Welcome back to Term 3 After and extended break, it is great to be back at Waverley with our students and staff. It is an important time for our Year 12 students who will sit their Trial HSC Assessments in a few weeks. On the first day of term, the Waverley College Staff reflected on the questions “What does it mean to be Catholic?” and “What is my image of Jesus?” These are important questions to consider as adults within a community of faith. After viewing an excellent resource produced by the Catholic Education Office Sydney, staff engaged with a diverse panel including Michael Daly (State MP for Maroubra), Elsie Heiss (Aboriginal Catholic Ministry), Br Tony Leon (Marist VOLUME 36 NO. 18 20 JULY 2012 From the Headmaster IN THIS EDITION From the Director of Junior School .................................. 2 Spring Cocktail Party ........... 3 Next Week @ Waverley....... 3 Canteen Rosters .................. 3 Deputy Head’s Review ........ 4 School Fees Reminder ........ 4 Laptop Rules........................ 4 Curriculum News ................. 5 Sport Master’s Report .......... 6 Track & Field........................ 6 The Rugby Report ............... 7 Computer Skills Tests .......... 7 Careers Information ............. 8 Sunsuper Ride ..................... 8 Senior Sport Fixtures ........... 9 Junior School Fixtures ....... 10 Football Presentation Night 10 Senior Campus - Our Lady’s Mount: 131 Birrell Street Waverley NSW 2024 T. 02 9369 0600 F. 02 9389 1274 E. You will notice as you walk past the college that new bay windows have been installed on Level 2 of the Kenny Building which provide a much more transparent view of learning in these rooms. A Reminder About Co-Curricular Requirements I am very appreciative of the commitment made by students and parents to the co-curricular life of the College. As a College, we are proud of the achievements of all our teams. This dedication is illustrated by punctuality to training and fixtures, loyalty to teams, as well as fair play on and off the field. An important but often forgotten sign of dedication is the commitment of each student to learning in the classroom. A strong focus on sport should not lead to a lesser emphasis on learning. Another sign of commitment is organisation and forward planning. Earlier in the year, a letter was sent to all families in relation to requests for leave and exemptions from sport and co-curricular fixtures. Any request for leave from co-curricular must be addressed directly to me with at least two weeks notice. I would like to thank all parents for the way in which they have approached this issue during the first half of the year. Best wishes for a great term. 18th June, 2012

Dear Parents and Carers,

Warm greetings from the National Office of Edmund Rice Education Australia!

I write today to invite you to participate in the Professional Reflection and Review of the Deputy Headmaster of Waverley College, Mr Anthony Galletta.

The Professional Reflection and Review process is part of Edmund Rice Education Australia’s (EREA’s) strategy to affirm and support Senior Leaders in our schools and to assist them to develop their leadership potential. The process is also designed to assist EREA in a strategic approach to succession planning and to enable Senior Leaders in our schools to experience professional growth in their current role.

The process of Professional Reflection and Review will offer Senior Leaders the opportunity to be acknowledged and affirmed, to reflect on feedback from the school community, to engage in professional dialogue, and to approach the next phase of their professional lives with confidence and enthusiasm.

As part of the process a random sample of 20 per cent of the parent population of the College are invited to participate in an online survey. The survey has been developed by EREA National Office personnel in Melbourne who will manage the process and provide invaluable feedback to Anthony about his performance. Shortly, you will receive a request to participate in the online survey. Can I strongly encourage you to participate as a means of supporting Anthony in developing his leadership potential. Please note: all responses will remain strictly confidential.

In order for the surveys to be distributed, EREA will require your name and email address which will be accessed through the School. If you have any concerns about this aspect of the process can you please contact the Headmaster or you might like to contact me at the National Office of EREA on 03 94263216. I am responsible for managing the process of Professional Reflection and Review on behalf of EREA. The survey will be available online from Monday 16th July, 2012 until the close of business on Tuesday 24th July, 2012.

I would like to thank you in anticipation for your involvement in the process and support of Anthony in his role as Deputy Headmaster of Waverley College.

Yours sincerely,

Michael  Horsley  National  Manager  –  Education  Services EREA  National  Office,  Melbourne

Rules for use of laptops at schoolTerm 3 will see Year 10 students begin to use their laptops in the classroom and this is a good time for some reminders about the rules for use of laptops by the students of Years 7 & 10:•When the teacher wishes

to provide classroom instruction students are to close the lid of their laptop so they are not distracted.

•Students are not permitted to use their laptop on the way to school, before classes, or at recess or lunch times. By not using their laptop at these times we are able to conserve battery life for classroom use.

•The laptop is a learning device and not a game device.

•Students are not permitted to go to the library at lunch time and play games on any computer.

•A number of students have never backed up their laptop so they should initiate this at home as soon as possible.

•Students are not to use skype or other programs during the school day to contact other students in other classrooms.

•When students are at sports training they must leave their laptop in its bag at the Pavilion for safe keeping and collect it at the end of training.

•At this stage we request that students continue to use their school diary to write their homework down each day not just to place it on a ‘sticky note’ on their laptop.

We will meet with Year 7 and Year 10 in the near future to remind them of their responsibilities and I request that parents and carers remind their sons about these rules where necessary.MrAGallettaDeputy Headmaster

Curriculum News: A World of DistractionsStudy Skills Tip for July: Study and TechnologyDr. Larry Rosen, Professor of Psychology at CaliforniaStateUniversitypresentedattheYoungMinds Conference in Sydney last month. This month and next month’s newsletter items will be discussing some of the ideas he presented.Hisnewbook‘iDisorder:UnderstandingOurObsession with Technology and Overcoming Its HoldonUs’discusseschangesthatoccurtothebrain´s ability to process information and the ability to relate to the world due to daily consumption of media and use of technology. This obsession with technology can result in signs and symptoms of psychological disorders (which Dr. Rosen has labeled iDisorders) such as stress, sleeplessness, narcissism and a compulsive need to check-in with our technology. However Dr. Rosen is not anti-technology, far from it. Instead he argues that we need to become more aware of issues that can arise from over use of technology and implement strategies to deal with these. Self-awareness and a move towards restorative balance are essential.

Some of the ideas Dr. Rosen discusses are:• Ensure your child gets a full night’s sleep and

that mobile phones are switched off during the night. If a student wakes in the night and checkstheirphone, howeverbriefly, thiswillinterrupt the sleep patterns for that night and disrupt essential memory processing.

• Convene regular family dinners (3-4 times a week for 30-40 minutes) where technology is forbidden at the table – parents included! Dr. Rosen points to the fact that many parents are also obsessed with technology and are modeling these behaviours to their children, for example not paying full attention when their child is talking to them, instead answering email on their smart phone at the same time. Rosen believes we are massive self-interrupters and we are training our children that if something buzzes, beeps or vibrates, we should jump and immediately check to see if there is something we should attend to right now.

• Giventhepervasivenessoftechnologyinour lives as well as the fact that technology evokes high levels of mental activity, we need to start taking technology ‘time-outs’ to reset our brains and refresh our capacity to process information. It is important to recognise that the constant lure of multiple technologies and our obsession with them is overloading

our brain. If we want to avoid iDisorder and ensure our use of technology does not make us exhibit signs and symptoms of psychological disorders, then we need to reset our brain on a regular basis. You may decide to take a 10 minute break from technology every 2 hours or you may even decide to allocate at least one day a week where you focus your attention 100% on real life and shut off your technology for a significantportionofthatday.Duringthistime you could laugh or talk with friends or family, experience nature or do something active. The aim is to give the brain a chance to slow down and rest by doing something that does not involve electronic devices.

We live in a connected world and we can’t turn the clock back and take away all these fun new technological tools. So the message is, we need to learn to take care of our brains to avoid a potential iDisorder. Visit the Dealing with Distractions unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au to learn more about managing your distractions.

HSC TrialsThe HSC Trial Exams begin for all Year 12 students on Monday 30 July. I hope all students have had a good break from the day-to-day classroom and had time to focus on their study schedules and preparation. Mrs Kath Knowles, Senior Studies Coordinator and Mr Richard Chen, Year 12 Master focus a lot of time of helping and preparing the Year 12 students to perform at their best in these exams, so now it is over to the boys. At the conclusion of the Trials when all reports and results are gathered the schoolwillconductit’sfinalroundofacademicmentor interviews with all Year 12 to discuss what is needed between now and the HSC in Term 4. My best wishes to all Year 12 in the upcoming Trial HSC exams. It is one way for all students to sit down with their mentor and have a one on one conversation about their learning and their progress as they draw towards the completion of senior schooling.

Subject Selection Nights •Year920136:00pm•Year1120137.30pmTuesday 31 July Week 3 is an important information night for all current Year 8 students and Year 10 students as they begin their subject selection for 2013. It is the expectation that all students will be in attendance with their parents. Anyone unable to attend on that night would need to let the respective Year Master know in advance as a courtesy. More information to come.

The two schools have a long tradition of playing matches going back to 1930 and it was good to renew acquaintances.GregoryTerracearepreparingforthestartoftheir season and this was the third match of their southern tour having comfortably accounted for KnoxGrammarandSt.Edmunds,Canberrainbothage groups. Representative duty and injuries saw a depleted Waverley 1st XV side compete till the end only to go down in the last play of the game 29-26. Stand-in Captain Haynes Wileman led by example, ablyassistedbyGabeFarley,MattHooper(2tries)and Matt Koutsoukis.15A’s only had half a team turn up to training through the week before the game but had a full complement for the match and were defeated by anaccomplishedGregoryTerraceside.Waverleytried hard and were still tackling at the end and the extrapracticewillbenefittheirattempttocontinuetheir undefeated CAS season.Again the parents of our boys and the Supporters Club combined to stage an excellent post-match function which was received thankfully and wholeheartedly by the travelling Terrace players, coaches and supporters, capping off a wonderful tour for them.

The Rugby Report: A busy holiday for the ‘Waves’Oakhill Trial MatchThe middle week of the break had the 1sts and 2nds doing weights and training at Queens Park in preparation for the trial match against Oakhill on Tuesday July 10. Oakhill are a big side and particularly strong this year having beaten both Barker and Knox in previous trials. Like the GregoryTerracematch,Waverleywasdepletedand started with only 5 of the usual 1st XV team. However, any player who pulls on the Double V will work his hardest and, although the Waves lost the match, the coaches were pleased with the effortshown.GabeFarleywasstrongagain(thistime as Captain and stand-off), Jack Worthington tackled his heart out and Josh Brenton stood out in the pack.

Loss to Shore16A’s played a trial match against Shore last Saturday. Although a few players were missing from the usual run-on side, the Waves competed wellandcoachScottColemanwassatisfiedwiththe effort despite the loss. The boys should be confidentheadingintothefinalfourCASmatches.

Rugby Presentation Night DelayedJust a word about the Rugby Presentation night originally scheduled for August 18: This clashes with the Bledisloe Cup match at Homebush so we have put the night back to September 1. Further announcements will be made in upcoming weeks about Presentation Night which is always a memorable night.Goodlucktoallteamsinthisweek’sgamesagainst neighbours, Cranbrook.
