Dear Owl Club Supporter:
As our fall and winter sports swing into full gear, I want to express my gratitude for
your support of Rice student–athletes through attendance at our games and gifts to
the Owl Club. Your generosity enhances the Rice experience for 350-plus student–
athletes competing in 16 varsity sports and enables them to grow as individuals and
leaders through academic rigor and athletic competition. The future is bright for Rice
Athletics, and your continued support through the Owl Club remains critical for us to
realize our potential.
The Owl Club report was developed for our donors, friends and fans to highlight some
of the great accomplishments of our student–athletes and athletics department over
the course of the 2013–14 season. Some of the highlights include: five conference
championships (football, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, men’s golf and
baseball), 235 Owls on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and launching
a new vision for Rice Athletics.
The new vision is ambitious, yet realistic, and based on four pillars: athletic
competitiveness, academic success, life education and achievement, and
Rice values. At Rice, we want to win conference championships and perennially finish
in the top 25 of all sports, while graduating our student–athletes at or above the
university graduation rate with the leadership skills that will enable them to
excel personally and professionally after graduation. We also will win with integrity
and honor — the Rice way!
Financial stability will be critical to the fulfillment of our vision, and growing the Owl
Club is one of the goals that will be instrumental in elevating each of our 16 programs
to levels of unprecedented success. The university is committed to this goal and will
continue to support athletics at or above its current level even as Owl Club and ticket
revenues grow.
My first year as athletics director has brought me into contact with people who
believe, as I do, that Rice can field a championship athletics program at a world-class
institution of higher learning. We have great opportunities ahead of us, and I look
forward to working with our student–athletes, coaches, athletics staff and supporters
to realize them. Thank you again for your continued support of Rice Athletics and
generous gifts to the Owl Club.
Go Owls!
