Welcometothe12thseasonofLiveWire,theSpringfieldYouthOrchestras(SYO)CommunityofChamberMusicians.ThischambermusicsocietyprovidesauniqueperformingopportunitytoselectmusiciansoftheSYO.LiveWireissupportedinfullbytheSpringfieldSymphonyOrchestraandtheSpringfieldYouthOrchestrasParentsAssociation,andsponsoredbySecurityNationalBank.

Youhavebeenselectedtotakepartinaveryexcitingmusicalexperience.The2018-2019Seasonwillbeamemorableone,providingyouwithmusicalchallengesandopportunityforgrowth.LiveWiremembersarementoredandcoachedbytheprofessionalmusiciansoftheSpringfieldSymphony.

Thishandbookcontainsmostoftheinformationyouwillneedasmembers.Membersandparentsshouldbecomefamiliarwithitscontents-especiallythepoliciesandprocedurespertainingtoattendanceandsupportofyourschoolorchestraand/orbandprogram.

LIVE WIRE Eligibility SYOMembershipandAttendance:TobeeligibleformembershipinLiveWireyoumustbeamemberingoodstandingoftheSpringfieldSymphonyYouthOrchestrasprogram.ItisveryimportantthatbothmembersandparentsbefamiliarwithandunderstandtheattendanceandmembershippoliciesoftheSYO.Failuretoobservethesepoliciesmayresultindenialofconcertparticipationand/ordismissalfromtheensemble.HowMembersareSelected:AllensemblerostersaresubjecttotherecommendationsofSYOconductorsandsectioncoaches.FortheStringandWoodwindensembles,LiveWiremembersarechosenprimarilyfromtheprincipalplayersoftheYouthOrchestras,asdeterminedbytheseatingauditionsofeachseasonandstudentavailability.Someconsiderationisgivenalsotomaintainingcontinuityofpersonnelintheensemblesfromyeartoyear,ifwarranted.Onceselected,thepersonnelofeachensemblewillremainthesamethroughouttheseason.ForthePercussionensemble,allSYOpercussionmembersmaybeeligible,withthefinalrosterstobedeterminedbyinstrumentationneeds.Coaching:TheconductoroftheYouthSymphonywillcoachtheYouthSymphonyStringQuartet.CoachesforWoodwindQuintet,BrassQuartet,ClarinetTrioandPercussionEnsembleareprofessionalmusiciansintheregion.Coacheswillgettheensemblesstartedonrepertoire,andworkwithstudentsonthefinepointsofensembleplaying,withthefinalgoalbeingthateachensemblewillbeableto“self-rehearse”.Tuition:Anon-refundableyearlytuitionfeeof$50.00isrequired.Membersmaynotparticipateuntiltheirtuitionhasbeenpaidinfull,orarrangementsforfinancialaidhavebeenmade.ChecksshouldbemadepayabletotheSpringfieldSymphonyOrchestra.Thetuitionfeepartiallycoversmusiccosts,facilityrental,administrativecosts,andprofessionalcoaching.Iffinancialaidisneeded,pleasecontactNomiMarcus.Application/CommitmentFormandSchedule:Thefinalpageofthishandbookincludesatentativescheduleofsomeofthealreadyknownperformancedatesfor2018-2019.TobecomeamemberoftheLiveWireprogramyoumustbeabletocommittothemajorityof

thesedates.Additionalperformancedateswillbeaddedastheseasonprogresses,andNomiMarcuswillalwaysconfirmstudentavailabilitybeforecommittinganyensembletoaperformance.Ensemblemembersmaycollectivelydecidetoschedulemorerehearsals.PleaseletNomiknowinadvanceofadditionalrehearsalsthatyouwouldliketoscheduleforyourgroup. WithdrawalorDismissalfromtheSYOorLiveWire:Youareexpectedtomakeafullyear’scommitmenttotheSpringfieldYouthOrchestraLiveWireprogram. Ifyoumustwithdraw,youmustdoso inwriting, indicatingthereasonsandcircumstancesforyourwithdrawal.Norefundoftuitionwillbeextended.FailuretoobservethepoliciesfromtheLiveWireandSYOHandbooksmayresultindenialofconcertparticipationand/ordismissalfromtheensemble.

Rehearsal Etiquette Nothingindicatesyourlevelofprofessionalismlikethewayyouhandleyourselfintherehearsalroom.

● Punctuality:Punctualityasamusicianmeansgettingtotherehearsalroomearlyenoughtosetup,tuneupandwarmupbeforerehearsalbegins.Ifyou'rerunninglate--evenifyou'llarriveontimebutnotwithenoughtimetosetup,callahead.Thislendscredibilitytoyou.

● Communication:Speakwithyourinstrument!Whilechambermusicissocialandyouwillhavefun,pleasecommunicateonlywhennecessaryandkeeptheconversationontopic--therehearsal.

● Courtesy:Itisimportanttorealizethatchambermusic-makingisaconstantflowofgiveandtake.Pleasealloweachmemberthefreedomtomakesuggestionsandhavethemrealisticallyconsidered.Chambermusicisateamactivity;pleaseallowcourteousandrespectfulthoughtstoguideyourconversations.

Performance Etiquette Allofthesuggestionsforrehearsaletiquetteapplytoyourperformances.Pleasebemindfulthatyourepresentnotonlyyourself,butalsoyourchamberensembleandallofthestudentmusiciansoftheSpringfieldSymphonyYouthOrchestras.Additionalitemstoconsider:

● Dress: Dressappropriately.Poordresssendsthemessagetotheaudiencethatyoudon'tcareabouttheperformanceor theaudience.Youwant theaudiencetobe listeningtoyourmusic! Ifyou looknice theywilltakenoteofitinapositivewaywithoutdwellingonit.Pleaserefertothedresscodelistedbelow.

● Mechanics:Iftheperformancesettingisappropriateforbowing,makesureallmembersareonthesamepage as to when andwhere to do so. Try to do all of your tuning off stage and once on stage,make sureeveryone is ready to performbefore starting the first piece. Eye contact is essential. Ensemble coacheswillworkwiththegrouponthefinerpointsofperformanceetiquette.
