year’s fair are allocated as follows:

• 50% of proceeds go to outreach. Recipients of each year’s outreach proceeds are determined by our Church in Society Committee. Proceeds from this year of $8,717.02 will be disbursed to:

Brookfield Education Foundation

Brookfield Social Services – Back to School programs

WeCAHR – Western CT Association for Human Rights

Literacy Volunteers on the Green – New Milford

• 25% of proceeds go into our Christian Growth and Enrichment Fund. $4,358.51 will be added to the fund this year, which is used to help offset tuition or fees for members who may be attending conferences, educational seminars or pro-grams throughout the year. Requests for use of these funds are submitted to, and approved by, the Church Council.

• The remaining 25% of proceeds are used for projects or needs within our church.

Any individual or committee may submit a request to Church Council for funds from here to meet such a need. Final approval for use of these funds is by congregational vote.

Requests for funds from the $4,358.50 Church Projects portion of the 2009 Yankee Fair proceeds are due by April 1st. Requests may be handed into the Church Office or submitted to Moderator, Audrey Himebaugh, or Vice Moderator, Les Slater. A summary of all the requests and a recommendation from the Church Council will be presented to the congregation for approval at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 25th.

From the Church and Society Committee . . . The Salvation Army kettle travelled among the churches of Brookfield during the Christmas season and collected a total of $16,653.76 which included one donation of $10,000. CCB contributed $335.

Miriam’s Kitchen Todd, one of the Miriam’s Kitchen writing group participants, explains that “writing gives me a sense of accomplishment; poetry allows me to express my personal feelings in an abstract way. Please consider this poem, written by the writing group participants, as a small thank you for your generosity.

“Let My Words” by Neal Avery, Jr. Let my words touch you as freely as I write them

And if they do – feel them in your heart, mind and soul

I was told by my God to extend to you love and compassion

This is my action to the world – including my enemies.

Let us not forget to touch another person with grace and mindfulness

Knowing how much we need one another

For this the doors of heaven will open to us.

Our congregation recently sent 3 boxes (weighing over 70 pounds) of toiletries to Miriam’s Kitchen thanks to all the generous donations to the Giving Tree. Kierstin was thrilled when it all rolled in on the UPS hand truck. This past year, from January 1st through June 30th Miriam’s accomplished the following:

*25,259 meals were served to guests. *1,442 men and women were assisted in accessing much needed services, including mental health, medical and substance abuse services, assistance finding housing, connection to employment and help meeting other immediate needs. *589 guests participated in their daily therapeutic workshops, which include poetry, creative writing, pottery, art, current events discussions and much more.

Here are upcoming opportunities for you to participate in our outreach programs:

2nd Annual Feeding Hungry Hearts

This is the annual food drive to collect needed food/toiletries/household items for the Brookfield Social Services. They are usually inundated during the holidays and begin to run short in February. This is our chance to help restock their shelves to help those in need, especially during these tough economic times. CIS will have boxes in Brooks Hall to collect your donations. What is really needed at this time: canned stews, canned chili, Spam, canned fruit, juice, toilet tissue and household cleaning products.

Field Of Flags

Coming to a church near (really near) you next summer beginning July 16 and lasting for three weeks. If you are interested in helping out with this moving memorial to those who have fallen in service to the nation, please speak to anyone on the CIS committee.

Refugee Resettlement Ministry Update Thomas and Bassma had an enjoyable holiday season and have started a hopeful new year here in Connecticut. When they mentioned that they had always had a Christmas tree in Iraq, confirmand Emily Jacobs and her mom jumped right in to help them celebrate with a beautiful tree, Brookfield style. A New Year’s Eve trip to New York City, meals with friends and Avatar in 3-D have added lots of fun to their lives. Bassma continues to work two jobs, in the mornings as a preschool teacher at the Gingerbread School House in Bethel and afternoon and evenings at Stew Leonard’s serving coffee. She enjoys both positions, and everyone at Stew’s knows the name of the lovely young woman from Iraq. A big thank you to all the drivers who make these jobs possible. Bassma also continues to study for her driver’s license with lots of teachers, including Sue and Ashley, helping her along the way. Because Bassma has been able to cover all the Janabis’ expenses, Thomas has been able to enroll at the Community Culinary School in New Milford. This 35 hour a week, 3 month program has a 95% placement rate in the food service industry. Thomas’s tuition, $3,500, is covered by grants. The school is also an excellent English immersion opportunity for Thomas. So far he has gotten 90s on his weekly tests and appreciates the ESL help of Joe, Carol and Patty. He drives himself to school in the little red truck donated by the Bonns. The next stage in our Refugee Resettlement Ministry is one of the most challeng-ing. In early February we will begin looking for new housing for Thomas and Bassma. They will move to their own apartment this spring, but never out of our hearts and lives.

Brookfield Career Networking Group If you are in career transition or willing to help those who are, consider attending our networking group in February on the 2nd and 4th Saturday from 9:30 to 11:00am in Fellowship Hall.

Please extend this invitation to friends or neighbors who are in career transition. Bring copies of your resume and your job search questions and goals. The group is facilitated by Susan Lemke, a career professional. Please direct questions to the office.

Lenten Health and Wellness Challenge Sunday, Feb. 21

st - Saturday, April 10

th

For the past few years during the Lenten Season some of our members have taken the opportunity to participate in the Lenten Health & Wellness Challenge. The challenge helped our congregation to hold the participating members accountable for being kind to their bodies, minds, and spirits during the Lenten Season and in doing so in creating healthier habits for their whole lives.

We invite you to join us in the challenge this year – whether you have participated in the past or this is your first time. The challenge will begin on the first Sunday in Lent, February 21

st

and continue through Easter, ending on April 10th

. Those of you who choose to accept this new mission of transformation will be challenged to eat healthier, exercise, form better habits, and to spend intentional time with friends – family – yourself- and God.

The whole program will be outlined in packets that will be available beginning on the first day of Lent which is Ash Wednesday, February 17th and will continue to be available throughout the Lenten Season. We hope you will join us in trying to grow in healthy ways in body, mind, and spirit! If you are interested in accepting this mission please sign up on the bulletin board outside the main office.

If you have any questions please be in touch with Rev. Jennifer Whipple at 203-775-1259 or [email protected].

I have had the best time thinking about Bryn's comments in her fine sermon on Sunday, January 10th that we get no goods or services back from the money we give to the church. It all depends on how we define these words! One could do a whole Stewardship Campaign around all the "Goods" and "Services" we receive. It all depends on the interpretation of these two words.

We receive many "GOODS". Thank goodness. Good fellowship. . . in many ways Good advice and guidance Good Christian education Good inspiration Good role-modeling Good character-building of our children (the best!!!) The list is practically endless, isn't it?

We receive many "SERVICES", and what blessings they are. Over 100 formal services every year, in fact. Plus all the sacraments And delivering flowers to shut-ins How about the other services provided to shut-ins? And the ministering services of the Stephen Ministers To say nothing of our fine Deacons And the amazing services offered to our cottage dwellers I fear I forget many services. Forgive me for that.

I think we are awash in Goods and Services! That is the Good News at CCB.

Praise be to God, your friend, Bob Lambert Stewardship Committee Alum (2003-2009)

Pastor’s Page Rev. Jennifer Whipple

How well do you know the person sitting next to you on Sunday mornings? For some of us this may seem like a “no-brainer.” We sit next to family or close friends. But how well do we really know them? I’m not talking about what their favorite food is or what they like to do in their free time. I am talking about why it is that they are sitting next to us at the Congregational Church of Brookfield on a Sunday morning when there are a million other options of things to be doing. How well do we know each others’ faith stories?

Our Lenten Theme this year will be “Telling Our Stories.” Wouldn’t it be great to know the places where our stories mesh or perhaps understand what it is that makes us see things differently? It has been said that we learn more about people when we are given the opportunity and privilege of hearing their life stories, their faith stories, their stories of the ways they have given of themselves to the world. Rev. Lillian Daniel wrote, “In our stories we connect to God’s larger story, and then connect even more to one another.” Our church leadership has had some time to work with some of these storytelling opportunities, and all who were able to do so have come out of experiences learning more about and connecting more to people that they have known for years. There is something about being able to speak our own truth and life that gives us strength and helps us find the places we belong.

So this Lent we are asking you to think a bit about the places where God has broken into your everyday lives, the reasons why you do belong to this community of faith and how you got here, and the ways that you are connected to God’s larger story and each other’s stories. Throughout the Lenten season you will have opportunities to hear some of the stories of some of our members and friends in worship and at Lenten Lunches, as well as in small group settings. We hope that you will join us in telling our stories!

We are looking for someone to host Coffee hour on Easter. If you would be interested in hosting with coffee and perhaps

some food please let Kristin Jordan or Pastor Bryn know. We

would be glad to assist you prior to Easter in what needs to be done if you have

not done coffee hour before. This is a great way to get to know people and

share in greeting visitors for the holiday. Thank you for help.
