Annual Halloween Party October 23, 2010 By Liz Green

Our annual Hallow-een party was held again at J and Kay Jennings. They have the perfect party room in their house. For the 1st half hour we just talked and talked. Then we got down to the food. We had a great varie-ty as usual, salads, pulled pork sand-wiches, chicken broc-coli casserole, chips and all kinds of dips, candy, and to die for chocolate cake and pumpkin pie. We ate till our stom-achs were content then we played a game where J had looked up British car names and put them on a piece of paper. He called out letters like bingo and we crossed out the letters on the car names until someone was able to cross off all their

letters. Those that won were: John Green, Mike Cady, and Gary Lindstrom. The prizes were bobble head dolls in a Halloween cup. Liz Green and Mike Cady also won a prize for sitting in chairs that were covered with pumpkin fabric. They got Halloween toilet paper. Those in attendance were: J and Kay Jennings, John and Liz Green, Ed and Michelle Higbee (J & Kay’s daughter and son-in-law), Gary and Sandy Lindstrom, Bud and Betty Merritt, Barbara Smithen, Dan and Kim Neilson, Dave and Debi Hobson, and Mike Cady (Susie was at her sister’s birthday par-ty). We had a great time and missed those who were not able to come.

Member Profile: Dan and Kim Neilson By Liz Green

Dan was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He graduated from Cottonwood High School and then went to LDS Business College where he got his Asso-ciates Degree. Kim was born and raised Rich-field, UT. She graduated from South Sevier High School and also went to LDS Business College. This is not where they met however. They met through mutual friends in Rich-field. Dan is an air traffic controller, guiding planes anywhere from Salt Lake to the Canadian border. He will be retir-ing in 3 years and 8 days from Oct 23rd when I talked to him at the Halloween party. With this type of work it is a mandatory retirement. Kim worked for the Jordan School Dis-trict in the accounting department until it was split into another dis-

trict. She now does the same thing but for the Canyon School District. They have 3 girls, 2 and ½ grand children. The ½ grand

child will be born in April 2011. They have a ½ Siberian ½ Mexican Wolf dog for a pet. His name is Scamper. They inherited him from their daughter’s friend that was to be for few months stay and has turned out to be 4 years. Their Jaguar is a 1968, red, 2 plus 2, E-type. It has an en-gine problem which is waiting for retire-ment, to be fixed.

They like Mexican food; however, Dan says he really likes most foods. They own a sail boat that is at the Great Salt Lake in the summer and their home in the win-ter. They love to sail. Dan also loves sport-ing clay shooting and photography. He is looking forward to spending time doing

both when he retires.

Dan and Kim are great jag club members. They are always very supportive of club activities. We appreciate their support and are always happy to socialize with them.

Steven L. Chandler 1944—2010

Ed. Note: Steve Chandler was a long time WMJR member who is sadly missed by all who knew him. He and Jaylene owned an XK150. The following obituary ran in the Salt Lake Tribune October 3 to 8. The club made a donation in his memory to the Huntsman Cancer Insti-tute — Liz Green. A celebration of the life of Steven L. Chandler will be held Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., in the Chapel at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. Steve died on September 30, 2010, after a cou-rageous battle with cancer. He joins those who predeceased him: his parents, Harry (Hal) William and Helen Merrill Chandler, his in-laws James (Jay) and Genevieve Curtis. He was born in Salt Lake City, May 21, 1944, and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Steve is survived by Jaylene Curtis Chandler, his sweetheart,

friend, partner and wife of 47 years; his son, Steven Curtis Chandler (Melissa) of Salt Lake City his daughter, Merrill Chandler Sutherland (William) of Campbell, California; and his adored grandchildren: Chandler Anne, William (Liam) Sutherland, and Steven Cole Chandler. He leaves his family: Bill

and Connie Mueser of Moraga, Califor-nia; Craig and Sharon Chandler of St. George, Utah; and Ellen Chandler of Boise, Idaho; Don and Gayle Miller of East Wenatchee, Washington; and Nancy Curtis Birdsley of Sandy, Utah. Steve graduated from Highland High School, where he was on the wrestling and track teams and earned recognition as an All-State linebacker on the football team. He attended the University of Utah and enjoyed his life-long member-ship in the Crimson Club. Family was the most important facet of Steve's life. He was a dear, generous and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. Steve fell in love with Jaylene in the 8th grade and shortly after high school graduation they were mar-ried. Their children, Steve ad Merrill were the joy of his life until he experi-

enced grandchildren. He loved to spend weekends with the family boating, camp-ing or skiing. Christmas was a holiday of particular importance; Steve insisted everyone gather at his house for the spe-cial day. In 1972, Steve's father-in-law, Jay Cur-tis, asked him to join L. N. Curtis & Sons, a fire equipment distributor started by Jay's father in 1929. Over the next 37 years he worked with passion and com-mitment to grow the company. He rose to the position of Sr. Vice President and Owner. He expanded the company into new regions and oversaw branch offices. But the most endearing element of his career was the friendships created with the many wonderful members of the fire services. He took great pride in mentor-ing young employees and seeing them develop into productive individuals. The people of L. N. Curtis & Sons were a big part of his family. Steve cared for them deeply. Steve was an automobile junkie with a lifelong passion for cars. He bought his first car, a 1950 Ford convertible, using

money from a paper route when he was 13 and hid it in the garage down the street, until his mom heard the "news" and sold the car. He bought cars; he sold cars; he fixed cars; he drove cars. He enjoyed antique cars, hot-rods, and vehicles of every vintage. One learned to never fall in love with Steve's cars, because it might be gone by the next visit. When Steve pursued an activity, he invested 100%. He loved horses and spent time as president of the American Saddlebred Association. He enjoyed skiing the beautiful Wasatch Moun-tains and trained to be an official for the World Cup and a gate judge for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He took up the game of tennis at the age of 40 and maintained a competitive level of 4.0 into his late fifties. He loved motorcycling with Jaylene and was able to ride through much of the United States on his Harley. His collection of scooters, boats, motorcycles, snow mobiles, tractors, and 4-wheelers were always the best, and meticulously maintained.

Steve spent his final years fulfilling a lifetime dream that was inspired by his father, ranching. He purchased the Low-er Blacks Fork River Ranch in Ft. Bridg-er, Wyoming. He and Jaylene built a beautiful home that captures the peace of the plains and the serenity of the Uinta Mountains. He worked hard to clear brush, upgrade fences, and improve the grounds. He found a new calling as a cowboy and the "Jolly" rancher. Steve Chandler approached life with op-timism, energy, confidence and enthusi-asm. He said, "I have a wife, two chil-dren, three grandchildren and a dog. What more could a man want?" He leaves a grieving family, immediate and extended; a legacy of an abiding work ethic, of love, compassion and integrity, and a multitude of friends and coworkers who were enriched by having him in their orbit. We are grateful for the friends, and Doc-tors at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the kind care of Love Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Huntsman Cancer Institute, or The Shriners Hospitals for Children.
