Welcome Dear Members of the ONE TO ONE Community,

The success achieved in 2017-18 has been remarkable. We expanded our program reach and now operate in 230 schools across British Columbia - an increase from last year’s 187. Thanks to our dedicated and talented team of volunteers, we have been able to support thousands of children develop the skills and confidence to read.

The year has also been one of great change.

Our Executive Director, Josée Thibault, handed the reins to Carol Neuman in June. During Josée’s brief but productive stay, she established a monthly donor program, developed our first annual giving campaign, and led the 2018 Spelling Bee which raised over $59,000. Josée also expedited the move of our office (just down the street, but a full move nonetheless). Our sincere thanks to Josée for her leadership and her passion for the vision of ONE TO ONE. In October, we hired our first Communications Coordinator and welcomed more liaisons to our team. These new additions are helping grow and support our community of stakeholders: students, volunteers and donors. For the first time ever, ONE TO ONE’s office did not shut down for the summer. Instead, our full-time staff tweaked and reinvigorated our volunteer recruitment and programming plans and as a result, we started the school year strong. This marked an exciting shift for ONE TO ONE as we gear up to better serve our communities across the province. With this added capacity, we are better positioned to sustainably grow our program and realize our vision that every struggling reader in the province receives the support they need.

As we look forward to the 2018-19 school year, we are prioritizing expansion of our support to our existing program schools. We are also enhancing our tutor recruitment strategy and broadening the program’s offering to include new books and literacy games, as well as books with Indigenous content.

ONE TO ONE relies on the support of the community to bring our program to early learners across British Columbia. What we do simply would not be possible without you, our wonderful volunteers, donors and supporters.

As you peek through this annual report and see some of the highlights of the past year, we hope you will feel a sense of pride in being part of an organization that sees literacy as a cornerstone to a successful life.

ONE TO ONE’s Board of Directors guides a small, passionate team in Vancouver which is supported by a dedicated team of liaisons in each area where ONE TO ONE operates in BC.

About ONE TO ONE

ONE TO ONE is a unique children’s literacy program which provides one-to-one tutoring to elementary school children who struggle with reading. Our trained volunteer tutors work in schools during school hours with students identified by their teachers as needing a boost in their literacy skills.

Children chosen for the program receive no additional resource support from the schools. They are the students who would otherwise fall through the cracks in the system. Each student spends approximately 30 minutes, twice a week, with a trained ONE TO ONE volunteer tutor in the school during normal school hours. Not only does the program develop the students’ literacy skills, but it allows the students to practice reading in a safe environment, where it is okay to take risks and make mistakes, and they develop relationships with their tutors that foster self-confidence.

There is no cost to students or schools and we are funded completely by grants and private donations.

The need for ONE TO ONE

Literacy is not just about being able to read a book. Low literacy rates can have far-reaching and devastating effects well beyond a child’s school years.

Wow! She is reading to me now and the improvement is startling! The change I see is like night and day from the beginning of the year.

Parent of ONE TO ONE student, Balfour, BC

This is a wonderful program! Thank you so much for providing these patient and kind-hearted tutors to help our students.

Principal and ONE TO ONE Coordinator, Vancouver, BC

This is a small town with few resources. A child running up to an adult volunteer in a public situation with joy, and exuberance, shouting out Hello! When are you going to hear me read again, I have finished a whole book since last time! is incredibly rewarding and inspiring, and above all, hopeful.

Teacher and ONE TO ONE Coordinator, Valemount, BC

A child’s Grade 3 reading level can predict their school success more accurately than any other variable, such as a child’s first language or their parents’ income and education.

75% of British Columbians with high literacy rates describe themselves as being in excellent or very good health, compared to only 30% of those with low literacy. (IALSS, 2003)

I am so thankful to everyone who makes ONE TO ONE happen. My life has changed because of the program. It’s great to know it’s still helping students today.

Volunteers

ONE TO ONE volunteer tutors give up their own time every week to improve children’s literacy across BC. We also rely on our school coordinators and school staff who take time out of their busy days to coordinate ONE TO ONE in their schools.

In May, we held volunteer appreciation teas across the Lower Mainland to recognize the dedication of our tutors and school coordinators. In addition to the awards given to volunteers for three and five years of service, we recognized eight volunteers for an incredible 10 years of volunteering with ONE TO ONE and one amazing volunteer for her 20 years of service.

I can honestly say, that while I hope that my tutoring has helped the children, it has certainly enhanced my life.

It has been an absolute wonder to deal with such delightful young children on a weekly basis.

At the end of this school year two of my students presented me with flowers. You made my life better, one girl said.Me too, her sister chimed in.
