How steel is recycled

Steel is EASY to recycle from household waste!

It’s MAGNETIC

Machines bale the steel in our domestic waste

Household appliances are much harder to recycle

Like cars, they take time and skill to break apart, which is costly.

Once the steel has been sorted and baled it is…

put into the furnace where molten iron is added

It gets heated to 1700 degrees C

The liquid metal is poured into a mould to form big slabs which are then rolled

into coils

It’s then made into new cans…

bicycle parts…

railway tracks…

ships’ hulls…

cars…

bridges…

rollercoasters…

and many other things,both big and small.

What about the environmental impact?

Steel is made from one of earth’s most common resources – iron ore

as well as limestone

and coal.

Mining these has massive environmental impact,

the manufacture requires a huge amount of energy,

and creates a lot of waste.

The good news is that…

STEEL ISINFINITELY

RECYCLABLE

So by recycling we can…

Conserve non-renewable fossil fuels

Reduce the consumption of energy

Reduce waste

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

But we can do much better!

In the UK up to 25% of a can is made up of recycled steel

but steel manufactured in Europe contains 54%

recycled steel.
