Wednesday 12 September 2018 Issue No 28Hello everyone,
It was a fantastic start to the week, with Create '18 being an amazing celebration
of our school community's creativity and artistic skills. The hard work of all the
staff to get the GP Hall looking like an art gallery was well above and beyond the
normal expectations, with interactive, unique and individual pieces from every
student from Kinder to Grade 6 creating a wonderful event that many people
attended from local schools, old scholars and the local extended families. Thank
you to everyone who attended and shared their feedback.
Many of you will receive your child's NAPLAN results this week if they are in
Grades 3 or 5. These reports are issued by ACARA who administer the NAPLAN
tests. If you have any questions or queries about the report you receive please
feel free to contact the school office.
From Friday I will be on leave with my family until the start of Term 4. Lisa
Nichols has been appointed principal while I am on leave and I know that she will
ensure that we finish the term in the positive and productive way that we have
worked all year.
When we resume in Term 4 we will start our process of enrolling new
Kindergarten students so please ensure all the relevant enrolments are in, while
we will also look at the class structures and groupings for next year. This is an
approach that is based on the best outcomes for all students and once we have
confirmed all of these aspects and resolved our staffing we will share the
information with our community.

Triathlon Schools Challenge
The Triathlon Schools Challenge will be held on the 23rd of November
2018. Students in grade 3-6 are invited to participate in this event. Entry
forms and information sheets will be sent home with interested students
this Thursday the 6th of September. Entry forms must be returned to the
school office no later than Friday 14 September. Please return
your entry form with the correct money to the office.
The aims of the Schools Triathlon Challenge are:
1. To help promote active and healthy lifestyle choices to students.
2. To provide a pathway for students to become engaged in physical
activity.
3. To provide students with an opportunity to undertake an achievable
personal challenge.
Participation is the foundation of this event and students will be
encouraged to be involved regardless of current fitness level, ability,
previous experience or preferred sport.
Students will come to appreciate the sense of achievement that comes
with the challenge of completing a Triathlon.
This is a fantastic event; I look forward to working with students involved.
If you have any questions about the event please contact me or visit the
website for further information: www.schoolstriathlonchallenge.com
Soccer
With only one game left to go for this season, I hope everyone involved has enjoyed
their year. Have fun at your last game (especially the U12s!)
After 5 years of running Mt Stuart Soccer, it is time to hand over the reins. If you
are interested in taking on this role, please email me at
[email protected] - it doesn't have to be one person, preferably a few
volunteers would make it easier. An instruction manual will be provided.

Respectful Schools, Respectful Relationships
“Respectful, caring and reciprocal relationships support learning outcomes”
The SRC are continuing with their War on Waste. Our first whole school
challenge was a suggestion from Nellie in Grade 2 – and it was fantastic to
note that most students took the challenge to heart and gave it their best. Congratulations, Nellie!
This fortnight’s challenge is for each class to source a compost bucket for
their classroom. Some classes are already doing this well, but as we have had
issues with ants we need to source buckets with tight sealing lids – so if you have one of these at home that you can spare, please send it in.
We also would like to encourage everyone to use the compost as over 19.5
kgs of our overall 52kg of landfill in our waste audit was uneaten food. Please
note though that we are not encouraging meat in the compost as this attracts
rats. Each class will soon be nominating a VIC – Very Important Composter
to help ensure that the compost gets emptied daily. VIC’s will be publicised
in the newsletter, photos will be displayed and volunteers will be formally
recognised at our next whole school assembly. Another of our keen Grade
2 environmentalists suggested that we need to have a compost available
outside during break times so we are also working on this. Students also
suggested that we encourage parents not to send too much food with their
children so that it is not wasted. Also, it would be great if parents
encouraged their children to bring home uneaten food; we even found two
tins of unopened tuna in our audit!
We trialled the Yellow Bin on the netball court at lunch on Friday and before
the monitors even got there, one of the bins was already contaminated with
a toasted sandwich. We really need to work together to train our students
how to separate landfill from recycling so that we can ensure that we don’t
contaminate our recycling.
On the 18th September our whole staff and the SRC will be watching an
episode on The War on Waste after school. We will look at what else we
can do to make a difference. It is a pleasure to work with such a motivated
and passionate group of teachers and students and I look forward to sharing
more of our successes.
