I remember several changes in this church – sanctuary remodeled, new parsonage, and new fel- lowship hall. Some of them were a necessity, like when the wind blew the roof off the educational building. Some were of our own choosing – like building the new fellow- ship hall. I remember other changes, too, like moving wor- ship from 11:00 to 10:45 so we could beat the Quakers to lunch. I remember when you HAD to dress up and come to church in your “Sunday best.” I remember when we could “dress down” in the summers, and how wonderful that was to be able to forego the panty hose and wear pants. Today our clothing decisions do not come from so much a decision but a way of life. We can wear jeans or pants all the time. A lot of that came with the preacher that wore the crazy shirts (Dana McKim) and some of it is just life in general. We decided it was more important for people to come to church than stay home because they did not have nice clothes. Another change happened in January. We added a casual service at 10:45, and it has brought in new people. Anything that encourages more people to attend church is good, but it has left a big void in the sanctuary. Someone called me to serve on a committee to suggest solutions to this problem, and it was a very positive experience for me. Everyone there wanted what was for the good of the church, and people voiced their opinions in a nice way and we respected all opinions. We decided to try an alternate schedule for the summer, and I think it is an excellent idea. First of all, all 3 church services have to change times. The services always revolved around Sunday School, which we wanted to keep doing. We wanted to somehow combine the 2 more traditional worship services without making anyone upset. So we decided to meet at 9:00. This way the 8:30 service people come in 30 minutes later than usual and the 10:45 people come in 30 minutes earlier than the usual Sunday School time. One service at 9:00 with the choir singing and Denise on piano and me on organ seemed to be a good compromise. Sunday School will be at 10:00, right after the 9:00 service. Then the casual or contemporary service will be at 11:00 in the fellowship hall after Sunday School as usual. This is a true compromise because all 3 services have to change times. This should solve 2 problems. First the 9:00 service should have more people in the pews than the 8:30 and 10:45 independently, which will be good for us to see. Second it will alleviate our preacher running from service to service, which I doubt any other preacher would do. Each service can have the full attention of the preach- er, without him running out or having to wait for him. He will be able to stay for the whole worship service each time. (continued to page 3)

A Change is Coming

No one minds change – unless they have to do something differently! I remember several changes in this church – sanctuary remodeled, new parsonage, and new fel-lowship hall. Some of them were a necessity, like when the wind blew the roof off the educational building. Some were of our own choosing – like building the new fellow-ship hall. A Change is Coming (continued from page 1)

When will we ever be together as a church? We suggested whenever there was a 5th Sunday we could meet together in the fellowship hall for breakfast and a combined Sunday School lesson for the adults during the Sunday School time of 10:00. Who wants to change? No one! Who wants our church to grow? Everyone. We are trying our new schedule for the summer months of July and August. I personally am a late riser, and the hardest thing I do all day is get out of the bed, so coming to church at 9:00 will not be MY favorite thing. But guess what? Archdale United Methodist Church is not there to serve ME. I am very willing to get up 30 minutes early to see if it helps the church. We are trying it for 2 months. Guess what else? I might like getting out of church at 11:00! We know that this will be more difficult for some people, but remember – it is a trial schedule, not a forever schedule. You never know – we might like it! I will see you at church July 3rd at 9:00! Love, Cheryl
