H:

What an honor and thrill it is to be the first live main production back at Coronado Playhouse after an almost 18 month hiatus. In planning and prepping The

World Goes ‘Round alongside the cast, crew, creatives and designers, the one word that has been constant throughout our process has been a feeling of celebration:

A celebration of finally being able to assemble in one space again.

A celebration of creativity,

A celebration of artistry,

And a celebration of collaboration.

Ever since I was a small child, I have been directing and choreographing, whether it was in my basement or backyard. During this year, when the theatre community at large has been in a period of pause, I have reflected on why theatre is essential. At its rawest, I believe it creates joy for both its participants and audience alike. I challenged our cast to journey back in time and investigate their first spark of this theatre magic. What was their first experience performing, watching,

or experiencing theatre? In “restarting” I believe that fire for a live theatrical performance is more alive in all us than ever before.

I do not know a more celebratory songwriting team than John Kander and Fred Ebb. Each song in The World Goes ‘Round is a masterclass in storytelling or pizzaz (or both). Kander and Ebb’s songs and musicals have shaped musical theatre history for the better. Our goal tonight has been for us, as a team, to honor that history. We pay homage to how these songs have shaped our past, but are also approaching them in fresh new ways as humans who have been changed. We are people who have been singing and dancing alone in our bedrooms for many months and we are so happy to finally share our artistry and our stories with all of you once again. This is where we are now, in 2021, and we hope our joyful celebration will have you humming and high-kicking all the way home.

With Gratitude, Lauren Haughton Gillis Director

A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

Welcome to Coronado Playhouse and this performance of The World Goes ‘Round. Still feeling fresh out of quarantine, without a firm grip on the current reality, fluid as it is? Then Kander and Ebb’s lyrical interpretation of modern life will speak to you:

“Somebody loses and somebody winsAnd one day it’s kicks

Then it’s kicks in the shinsBut the planet spins

and the world goes ‘roundand ‘round”

In The World Goes ‘Round, the writers have abandoned a traditional overarching plot in favor of the compelling drama of a naturally unfolding human life. We take our lumps, get up and dust ourselves off because the world will continue to spin. And boy, do we know that storyline right now! This show captures the feeling some of us had as we stepped out of our homes after 18 months onto an already spinning roulette wheel. The hustle and bustle didn’t even miss a beat:

The trouble with the world todayit’s plain to see

is everything is hurry upand coffee in a cardboard cup!

Yet, despite the stress and mess, The World Goes ‘Round highlights the perseverance and triumph of the thing that keeps us holding on (besides gravity!): our human spirit. For this production, CPH welcomes a dynamic creative dream team. Director Lauren Haughton Gillis, and Music Director Richard Dueñez Morrison bring a combined wealth of talent, knowledge and professional experience to the Playhouse, satisfying our artistic expectations and taking them to new heights. Our small and mighty cast of incredible actors have worked hard to

give you the full range of emotion, power and thoughtfulness needed to bring this musical revue to life for you. Coronado Playhouse is proud to celebrate 75 years of vibrant volunteer community theatre! As always, we appreciate your vigorous generosity, support and feedback. Our “75 for 75” campaign is on a successful roll and your contribution today makes you a part of that great success. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to give at CoronadoPlayhouse.org/75for75/ We hope The World Goes ‘Round will inspire you to slow down, have a seat and take your coffee in a ceramic mug! COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:ACT San Diego Scholarship Program

For this show, we are spotlighting the ACT San Diego Scholarship Program. The ACT San Diego (Association of Community Theatre, San Diego) Scholarship Program was established in 1975 by ACT San Diego to promote and encourage higher education in the field of theatre arts. The Scholarship is awarded yearly to high school seniors and college students majoring in any of the theatre arts. At least $300 and no more than $1000 is awarded to deserving students each year.We encourage you to help us support our local ACT San Diego Scholarship

Program and our local students studying the arts. Find out about the Scholarship Program at www.actsd.org/scholarship.htm

as Cygnet Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director and Head of Casting. Much thanks to Lauren and Anthony for letting him be a part of this journey.

JAMIE BOYD (Production Stage Manager) is a budding Stage Manager in the San Diego area. She is focused on community and commitment being the driving forces of positive and impactful theatre. She graduated from San Diego State University in Spring 2020, Summa Cum Laude, with a BA in Theatre Arts and a minor in Television, Film, and New Media. During her time at San Diego State, she stage-managed various iterations of ’Til Death Do Us Part, a new musical directed by Stephen Brotebeck, and worked as a scenic painter on the various productions. With a love and respect for stage managing, collaboration and the creation of theatre, she is looking forward to learning more each day from the wonderful San Diego theatre community and beyond.

REIKO HUFFMAN (Scenic Designer) is excited to be a part of the first re-opening show at Coronado Playhouse. In addition to The World Goes Round, Reiko is currently designing other local shows such as Songs for A New World with Teatro San Diego at OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista and The Mineola Twins at MOXIE. Recent and additional upcoming credits outside of San Diego include Far From Canterbury with the Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, NH, Head Over Heels at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Hello Dolly! also with Nebraska Wesleyan University.

SCOTT BOYNTON (Projections Designer) is elated and relieved that live events are finally returning. This is Scott’s first production with Coronado Playhouse and first design gig since graduating San Diego State University’s MFA program in Design and Technology for Theatre, Film, and Television (emphasis in scenic and projection design) in 2020. Talk about unfavorable timing! Other projection

credits include SDSU’s James and the Giant Peach, Leonard Bernstein’s MASS, El Colibrí Mágico (“The Magic Hummingbird” - World Premiere) and Just Like Us. Visit scottboyntondesign.com for past work in scenic, production and media design. Please note, the projection designer, nor Coronado Playhouse, claim or assume any ownership of the original graphic designs for Broadway shows presented in the finale, “The World Goes ‘Round (Reprise)”.

MARC AKIYAMA (Sound Designer) is a composer for film and theatre, and the co-founder of Akiyama Music, a film scoring and production studio. Marc is the Resident Sound Designer for Trinity Theatre Company and Coronado Playhouse. He scores a wide array of films from animation to original musicals, including Brush with Disney Animator, Garrett Lewis, while spanning multiple genres from jazz to orchestral. Marc co-hosts The Song to Screen Podcast, which explores storytelling techniques of film and theatre music. He and his brother produce creative content for their studio including original films and tutorial videos. Visit Akiyama Music for more.

STAN SOTH (Master Carpenter) can barely believe that it has been very nearly a decade since Coronado Playhouse welcomed him, as a new retiree from the Health Care field, into their family to learn to design and build sets and props. Most recently, he has earned credit for designing and building sets for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (co-designed with his granddaughter, Lillian Soth), Guys and Dolls, Moon Over Buffalo, Harlem Duet and The Comedy of Errors. He wishes to thank his patient and loving wife, Shirley, for encouraging his theater involvement and all of the enormously talented men and women who have helped him develop many skills he never even suspected he had and then, made him look so good with their excellent and loving guidance.

In honor of our 75th anniversary, Coronado Playhouse is inviting you to join our 75 for 75 campaign. For only $75, you will be helping Coronado Playhouse stay afloat in this pivotal year. Your $75 donation will help Coronado Playhouse continue to show-case art that engages, enlightens, and entertains!
