There will be bronze plaques for the South African War (Boer War), WW 1, WW 2 & post WW 2 (Korea, Vietnam, Malaya, Rwanda & Afghanistan etc). In the centre of the Wall will be the three Service Badges (RAN, Army & RAAF), cast in bronze as well. Why a Memorial Wall? Some local community members approached the Hall Committee with the proposal because of the interest within the Australian community to know who locally served the nation in Wars and Conflicts, and of course it is an element of tourism and interest from people travelling through. The Hall Committee received a grant through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as part of the Centenary of ANZAC grants from the Federal Govern- ment. However, we did not receive enough money to complete the project. The majority of the Grant money went to building the Wall. We estimate that the cost of the plaques and the Service Badges will be $10,000.00. That is, it will cost approximately $20.00 per name and there are 500 names to go on the wall. The Hall Committee is giving the Pyramid Hill & District Community the opportunity to contribute to the completion of the Memorial Wall. If you have a family member or friend whose name will be on the Wall and you would like to make a donation, then we will gratefully accept it. We have $1000.00 of funds so far which includes a donation from the Historical Society and the remainder of the Grant money. It is possible to make a donation to our Treasurer, Kate Wood or Chairperson, Ron Peacock. If you are able to do electronic banking we can pass on our banking details. The Wall will be “opened” by our local Member the Honourable Dr Sharman Stone MLC, at 2pm, on Friday, 13 th November 2015. By that stage we expect to have the Boer War and WW 1 plaques manufactured and attached to the Wall. Last Press next week before the holidays

Pyramid Hill Memorial Wall

You may have noticed that there is a stand alone wall in the forecourt of the Memorial Hall. The wall is a Memorial Wall and will eventually have the names of all those who served from our district in war, armed conflict and peacekeeping missions.

The Hall Committee received a grant through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as part of the Centenary of ANZAC grants from the Federal Govern-ment. The Wall will be “opened” by our local Member the Honourable Dr Sharman Stone MLC, at 2pm, on Friday, 13th November 2015. By that stage we expect to have the Boer War and WW 1 plaques manufactured and attached to the Wall.

Refrigerated Rail Cars !

The whole of the 96 ice trucks ordered by the Railway department for cool transport of perishable goods, especially butter, have now been completed. This will terminate the work of the department in that direction for the present, the rolling stock now being up to requirements. Great satisfaction has been expressed by those using the new trucks. They have however, been proven unsuitable for the carriage of rabbits. A consign-ment from Wangaratta arrived in Melbourne smelling very badly.

Grant for Pyramid Hill CollegeGrant for Pyramid Hill CollegeGrant for Pyramid Hill CollegeGrant for Pyramid Hill College Bu Gould, Indonesian teacher, together with Language Assistant, Tiara Maharani, were very excited to receive a grant of $1,000 from Shane Koelmeyer, from the Victorian Teachers Mutual Bank. The 2015 Teaching Initiatives Program is offered to schools and pre-schools across Victoria for innovative learning ideas and programs. This year, the funding is being made available in the categories of: Indigenous Culture, Sustainability, Engage with Asia and General Curriculum. The College, for the category of Engaging with Asia, is planning an Indonesian Cultural Day to be held in term 4, which will give students, right across the school, the opportunity to experience different aspects of Indonesian culture such as—music, dance, games, food.

Speaker:

Chaplain Duncan Becsi Royal Australian Navy Senior Chaplain, Establishments

and Training Duncan’s family came from Hungary, his father escaped in 1956 in his late teens during the Soviet invasion and occupation of his homeland. On his way to the United States his ship stopped off in Melbourne where he was offered work in a factory if he stayed and played soccer for Hungaria – a semi professional football club. His mother immigrated to Australia when she was a young girl. They met (his mother was just 16 and his father couldn’t speak English) and much to the displeasure of his mother’s parents, they fell in love and soon after got married. Duncan grew up in WA, joined the navy at 17 and after 8 years, left to study Theology and become a Minister. He served as a Minister for six years when he was approached by the Defence to consider Reserve work as a Navy Chaplain. This led to full time service in 2004. Duncan has served on many vessels and has been deployed twice to the Middle East.

Ex Local on Track to

Achieve Goal Rebecca Bulley

(Rebecca Strachan)

Born in Pyramid Hill and beginning school at Pyramid Hill College, Rebecca began her netball career as a junior at Calivil United. She then joined the Bendigo Football Netball League when her family moved to Bendigo, where she played at Sandhurst Football Netball Club under coach Carol Byers. Rebecca remembers the challenges of being an up-and-coming country netballer and is grateful to her parents, Leon and Lynley Strachan, for their encourage-ment. “I remember the first state netball trials I ever went to and I was so nervous because as a country netballer I didn’t know anyone. Mum and Dad were always so helpful and willing to take me to Melbourne and give me opportunities. “If I had any advice for young netballers it would be for them to take every opportunity they get.”

Rebecca’s profile: Nickname: Bec Height: 186cm

Career Highlights:

ANZ Premiership 2008 (NSW Swifts) and 2013 (Adelaide Thunderbirds), Silver Medal at the Delhi Common-wealth Games with the Australian Netball Team in 2010. Netball Goals: To win an ANZ Championship with the Firebirds and be selected in the Australian Diamonds for the World Cup in 2015.

Training Tip for Young Players:

Key to being a good defender is reading the play.

Best thing about playing Netball:

Hanging out with great team mates whilst keeping fit and healthy.

Bec is now on track to achieve her goal of winning an ANZ Championship, playing with the Queensland Firebirds next Sunday. The ANZ Championship Grand Final remains the biggest domestic netball game in the world, attracting unprece-dented crowds, interest and entertain-ment, which this year includes Australian singer-songwriter Dami Im performing at pre-game and half-time. The Firebirds won the right to host the Grand Final following a 55-44 victory over the Swifts in the Conference Final two weeks ago at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. The 2015 ANZ Championship Grand Final between the Mission Queensland Firebirds and NSW Swifts is on Sunday 21 June at Brisbane Entertainment Centre at 12.10pm (AEST). Don’t miss a minute of action with the 2015 ANZ Championship Grand Final broadcast live on FOX SPORTS, ONE and

Netball Live app in Australia.

No doubt Grandparents, Linton and Val Mills and Uncle Alan & Aunty Denise Leed and family are feeling

very proud.

Increase of Theft

Related Offences Over the past six weeks, offences involving theft have increased both in the town of Pyramid Hill and the surround-ing farming properties. Most of these thefts have not been reported to the local police. Reporting of incidents help police establish patterns of offending and can assist in the early apprehension of offenders. Any future incidents of theft, whether it be of minimal value, please contact S/C Brett JOHNSON on 5455 7000. If S/C JOHNSON is not at the station please leave a short message on the police station answering machine and I will contact you as soon as I can. I also ask everyone to be extra vigilant and if any suspicious activities are observed please contact 000 in the first instant. It is often a report of suspicious activity that helps the police to arrest offenders.

Bowling Club Annual

Meeting Report The dulcet sounds of the beautiful rain drops dancing on the roof top gave an atmosphere of calm and enthusiasm to the Annual Meeting of the Pyramid hill Bowling Club last Monday night. Regard-less of the damp conditions, there was a very strong turnout of members. The evening began with the President, Marie N., delivering the Annual report which focussed on the achievements of the Club as well as individuals and small teams over the 2014-15 year. Social highlights and the signifi-cant number of general improvements made to the grounds and buildings were featured in the report. The successful year was accredited to the cooperative and extensive contributions by Club members who all played their parts in various manner and degrees to benefit this sporting body and to ensure that we offer a safe, welcoming and healthy environment for our patrons. Special thanks was attributed to the Board Members who so expertly managed small working groups in specific areas. The financial report indicated that the Club is in a healthy position even though many funds had been poured back into the projects undertaken. Much of the financial success is a result of the generous sponsorship received. Reports were also received from the various Sub-committees before all positions were declared vacant and elections were held for roles of responsibility for the coming twelve months. The following nominations were accepted and declared: President: Marie Noelker Vice President: Lionel Mann Secretary: Marie Scott Treasurer: Lionel Mann Bar Managers: Allan Fidler & Marie Noelker Catering Committee: Nola Newstead & Kate Wood

The team hit the front early and stayed in front. Tony Pearson turned defence into attack and Rowan Broad was everywhere, resulting in a three goal win and a grand final play off against the Singapore Sharks. The Sharks came out hard with some big hits and great skills and at half time they were in front by 19 points. Bobby' Ting Tang' Gibson, offered to put the boots on and repeat his heroics of the Pyramid Hill Reserves 1974 premiership when he kicked the winning goal. Bobby however, was over-ruled by team manager Jim Hoban, due to legal and insurance worries, plus it was his shout. The first 30 seconds of the second half saw Bulldogs full forward Stu Cooper take a towering mark and goaled followed by two great running goals from Brad Madden. After that the floodgates opened, the Singapore team didn't score at all in the second half and the Pyramid Bulldogs ran away with the game and ended up winning by 23 points to take home the championship and bring the cup back to Pyramid Hill. A tired and emotional coach Anthony 'Herbie' Hoban, was almost lost for words especially by the end of the night. The team stuck to the game plan which was to “out score the opposition" he said. He also thanked the many supporters and helpers who made the trip over and said recruiting and fundraising for next year has already

started .

Bali Masters

The Darwin Bulldogs Bali Nines over 35’s team competed on the Queen’s Birthday weekend along with 21 other teams from across Asia and Australia to see who would be crowned champions. The Bulldogs suffered a blow early on when due to an overzealous and intrusive cavity search by custom officials at Bali airport, full forward Graeme Linklater sustained an injury and was out of the carnival. The tournament kicked off with three games on Friday which the side had to win all three to play in finals on the Saturday. First game was a tight affair against the Jakarta Bintangs which the Bulldogs won by 4 points. Graham 'Garbo' Ballis showed the form which has several Goulburn Valley teams trying to lure him out of retirement. Next game was against the Singapore Sharks which they won by two goals due to Jayson Carroll and Bruce McCahon being impassable in the backline. The final game was against WA side, the Northern Warriors, and the boys put it together and won by21 points in a good team effort. Saturday morning the team arrived fresh and ready to go, mainly because the Moon boys -Bruce, Natto and Matt stayed out all night going to every nightclub in Kuta making sure everyone obeyed the team curfew. A win against the Wembley Magpies from Perth would see the Bulldogs play off in the grand final.
