McIntyre thinks the musician shortage may be caused in part by a change in peoples conception of serving and ministering

ldquoThere are some large schools closing down their organ departments because they just dont have students applying to learnanymorerdquo he said ldquoAnd if the schools arent turning out the musicians then the churches are having more difficulty findingthem And thats what were findingrdquo

Here are three dilemmas

1) The piano teacher has one or more students who are eager to learn to play piano and to play in churcas soon as they are able but they only have cheap keyboards on which to practice their music The parents cannot afford the cost of the lessons and the cost of a piano What can the teacher do

2) Your church needs a pianist to play for worship and despite conscientiously searching asking andpraying hasnt yet found anyone What can the church do

3) Your church has had one or more old pianos donated to it Usually the donations are by generousmembers of your congregation who no longer have room for the instrument but that church classroomwhere it sits now needs to be used for hand bell practice Boy Scouts or preschool The piano is over-

crowding the room and not being used What can the church do

ANSWER Three lemons can make great lemonade Beth McCoy a diaconal minister of music servingas a Music Ministry Consultant in Holston Conference and also an Abingdon piano teacher had just sucthe first problem A small church near Abingdon had the second problem And a music director of achurch in Abingdon had the third one Beth asked the music minister if there was any way the piano thwas overcrowding the hand bell rehearsal room could be loaned rent-free to one of her students Hechecked with his worship committee and they agreed The parents of the students gently transported thpiano to their home and placed it on an inside wall of their house to help it stay in tune The church onlyasked that the parents have it tuned once the house was closed for the winter and Beth gave them a tuers name and number Cost of a tuning is about $70 The church also asked that the piano pupil play

worship whenever she was ready It will be a year or so but she is willing and the little girl and her mother wrote a lovely thank-you note to the church

This is a win-win-win If your church has a piano that you would loan to a student for practicing Bethwould suggest that you let a few piano teachers in your area know of its availability and of your churchsrequirements eg who will move it when it will be returned that it will be tuned that the student will tithback to the church hisher musical offering in worship You might also post a notice at music stores inyour area You could pass this idea on to other denominations in your area or not - just let it start as aMethodist music solution

So if you have unused pianos filling classrooms see if there are students who need them loan them ou

and ask the students to return regularly to play in worship The future of the pianists of our churches is your hands

An added note The small church near Abingdon with the second problem has chosen to pay for the students lessons because the church want him to play in worship and the pianist who has played there for 43 years is thinking about retiring soon

Over Christmas I went to visit one of our homebounmembers I took some literature I noticed his houskeeper had to keep scooting us toward the livingroom He seemed reluctant to entertain me Finallygot to the bottom of it I said ldquoToday I wanted to

share some good news I have officially lost 185pounds since my surgerymdashI guess thatrsquos 75 moresince I was here this summerrdquo ldquoWhewrdquo he sighed ldquoYou are the same preacher wehad before I didnrsquot recognize you and wondered if Imade a mistake letting you in my houserdquo

Willie wasnrsquot the only onemdashConference friends whomI see infrequently tell me the same thing ldquoYou look different I didnrsquot recognize yoursquorsquo The important thinfriends is that I feel so different In times past I wouget my work done and I was done I had no energyfor my family or other activities In some areas there is a lot of prejudice and misun-derstanding about surgeries like the one I had doneIf you think that having your stomach and intestinescut open and re-routed is ldquotaking the easy wayrdquo letrsquostalk selling bridges in Iraq

On November 29 2010 I underwent distal gastric bypass surgery It was neither easy nor cheap but I blieve it saved my life Pre-op the nurse told me thatmy heart could not pump all the water off my feet anankles I had about 60 pounds a piece on each legthat was pulling me down

Many of us diet in our 20rsquos (some even earlier) andcan pull off the weight we want and need Years goby stress accumulates childbirth for women breadand pasta and fast food for allmdashpoof A drastic solution is needed I believe this column is a place toshare things from my heart that can help others on th

journey I promised the Lord if folks asked (politely)about how Irsquod done it that I would always offer to tellthem my story and give them help If you are interesed in any of surgical possibilities but need to be poined in the right direction I would be glad to talk withyou and share my experience Perhaps you just wa

to talk to someone who has been through it firstmdashno judgment no pressure

DISTRICT NEWS
