The following is a critique of Gail Co, Clarissa Garcia, Gianina Guillermo. Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Ateneo De Manila, Thesis “No Time like Filipino Time” I

have chosen to critique this thesis for three reasons. First, this particular subject is of great interest to me knowing the theoretical and conceptual framework of this specific phenomena. Second, I’m so curious on how Ateneans do

their researches being in a Top 3 schools their data gathering, presentation and methodology is the similar

way I expect to do in my own research, Third. The researches created a good abstract and poster for their thesis which attract the reader’s attention and curiosity.

B. Executive summary

The researchers has written a concise, well-structured and thoughtful thesis that enhances our understanding

on Filipino Psychology on how Filipinos valued time. This

would be an important contribution, with this knowledge hope fully we could diminish and gradually eliminate this

negative association to our personality as a Filipino.

B. Statement of the Problem

B.1 Importance of the Problem

The Researchers identifies a crucial problem and intends to know what are the definition of a Filipino of Time and how do they value time and their clients. A very crucial and very vital topic that should be answered.

B.2 Clarity of Problem and Hypothesis Statements

The Problem stated the researchers on how does Filipinos value time is clearly expressed and succinct. The researchers converted this into a clear hypothesis that this salient behavior among Filipinos has its theoretical and psychological standing.

B.3 Link to Theory

The problem and hypothesis doesn’t have a clear theoretical framework it based its foundation just on the definition of culture. There are limited Filipino Psychology books, let-alone books that discusses Filipino time.

C. Objectives

Page 5: A critique paper2

This research intends tends to analyze Filipino time as a result of cultural and cognitive processes such as values,

norms and thinking patterns prevalent in the Filipino society.

The researchers intends to give answer to the following questions:

A.What is the meaning of Filipino Time?B.How is Filipino time demonstrated?

C.What factors could explain the occurrence of Filipino time?

D.What is the perceived effect of Filipino time?E. Is there a difference in context by which Filipino time

is demonstrated by means of socio-economic status?

D. Methodologies

Focus group discussions were conducted and each comprised of 6-8 participants with varying socio-

economic status. For consistency there was only on facilitator for all focus group discussions. Four questions patterned after the research questions were asked. After

each questions, participants were given a chance to answer and elaborate on their responses. It lasted 1 hour – 1 ½ hours. Thematic analysis were used to examine the

data

Page 6: A critique paper2

The statistical section is the weakest part of the thesis. The sample size is insufficient to support the hypothesis and is not the structured enough to support the whole

population. The analytical discussion, however, is excellent it made use of the narrative analysis method

which provide rich data about the subject in hand.

F. Statistical Treatment

Mainly qualitative data were gathered for this research thus usage of statistical data was diminished. narrative text was classified to sub-themes according to the pattern of the responses. In order to come up with the results.

This type date gathering method has its pros and cons narrative qualitative date yes do emit quality data and gives rich information about the topic. But in terms of application to the general population this form of date gathering method would present a lot of loopholes due to uncontrolled variables.

G. Findings

From the thesis conducted by the researchers it is evident that Filipino time is seen by Filipinos as negative yet could be also seen as neutral, as if this was already a system established among Filipinos. Yet a lot of foreign Managers frowned upon experiencing this innate personality of Filipinos.

H. Conclusion

Page 7: A critique paper2

The researchers concluded the study that Filipinos valuing time for granted, also coined as Filipino time, is already the system and have been already tolerated by

the society

The conclusion may have been so conclusive that it seems that nothing could be thought out on how to avoid

and if not possible diminish the occurrence of this negative behavior.

People change so does culture. We couldn’t always say that we are trapped in our ancestors experiences

somewhat a lot of their beliefs were already outdated in fact Filipino time is not Filipino in origin it came from the

Spaniards mayores who looked down on Filipino and don’t respect their time. We the new generations could still

enact change if we just all open our mind and move to a whole new perspective of being globally competent.
