Breeders are encouraged to enter fleeces in Fiber Fusion’s Wool

and Fleece Show. It’s a great opportunity to get valuable infor-

mation on your fiber animals as well as the opportunity to sell fleec-

es to interested buyers.

Judging takes place on Saturday, Oct 21. Both breeders and visi-

tors are able to observe the judging up close and hear the judge's

comments as the fleeces are evaluated.

All types of fiber will be judged including wool, mohair, cashmere, pygora, alpaca, llama, & angora.

Our 2017 Fiber Judge - Dawn Lantz

The sale will include both judged fleeces and unjudged fleeces of all types. While both judged and unjudged fleeces will be available, buyers benefit by knowing that the fleeces from the ‘Wool & Fleece Show’ have been subjected to critical evaluation.

Fleece Sale OPENS Saturday afternoon and continues throughout the weekend, starting at 8:00 am on Sunday.

Fleece Sale Hours

3:00 pm - 6:00 pm Saturday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday

Visit the Display Hall for fleece judging, viewing and sale.

We begin the lesson plan with a short discussion on color theory and will play with web-based programs to design our own colorways. These programs are free and available for smart phones, ipads, tablets, and laptops, so please bring yours along. If you don’t own any of these, I can provide you with something to use in class. We will dye spinners rov-ing, top, and fleece staples in this class using a minimum of three dye methods, which will constitute roughly ¾ of the class time. The remainder of the workshop is devoted to us-ing my pre-dyed fibers to review methods in drafting, blending, combing, fracking and folding, plying and using your luscious colors when you get home. Participants are en-couraged to bring spinning wheels and drop spindles for this fun exercise on how to best use what you've learned in class and the fibers that you'll be taking home with you.

All in all, this is designed as a 3-fold dye class which includes: 1) web-based designing, 2) actual hands-on dyeing, and then 3) spinning using techniques for drafting and blending.

Instructor: Kay Harradine Cost: $105 + $30 material fee

This basic bowl-shaped basket is an excellent introduction to the art of wicker weav-ing. The material is natural and dyed “reed” from the rattan vine. Learn the basic parts of the basket, how to weave a round base, add a foot, insert spokes, upsett, and wale! Choose a colorful pattern of stripes or swirls or checkerboard executed in twining, for the sides of your basket. The completed project is finished with a rolled border and is big enough for fruit or rolls at your table. More advanced students are welcome and can learn more elaborate weaves – something for everyone in this class.

Delicious food offerings are available!

The Caffeine Drip will provide coffee and latte service Saturday from 7

am to 3 pm and on Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm. Located in the Commer-

cial Building.

Random Acts of Food will be serving delicious lunch items starting at 10 am each day. Look

for the black food truck behind the vendor building!

Pin looms have been around since the Bakelite days in the 1930's: the weave-it, loomette, and jiffy looms are still found at garage sales and thrift stores while the Zoom loom has introduced a new generation to this fun, fast weaving technique. We start with standard weaving methods on weave-its, then show how to modify it for a woven fringe. Then we look at bias weaving and woven triangles on these looms. The larger cousin to these is the potholder loom -- which can be used for more than just potholders, since we can use it just like its smaller cousins. Let's continue by exploring weaving with thicker yarns on potholder looms. We wrap up with a novel pin loom, the Danish scarf loom, and show how it is used to make a long continuous length -- its methods can be adapted to the potholder loom and 6" pin looms as well.

Instructor: Sarah Anderson Cost: $60 + $6 material fee

Even though every handspun skein of yarn is beautiful and usable (without technical perfec-tion) you may have wondered just what could have been done differently to make your skein just a little bit better.

As knitters gain experience, they learn to “read” their knitting and understand better what they did. It’s pretty cut and dried with knitting but spinning is a different story. Just how do you know if your skein is under-plied, over-plied, could have used less twist in the singles, or more twist? How can you know after the fact which direction your singles were spun? Have you ever looked at a skein and asked, “What did I do?” and “Why does it look like this?”.

Bring your (not perfect) handspun skeins to this class and we’ll address your concerns with the goal of understanding not only what makes a good yarn for your purpose but also how to “read” yarn to see what you did as you were spinning. We’ll cover common problems and practice a little bit on our wheels or spindles to cement in lessons learned. This is a student driven class with a lot of Q&A so is a great class not only for spinners who want to increase their skill but also for budding yarn judges.

Instructor: Kim Perkins Cost: $60 + $20 material fee

In this hands-on class, Kim Perkins will demonstrate how to create textured art batts that are wonderful to spin. The goal of carding is to create a batt that spins up easily and gives you more color and fiber choices as well as more control of your finished product.

This is the perfect class for the the person who wants to learn to crochet or just brush up on their skills. In this class, you will learn to make three basic stitches, Chain stitch, Single Crochet and Double Crochet, all while making a scarf. You will go home with a good portion of the scarf made and the skills needed to complete it.

Instructor: Anna Anderson Cost: $70 + $25 material fee

This is a fun class where the students will learn to create a very fine, almost transparent scarf, using a sandwich method of wet felting to interlock colors and designs between very thin layers of Alpaca fiber. Students will also learn special techniques to reduce fatigue on wrists and hand. Students will take home a finished scarf and tips and tech-niques to create many more. NOTE – this is a four-hour class.

Instructor: Barbara Seeler Cost: $60 + $20 material fee

What now! You have the perfect fleece, how do you get it to a spinnable form? You will learn how to wash (if needed), pick (if needed), and techniques to prepare roving from fleece locks. Preparation tools will include hand carding, English wool combing, and drum carding. Blending techniques for color and/or texture on all equipment will be explored. Spinning techniques related to each preparation will be discussed.

Instructor: Lisa Ellis Cost: $50 (no material fee)

Brioche is a series of yarn overs and slipped stitches to create a reversible, lofty and double-thick fabric, ideal for scarves, hats and blankets. Samples of the technique will be created in class and two patterns will be provided by the instructor for creating com-plete Brioche projects at home. Brioche knitting comes with new knitting terminology, gauge, fixing mistakes, counting row challenges and the need for the most elastic cast on and bind off's- all worth learning! We start and end with the backward loop cast on and the sewn bind off and practice basic 1 color and 2 color brioche.

Twining is a Swedish technique, in which both ends of the same ball of yarn are alterna-tively knit, producing a firm, wind and rain resistant fabric that's ideal for mittens, hats, ski gaiters and fingerless gloves. We'll cast on the 2 yarns, work a twined ribbing (so to speak) and finish with twined knitting. It's magnificent in a variegated yarn and is guar-anteed to keep your head, hands and feet warm! Ironically, it also uses less yarn. Tricks of the trade will also be taught. It's a weekend project and the perfect gift.

Instructor: Leslie Hoex Cost: $60 + $10 material fee

Students are to bring their own carded batts or carded art batts* to class and will take these to the spinning wheel and learn to “spin outside the box.” Student will then learn to ply their singles into beautiful skeins of textured yarn. Leslie will demonstrate how to spin a simple single ply with a mix of fiber, how to incorporate locks and how to core-spin. After that she will show you several ways to ply your single such as spiral ply, loops, and stacks. Lastly, Leslie will explain to you the best way to set the different types of yarn you have spun and the different ways you can use your beautiful art yarn.

Instructor: Marisa Dobiash Cost: $60 + $15 material fee

This class will explore making a felted fabric scarf with natural fibers, silk and dyed meri-no wool. You will learn to felt these fibers into a base of silk gauze which will make a soft, warm scarf you will be proud to wear or give as a gift.

Free demonstrations will be on-going throughout

the weekend and will cover a variety of fiber related

topics.

The demo schedule will be available at the Welcome Desk and will be posted online.

Forty years ago most of the fiber spun by handspinners came from local sheep. We brought it home in big bags and started washing.... Today we have available to us an incredible variety of not only washed and prepared sheep’s wool but also almost every spinable animal fiber you can imagine. We call many of these fibers “exotics”. In class we’ll spin a few that come from far off places...Yak, Cashmere and Camel. We’ll also try out our local exotic, Bison.

We’ll spin examples of these types of fiber trying ways to draft that will bring success. We’ll talk about fibers that blend or ply well with exotics to increase yardage from these precious fibers.

The pursuit of crazy things to do on spindles fuels part of my passion for these portable tools. So if you like having even spinners stop and ask you "what are you doing?" as you wander around the Fiber Fusion NW marketplace with your newest spindle, come and learn my favorite spindle tricks. We will start with some basic tricks, such as starting without a leader and removing thick spots. Then we will take on the challenge of long-draw on a spindle, yes you can! If having one spindle is your goal, but spindle weight is your issue, we will explore how to modify your spindle to get the spindle you want with-out harming your spindle.

If efficiency keeps you from your spindles, we will explore the wind-on and how to make it faster (and cooler looking, of course!). Then, we'll explore making and using a Navajo plying ball, bet you've never heard of those before! The real conversation-piece is throw-plying; a sure attention-getter. We'll wrap up with a Turkish trick that will have you packing your favorite Turkish spindle that never used to leave home for your next trip without worrying about a broken shaft ever again.

Instructor: Lisa Ellis Cost: $60 (no material fee)

Every knitter wants to learn how to knit socks. Socks is to knitting as ballet is to dance, it's the core of knitting. Once you can knit socks, you can knit anything! We'll learn to knit socks the traditional European way, using 5 double pointed needles AND without a pattern! We'll discuss basic sock construction and the simple math behind the sock. We'll walk through the process step by step from the sock cuff to the toe graft-ing! Once you take this class, you may never need another sock pattern again!

In this fun and fast paced. workshop, students will be able to choose between mittens or booties for their project.

We’ll learn the primary methods used in flat felting – which is really a misnomer. Flat felting is anything that is not felted in the washing machine or needle-felted. You can make fitted booties and slippers, mittens, hats, purses, and landscape tapestries using whatever color combinations you’d like. This workshop is truly for the creative hand and heart and it utilizes methods that have evolved over thousands of years by countless civilizations.

Splint weaving uses flat weaving elements to create lightweight practical baskets. One set of basic weaving skills can be used to make round, square oval or even heart shaped baskets. A lashed border adds a sturdy rim and simple wrapped handles can be add-ed. The weaving material is natural flat reed with dyed materials for accent. Make two small or one larger basket in class.

Your basic three-strand braid can be used to create a lovely rug or pad from wool roving. These types of rugs date back to colonial days. In this class we'll braid, felt, and sew a mug rug to learn how it's done. This is a great way to use medium and coarse wools to create useful goods. No prior spinning, knitting, or felting skills are expected; if you al-ready know how to braid, that's great! These are made from wool roving by drafting, braiding, felting, and stitching.

We step through the process and by the end of the workshop, you will have a braided mug rug. Fiber and tools (they're basic) will be supplied.

Instructor: Kathy Martin Cost: $60+ $25 material fee

We will demonstrate how to use a triple picker to pick kid mohair locks and then spin from a handful of fluffy fiber. Triple pickers can be frightful looking and some say they will ruin your fine fibers. Used carefully and gently, pickers are a great tool to prep mo-hair especially. Spinning straight from the handful can create a thick/thin, straight/curly artsy yarn. The spinner will learn how to create this art yarn in a fun and stress-free envi-ronment.

We spend so much of our time spinning singles that plying the yarn can wind up being thought of as just a necessary nuisance. Plying, in reality is a very important part of mak-ing yarn. With plying comes balance and the opportunity to create different types of yarn from the same singles.

We’ll discuss twist (active, dormant and balance) and how the amount of twist in your singles and plied yarn affect the yarn’s hand and function. We’ll practice strategies for plying and make sample skeins that will bring you understanding and success.
