MISSION STATEMENT We are a Parish Community
of men and women who serve God, our country and one another. Inspired by St. Bernard’s love
of God and humanity, we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by
praying and worshipping together, educating one another in faith,
providing assistance for those in need, working for justice in the world, and
welcoming all to the sacramental life of the Church in the Roman Catholic tradition.
With Faith, Hope, and Love, we dedicate ourselves to the mission of living and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in the world.
PARISH MEMBERSHIP We welcome new members to St. Bernard’s Parish, a community of faith, hope, and love. We will strive to foster your spiritual growth and hope you will share with us the gifts God has given to you. Please register by stopping by the rectory and completing the registration form. MAINTAINING OUR BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
In March a representative from the Risk Management Office of the diocese conducted an inspection of the parish facilities. This is done periodically for every parish in the diocese. Its aim is to insure that the parish buildings and grounds are safe and well maintained. A further concern is to reduce as much as possible law-suits that can result from safety hazards and poor maintenance. The cover letter in the report reads as follows: St. Bernard’s has exemplary risk management programs and was found to be very well maintained. The consultation resulted in the fewest recommendations made in a parish this year. What was identified were minor physical improvements….. Those who work to clean and maintain our buildings and grounds often work behind the scenes. But a report like this reminds us of the good work they perform. I might take this occasion to list the names of these men:
Altamesch Agha - Maintenance Worker
Mario Villataro – Maintenance Worker
Frank Santillo – Maintenance Supervisor
Len Lanzi – Facilities Manager In addition our basic landscaping is performed by Evan De Bono. It is only right that we should take pride in our parish facilities much as you take pride in the appearance and condition of your home. Your financial support en-ables us to keep our buildings and grounds safe, beautiful, and well maintained. While there is always room to keep making improvements, it’s good to know that St. Bernard’s receives a high rating.
Office Transitions We are in a transition stage with those working in the parish office as the voluntary separation program goes into effect. Over the next several weeks you will be seeing new faces and we will be saying goodbye to some very familiar ones. They include: Terri and Bill Votta, Marilyn Gancio, Tom Mawn (later in May) Fran Witkowski, Kathy Salvatierra, Alice Wasielewski, and Ann Shields. In the next issue of the bulletin we will highlight each of these fine employees and pay tribute to their years of service to the parish.
“LET US THEN BE UP AND DOING” ( O.W.Holmes )
The poet calls us to throw off the worst Winter most of us can remember and to take the energy of a blessed Spring.
So—- Let’s do it !
Our Garden Group needs your help as we wake up our sleepy landscape, plant perennials, and celebrate our annual Spring Planting.
Come join us, bring a tool or two, enjoy father Jerry’s hospitality and help transform our cherished acres.

Electronic Offertory Giving with Faith Direct
This month we are introducing a new and exciting way for you to support our parish offertory: Faith Direct. Faith Direct enables your family to make your parish contributions through either direct debit to your checking account or through your Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover credit cards. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door . Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments.
With Faith Direct, St. Bernard's will gain predictable cash flow that will help us with planning our parish needs and programs. Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket.
Of course, enrollment is voluntary, but many parishes and their members around the country have experienced a win-win with Faith Direct. If you find this program to be appropriate for your family, please enroll by responding to the mailings you will receive or visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely on line. Our parish code is NY272. In the Lord, Father Jerry

Offertory Cards
Because we understand that many people would feel un-comfortable not having an envelope to place in the basket, we provide "offertory cards" to be used as a visible sign of your participation in the Faith Direct program.

April 18, 2010
As we move into the Third Week of Easter, it may be
difficult to maintain the same level of Easter enthusi-asm. Nevertheless, the celebration of Christ’s Resurrec-tion should continue to be proclaimed with joy. Today’s Eucharistic focus is established with the account of the meal Jesus shares with his disciples.

MONDAY NIGHT
CLASSES
THE FATHERS OF THE
CHURCH
WITH
MONSIGNOR GRAHAM
8:00 pm in the Parish Center.
On April 19, the subject will be St. Ignatius of
Antioch. The classes begin after Novena prayers in the church. Please join us for this interesting talk.
Prayer for Pope Benedict XVI
Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to
your shepherd, Benedict, a spirit of courage and
right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love.
By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his
care, may he, as successor to the Apostle Peter
and Vicar of Christ, build your Church into a
sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the
world. Amen.
V. Let us pray for Benedict, the pope.
R. May the Lord preserve him,
give him a long life,
make him blessed upon the earth, and not
hand him over to the power of his enemies.
V. May your hand be upon your holy servant.
R. And upon your son, whom you have
anointed.
Our Father… Hail Mary...Glory Be…
Blessed are you when they insult you and perse-
cute you and utter every kind of evil against you
falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for
your reward will be great in heaven.”

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., 731-6074
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL:
We are most grateful to Girl Scout Troop # 3416 for their donation of Girl Scout cookies, and to Gary Crozier and the members of Kiwanis for their large food donation. Thanks also to our Island Harvest drivers who bring “rescued” food to our pantry. During the month of March, we were privileged to help meet the needs of 315 people (154 children, 151 adults, 10 seniors). Since many people come more than once a month, 795 (duplicated) persons received food from the pantry. (Last year’s number was 519!) Fortunately we are able to meet the needs of those who come, thanks to everyone’s great generosity! This week our pantry needs include: cereal, canned meat and fish, canned ravioli, hearty soups, canned and dried Goya-type beans, rice, potatoes (boxed and canned), tomato sauces and other tomato products, canned vegetables (except green beans), peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, dessert mixes, canned fruit, coffee and tea. Paper goods (tissues, napkins, towels and toilet tissue) are always welcome, as are toiletries, Pampers and wipes (since they cannot be purchased with food stamps. Please remember to “buy one, get one free,” and don’t forget the poor boxes. God bless!
SPEAKING OF “FOOD STAMPS…”
Actually, “food stamps” have gone the way of the dinosaur! Those who are approved to receive what are called food stamps receive what is called an E.B.T. card which looks like an ATM card. When someone uses the card to purchase food, he/she swipes the card and the
amount of the purchase is deducted from the card. This assures privacy for the purchaser. Should you be struggling to make ends meet, you might consider speaking to us about eligibility requirements for food stamps. In addition, you may visit the website: www.mybenefits.ny.gov/selfservice to pre-screen yourself! A third option is to call the Health and Welfare Council at 516-483-1110, ext. 431 where you can be pre-screened over the phone.
CHARITABLE KIDZ FOOD DRIVE AT KING KULLEN:
Our KIDZ conducted a food drive at King Kullen on Saturday, April 17th. Thanks to all parents, KIDZ, and supporters of the drive. We also appreciate the cooperation of the managers and staff at King Kullen. We know that the food received through this drive will be helpful as we approach the warmer weather and supplies decrease. Thanks, especially to Carol and Ted Blach who offer such outstanding leadership as excellent role models for our young people.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION:
Catholic Charities USA is celebrating its 100th year of ministry. All are invited to a special Mass on Saturday, May 22nd at 2:30 p.m. at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale. A reception will follow immediately. The work of Catholic Charities in our diocese is extraordinary, helping thousands of Long Islanders in education, health care, social services of all kinds. Your presence would be a blessing at the event.
APRIL 22ND IS EARTH DAY!
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 and was the beginning of a small movement driven by those who were concerned about cleaning up our air and water. Very few “church” people were involved at the beginning, but since that time there has been a real sense among believing people that our earth has been given to us by God as a sacred trust. On this day, and every day, we honor our Mother Earth and recommit ourselves to preserving this gift for ourselves and for the generations to come.
Happy 40th Earth Day!
