Liturgy Of The Hours: (Part 2 of a 7 part series)

The first of the five Hours of the Divine Office are:

Office of Readings "The office of readings seeks to provide God's people, and in particular those consecrated to God in a special way, with a wider selection of passages from sacred Scripture for medita-tion, together with the finest excerpts from spiritual writers. Even though the cycle of scriptural readings at daily Mass is now richer, the treasures of revelation and tradition to be found in the office of readings will also contribute greatly to the spir-itual life" (General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours [GILH], no. 55).

Page 5: A Catholic Community Proclaiming the Greatness of God in ......THE PARISH OF SAINT MARY A Catholic Community Proclaiming the Greatness of God in our Time One Phalanx Road Colts Neck,

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Yes, the command is simple: “love one anoth-er.” The demand is imposing: lay down our lives. Keeping God’s commandments is laying down our lives—we surrender our will to doing God’s will and in this is the dying. Caring for and reaching out to others is laying down our lives—also a dying. Doing the little things everyday not because we have to but because we see the other as the beloved of God is dying. We choose all these and other ways to dying because we know this is love and love is risen Life rising to kiss us with a share in divinity.

Let us welcome family members, friends and guests of our First Holy Communion Children. It is a great day for the Church as we welcome members to the Eucharistic Table as they continue their journey toward Full Membership when the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred. It is the responsibility of the entire parish to assist, encourage and evangelize. May we remain open to God’s outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our midst in order to accomplish the work entrusted to us. As we grow in our faith, may God’s grace continue to enable us to be welcoming and steadfast witnesses to our faith in our daily living.

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord is celebrated this week. This observance marks the 40th Day of the Easter Season. It is a holy day of obligation. We have prepared a Mass schedule for your convenience. Please make your plans accordingly. Next week-

end, we will welcome more families as they present their children for their First Holy Communion. Anticipate your arrival time for the 10am & 12 noon Masses. Many thanks to those who helped to prepare the grotto for the May Crowning celebration. Mary, Seat of Wisdom, Pray for Us!

Our parish has been and continues to be blessed by many faithful volunteers who heed the call of Stewardship to share of their Time, Talent & Treasure for the building up of the Church and the Evangelization of others. There are many ways in which to serve. Please contact me or a member of the parish staff if you are interested in learning more. A special request goes to those who have recently retired from their careers. Retirement is truly a time to give back. It is a time to do something that can truly make a difference in the life of the community. The Project Care 2015 menu of opportunities has been published. Check it out to learn more about the happenings here in our parish; to grow as a faith-filled person; and, to help others grow as well.

The Easter Collection Report should be published in the coming weeks. Thank you for your generous support, sharing and prayer. Last week, 8 May to be exact, I completed two years of service to Saint Mary Parish as Pastor…Year 3 has begun! May God continue to open our hearts and minds in prayer and service as we build upon the firm foundation that has been prepared for us. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Marriage in the Church – A History Presented by Michele McCue, PA of Faith Formation Wednesday: June 17; 7:30-9:00pm Meet in the Chapel. It seems appropriate, with the World Meeting of Families coming to Philadelphia this fall, to outline the history of the sacrament of marriage within the Roman Catholic Church. This session will examine how the Church has viewed mar-riage throughout the ages culminating with current Church teachings on marriage in the light of the Second Vatican Council. Notwithstanding some of the more controversial issues surrounding contemporary marriage, the sacrament remains a source of tremendous grace for those who are committed to the covenantal nature of the sacrament.

Tai Chi for Health

What is Tai Chi? Tai Chi is a slow moving meditative exercise that began in ancient China around 500 years ago. It combines stress reduction and good posture with movement to improve health.

What is Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention? The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention program was developed for people with arthritis and elderly people with balance problems by Dr. Paul Lam, a family practice doctor and Tai Chi Master in Sydney, Australia, together with a team of rheumatologists and physical ther-apists. The Sun Style is the newest style and was chosen by a panel of medical experts for the Tai Chi for Arthritis Foundation. It is characterized by agile steps, higher stance, and incorporates Qigong, the cultivation of Qi (energy life force). Cultivating Qi is essential to health and vitality and regular practice can help to relieve pain and stiffness. Join us for Tai Chi at the parish with Barbara Schaflin, a certified Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention instructor and member of the Tai Chi for Health Institute.
