Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was the organist and treasurer (!) of the presti-gious St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck, one of the wealthy North German Hanseatic League cities. His reputation as a performer and composer drew the young J. S. Bach to walk 250 km, in order to learn from the great master. Praeludia for organ are multi-sectional, contrasting recit-like passages with stricter fugal sections. The Praeludium in g minor, BuxWV 149 is one of Buxtehude’s later works, and has an aura of great solemnity. The opening ostinato bass, as well as the use of stile antico fugal writing, reinforce this sense of gravity. -JO

About this morning’s choral and organ music…

Heinrich Scheidemann (1595-1663) was one of the greatest organist-composers of his generation. A student of Sweelinck, he was famed as organist of St. Cather-ine’s Church in Hamburg, North Germany. The Magnificat (the Song of Mary, found at Luke 1: 46-55) is traditionally sung at the afternoon liturgy of Vespers, but is also strongly associated with the season of Advent and latterly, with social justice causes. Scheidemann’s Magnificat settings are intended for the ancient practice of alternatim singing, in which a choir, cantor or congregation sings a verse, and the organ plays an elaborated verse in response.

Mark Sirett is a prominent Canadian choral conductor and composer, whose work with the Cantabile choirs in Kingston, ON is justly renowned. Ecce concip-ies sets the mystical text of the Annunciation, in which the Angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary that she will become the mother of Christ. John Sheppard was associated with both Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Chapel Royal. He was instrumental in Mary Tudor’s restoration of the Sarum rite to the Chapel, and following the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549 also contributed significantly to the repertoire of English-language liturgical music. His music has a luminous, otherworldly quality that immediately sets it apart from his equally gifted contemporaries Thomas Tallis and William Byrd.
