Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate the safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools to construct a variety of related projects.

• Demonstrate skills related to trade related Mathematics, measurements and conversions.

•

Demonstrate safe work habits and complete tool safety tests.

•

Calculate board foot, square foot and linear measurements. Draw andinterpret construction drawings.

•

Complete a simple building layout using a transit. Estimate buildingcosts.

•

Demonstrate the ability to layout and assemble a floor system includingthe foundation.

Demonstrate the ability to design an industry standard cabinet planand apply basic wood finishes.

Demonstrate the ability to layout a common rafter, a cut stringer stairway, construct a gable roof, and install a ceiling grid and ceiling tiles.

Demonstrate a knowledge of building and safety code requirements.

The Building Construction Program is a four year program that begins with Grade 9 instruction. Students will develop the basic skills required for employment or post-secondary education in the building construction trade.

Complete a certified WHMIS course, CPR and First Aid training.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

Building Construction Program

Students in the Building Construction Program will be instructed in the use of a wide variety of techniques associated with the major areas of the building construction industry, in Carpentry, Woodworking, Concrete and Drywall.Ongoing safety practices in the proper use and safe operation of tools and equipment used in the industry is emphasized.

Course Outline

Students will study the following areas:

• Introduction to Industry Technology and the Building Construction trade

• Trade related Mathematics: Measurement and Conversions

• Introduction to Stationary Power Tools• Safe Operation of Tools and Tool Safety Test• Introduction to Drafting and Surveying• Framing and Concrete Forms• Cabinet Assembly Techniques• Basic Wood Finishing Techniques• Boarding and Drywall Taping• Interior/Exterior Finishes• Roof Framing• Stairs and Ramp Construction Methods

Graduates of the Building Construction Program are well prepared to continue their studies at a post-secondary technical college, to enter an apprenticeship program, or to compete for jobs in the construction trade.
