Clash: 3-D Design and Utility Investigation
TxDOT designing roadways in 3-D
– Need for 3-D Utility Investigations increases
TxDOT Districts have to know what they need
– Limits of the Utility Investigation
» Assumptions Document
– Entire project limits or areas/specific utilities in areas of high risk
Result: Enhances AMA, visualization of conflicts
– Through Microstation File or Google Earth

CRP had a level C/D SUE already completed from the advanced planning stage
CRP obtained a contract to acquire level A/B SUE with a 3-D deliverable to be utilized with OpenRoads
– Designer, Utility Coordinator, and Contract PM determined the level A/B needs prior to work authorization using the level C/D SUE
3-D model of the SUE was developed in SUDA by the consultant
3-D SUE was referenced directly into the designer’s 3-D roadway model
Cross Sections cut from the designer’s model would show proposed roadway and existing utilities
– There was a reduced effort for providing cross sections for Utility Coordination with use of 3-D SUE and OpenRoads

A Look into the Future
Building upon the successes and lessons learned
– The next step in this process is…
• Obtaining As-Built data on adjusted lines
– Incorporating As-Built and Utility Investigation data into the construction plans
– BNSF process
• Utility data repository within new utility management system
