WELCOME TO YOUR COMMUNITYThis Community Portrait is a gift from your friends at Purdue Federal Credit Union (Purdue Federal) with the help of local artists who provided illustrations of our community to celebrate your arrival in Lafayette-West Lafayette.
As with any growing and evolving community, no one publication can comprehensively capture every adventure and detail available in such a progressive and diverse environment. Yet, the essence of our community is hall- marked within this “portrait” with whispers of our past influences, examples of our humanity, and references to strong educational, medical and business alliances. Included are examples of creative endeavors, efforts to preserve our environment and historical significance, and places where pleasures are experienced.
We welcome you to join us as our community canvas is realized. It is our wish that your personal creativity will also develop to its fullest as you establish your family, work, and life in the Lafayette-West Lafayette community.
Welcome home!

Native American and French InfluencesThe first residents of Tippecanoe County came here nearly 12,000 years ago, after the glaciers that carved out the Wabash River Valley receded. Various Native American groups were the only occupants of this area until the French fur traders and missionaries arrived in the 1700s. The French Fort Ouiatenon in West Lafayette was the first white settlement in Indiana and served as an important location for fur trade between Quebec and New Orleans.

The great Native American chief, Tecumseh, along with his brother, The Prophet, attempted to preserve the Native American way of life and manage a confed-eration of tribes from their settlement at Prophetstown. In 1811, William Henry Harrison defeated an army of Native Americans led by Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe. From this time on, the area was under the control of the European settlers, and Indiana became a state just five years later in 1816.
Lafayette EmergesAn early settler and riverman, William Digby, platted the city of Lafayette in 1825, naming it after a French hero of the Revolutionary War, Marquis de Lafayette. Tippecanoe County was formed in 1826, and Lafayette was named as its county seat. The Wabash River provided a transportation route from Lafayette to New Orleans. And, when the Wabash & Erie Canal was completed in the 1840s, transportation to eastern markets was also available. The 1850s brought rail-roads to the town, and Lafayette became a center of manufacturing, merchandising and transportation.

The town we know as West Lafayette today was platted in 1836; however, West Lafayette has been through various changes including the name. The first location of the settlement was located in a flood plain so it was moved to the top of the hill. Jesse and Jane Lutz then platted the town of Kingston in 1855; the town of Chauncey, bordering Kingston, was platted in 1860. Eventually, these towns, along with some other settlements became one known as Chauncey in 1866. In 1888, the people of Chauncey decided to rename their town West Lafayette.

Purdue’s PresencePurdue University was the first land-grant college to open in Indiana. John Purdue, a wealthy businessman, was able to secure the site for the university by donating 100 acres of land and pledging $150,000 of his own money; he also was instrumental in securing $50,000 worth of pledges from other local businessmen. Purdue University opened its doors in 1874 with six faculty members, 46 students, a 100-acre farm and five build-ings. In the 2013-14 academic year, Purdue served nearly 40,000 students at its West Lafayette campus, as well as thousands more at its five regional campuses.

DemographicsSince the first government census in 1830, Tippecanoe County has seen tremendous growth in many areas. In that first census only 7,167 people called Tippecanoe County home, but according to the 2015 census the area is home to an estimated 185,000 people and more than 489,000 live in the 12-county surrounding area.

Ethnic and International Richness The first Europeans to settle in Tippecanoe County were the French fur traders in 1717. During this time they joined the Wea Indians already living in the area to make Tippecanoe County a “bi-cultural” settlement at Fort Ouiatenon. That marked the begin-ning of the rich cultural diversity found here today.
In the last 300 years, Tippecanoe County has truly become multicultural, as it is now home to people from different countries around the globe. Purdue University hosts nearly 8,702 international students and 1,122 international faculty and staff members representing more than 125 world nations. The 2008 Census figures list 10 percent of residents countywide and nearly 17 percent of West Lafayette residents as members of races other than white.

Many opportunities exist for international residents to assimilate into the area, socialize with other members of their ethnic groups, and most importantly, share the ethnic and international richness of their cultures with the Lafayette-West Lafayette community.
One such opportunity is the International Center. It offers numerous classes, services and activities for international students and Tippecanoe County residents. Non-native English speakers have several classes from which to choose to help them learn English speaking and writing, as well as opportunities for in-formal English conversation. The center also conducts classes in many languages for members of the community, including Chi-nese, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
Several opportunities for social activities also exist at the center for children and adults, including: international cooking classes, Tai Chi Chuan, playgroups for parents with infants or toddlers, guitar lessons and even dance parties. Field trips to places of interest in the local area and out-of-town locations such as Chicago are also offered by the International Center. The International Food Bazaar each spring serves as a fundraiser as well as an outreach to the local community, and has been a popular event for more than 25 years.

The Black Cultural Center at Purdue University has existed since 1969 and moved into a distinctive geometrically designed building on campus in 1999. Its purpose is to help black students develop a better understanding and appreciation of their heritage while bringing cultural diversity to Purdue and the community. You can catch performances by groups such as the Black Voices of Inspiration, The Haraka Writers, the Jahari Dance Troupe and the New Directional Players. The cultural center also houses space for rehearsals, library, computer lab, art gallery and offices.

Purdue also is home to the Latino Cultural Center, which serves students of Hispanic and Latin American origins. This center, which opened in 2003, hosts several weekly activities, such as movie night and Spanish conversation nights. Its purpose is also to enrich the general understanding of the Hispanic/Latino cultures and to provide opportunities for participation in unique cultural activities.
The Native American Educational and Cultural Center at Purdue, established in 2007, fosters a culturally diverse and intellectually inclusive campus environment. It regularly hosts programs and events for Native American students and the community.
The Minority Health Coalition of Tippecanoe County, Inc. seeks to improve the quality of life for racial or ethnic minorities by providing education, advocacy and quality health care services.
Several racial or ethnic groups have support groups in our community. Among these are the Chinese Lafayette-West Lafayette Alliance, the Korean Church of Purdue, and Sisterfriends: The Network, which provides opportunities for networking and fellowship for African-American women.

In 1993, Lafayette became a Sister City with Ota, Japan. The purpose of this program, which was initiated by President Eisenhower in 1956, is to promote cultural, social and economic ties between the two cities. Since the early 1990s over 100 Lafayette citizens have represented our city in visits to Ota, while Lafayette has hosted many Japanese visitors.
Other organizations focus on area neighborhoods. The Hanna Community Center provides facilities for pro-grams and services for individuals and groups in the area neighborhood. The Hanna Neighborhood Association, which meets at the Hanna Center on a regular basis, works to preserve harmony, health and safety in this diverse neighborhood.
On Lafayette’s south side, the Community and Family Resource Center (CFRC) serves a similar purpose for that neighborhood. Some of the programs coordinated by the CFRC are a food pantry, youth drop-in programs, emergency services, family preservation and Hispanic outreach.
McAllister Center, on Lafayette’s north end, offers youth and adult fitness programs, youth basketball leagues, day camps for children and other programming.
In West Lafayette, Morton Community Center has become a hub for arts, dance, health, craft and other classes.
As the community grows, so does the interesting and exciting cultural diversity of this area. In some ways, Tippecanoe County can be seen as a “melting pot,” because so many different cultural groups live and work together as one. In other ways, it could be considered more of a “salad bowl,” as each ethnic group retains its uniqueness and brings its distinctive character together with other groups to form a wonderfully diverse and rich blend.

The earliest known Europeans to settle in the area were French fur traders who established Fort Ouiatenon in 1717. A replica of the Block House was built in 1930 on the grounds located south of West Lafayette on South River Road. This site offers picnic facilities and hosts the annual Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. Programs and tours may be arranged through the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.
The Lahr House at 5th and Main Streets, now a mixed-use redevelopment, has provided lodging since 1831. The restoration of this house led to a revitalization of downtown. While John Purdue lived at the Lahr House he held many of his planning meetings for Purdue University. Ulysses S. Grant and Mark Twain have also both been connected to the Lahr House.
Around 1851, Moses Fowler, a prominent Lafayette merchant and cattleman, built the magnificent Fowler House in Gothic Revival style, to reflect his social status in the community. This home stayed in the Fowler family and endured some remodeling, until 1940, when the grandson of Moses Fowler, Cecil Fowler, sold it to the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. From 1941 until the present time, the Fowler House, at 909 S. 9th Street has served as the home of the Tippecanoe County Historical Museum.
The oldest building still standing at Purdue University is University Hall. Built in 1877, it was designed by James Wilson in the Second Empire and Italianate styles. The interior of the building was renovated in 1960, but the exterior remains true to the original building. Today classes are still held in University Hall.

The Knight-Loeb House was built on Cincinnati Street in 1882 by Emerson P. Knight of New York City. He moved to Lafayette to establish a grain business. Built in the Italianate style, the house had 14½-inch thick exterior walls and 9½-inch thick interior walls. The home also had amenities unusual for the time it was built, such as central heating, an indoor toilet and an alarm system.
In 1895, Mr. Knight sold the house to Solomon and Carrie Loeb, who lived there for 50 years. The Loebs are remembered for Loeb’s Department Store and also for their generous philanthropic gifts. Although the house was remodeled and converted into apartments in the 1950s, it was later restored to its original style and floor plan in 1995. It now houses The Loeb House Bed and Breakfast.
The Tippecanoe County Courthouse currently in use was built in 1882, at a cost of $500,000, which was twice the original estimate. In 1991, major renovation of the courthouse was completed, at a cost of more than $15 million. The courthouse is filled with many historical elements, both inside and out, and it is well worth the time to visit the courthouse for a self-guided tour. Baroque, Gothic, Georgian, Victorian, Beaux Arts, Neo-Classical and Second Empire styles, influenced the architecture of the building.

The Big Four Depot at Riehle Plaza is a renovated railroad terminal that once served the Lake Erie & Western Railroad, Cleveland Railroad, Cincinnati Railroad and Chicago & St. Louis Railroad. The depot was built in 1902 and nicknamed “The Big Four” because of the four railroads. The depot building was moved two blocks to its present location in Riehle Plaza in 1994, as a part of the railroad relocation project. The relocation project was a major accomplishment of James F. Riehle, who served as Lafayette’s mayor for 24 years. Many of the original items restored in the depot include the telegrapher’s office, terrazzo floor, visitor benches and leaded glass windows. The Depot serves as the centerpiece for Riehle Plaza, which is the site of many downtown Lafayette events and connects the two cities via the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.
The Long Center for the Performing Arts, built in 1920 as the Mars Theater, is historically significant not only architecturally, but also for its associations with famous actors and actresses. The theater was built by a local firm in the Neo-Classical style, and hosted such theater greats as Bob Hope, Al Jolson, Ruby Keeler, the Marx Brothers, Ethel Merman and Will Rogers. In 1977, the theater was given to the City of Lafayette by Irving Long. Today it serves the community by providing rehearsal and performance space for various local arts groups such as The Lafayette Sym-phony Orchestra, The Lafayette Ballet Company and Civic Theatre.

Several historic neighborhoods in Lafayette and West Lafayette have established neighborhood organizations to promote the preservation of homes, churches and other buildings in their areas. Some organizations publish bro-chures, which include walking tours of the neighborhoods, while others have established websites. Some of the neigh-borhoods sponsor annual events, such as the Ninth Street Hill Association’s Festooned Fourth and Holiday Luminaria Display. Many of the neighborhoods have several homes or other buildings that have received various preservation awards and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A few of these neighborhoods and districts include our Downtown Historic District, Upper Main Street Historic District and the historic neighborhoods of:
• Centennial
• Highland Park
• Jefferson
• Hanna
• St. Mary
• Ellsworth-Romig
• Hills and Dales
• Chauncey

Historical MuseumsFor more historical information, visit the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, which operates three historical sites in Tippecanoe County and provides educational programs.
The site of the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe between the forces of William Henry Harrison and Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and the Prophet is preserved in Battle Ground and includes the Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum.
The Fort Ouiatenon Blockhouse at the Fort Ouiatenon Historic Park was the home for French fur traders in the 1700s and now is the site of the annual Feast of the Hunters’ Moon each fall.
The Alameda McCullough Library in the Wetherill Resource Center houses a comprehensive collection of historical and genealogical resources. Information is available to residents for research purposes.
Historic Prophetstown, an independent group, operates in Prophetstown State Park. It has a recreated Native American village, restored prairie and a living history farm circa 1920s. The farmhouse is an ideal space for parties, receptions or meetings. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is in partnership with the museum to provide a unique opportunity for the public to experience this heritage. Some of the events held at the museum include planting, threshing, harvesting, storytelling, horse- drawn hayrides and sleigh rides, and musical programs.

Parks and PlaygroundsTippecanoe County offers ample green space, with more than 30 parks where residents can relax and play. From amusement park rides to quiet rippling brooks, every type of leisure activity is accommodated in this array of venues.
Columbian Park and Zoo continues to serve the Lafayette-West Lafayette area by providing a variety of attractions that have been enjoyed by “kids of all ages” for more than a century.
The Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) Playground, dedicat-ed in 1999, provides equipment especially tailored to chil-dren of all ages and developmental stages. The playground is open year round and there is no admission fee. During the summer months, visitors to the park can enjoy amuse-ment park rides and water activities at Tropicanoe Cove.

The Tropicanoe Cove water park includes play areas for non-swimmers. Parents can relax on inner tubes as they float along the Cattail Crik. Older children and young adults will find plenty of thrills available on some of the exciting slides and other water attractions.
Columbian Park also contains the 3,500-seat Loeb Stadium, which hosts IHSAA Tournaments, American Legion baseball and the Colt World Series. Loeb Stadium is now home to the Lafayette Aviators who will play their first games in 2016. The Lafayette Aviators are the 13th team to join the Prospect League; a summer league for collegiate players hoping to get better and play profes-sionally.
Columbian Park Zoo, fully renovated in 2007 with new exhibits continually being added, features nearly 200 animals in natural habitats representing 79 different spe-cies. Exhibits include a family petting farm; bald eagle area; butterfly house, bog and sculpture garden; and prairie dog area. The zoo offers educational programs year round. The park also houses rentable picnic facili-ties; the historic Rush Pavilion; and Memorial Island and its outdoor theatre, dedicated to service veterans.

Festivals and ParadesArea residents love to enjoy the great outdoors and the company of others at a variety of local festivals and parades.
Each April, Purdue hosts Spring Fest, a hands-on family event.
Downtown is often buzzing with activity. Starting with the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair in late May, downtown also hosts the Taste of Tippecanoe in June. Summer is time for the Stars & Stripes Concert and Fireworks Display, Dancing in the Streets, Riverfest and Uptown Jazz and Blues Festival. In West Lafayette, Art in Bloom showcases residential gardens and artists at work. The Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering is held at the Battlefield at Battle Ground in June.
Another favorite is Art on the Wabash: A Local Artists’ Fair along the Wabash River, and West Lafayette also celebrates Global Fest over the Labor Day weekend. And teams of basketball players join up to play in the 3-on-3 Gus Macker Basketball Tournament each September.
December brings the Christmas Parade and a Dickens of a Christmas. Year round, children enjoy adventures at Imagination Station, a science and space museum.
